Geoscientists are concerned with three dimensional spatial observations, measurements, and explanations of a great variety of phenomena. The representation of three-dimensional data has always been a problem. Prior to computers, graphical displays involved specialized maps, cross-sections, fence diagrams, and geometrical constructions such as stereonets. All were designed to portray three-dimensional relationships on two-dimensional paper products, and all were time consuming to develop. Until recently, computers were of little assistance to three-dimensional data handling and representation problems. Memory was too expensive to handle the huge amounts of data required by three-dimensional assessments; computational speeds were too slow to perform the necessary calculations within a reasonable time; and graphical displays had too Iowa resolution or were much too expensive to produce useful visualizations. Much experience was gained with two-dimensional geographic information systems (GIS), which were applied to many land-use management and resource assessment problems. The two-dimensional GIS field matured rapidly in the late 1980's and became widely accepted. The advent of the modern computer workstation, with its enhanced memory and graphical capabilities at ever more affordable prices, has largely overcome these earlier constraints.

Book excerpt: The subsurface geological model or 3-D GIS is constructed from three kinds of objects, which are a lithotope (in boundary representation), a number of fault systems, and volumetric textures (vector fields). The chief task of the model is to yield an estimate of the conductance tensors (fluid permeability and thermal conductivity) throughout an array of voxels. This is input as material properties to a FEHM numerical physical process model. The main task of the FEHM process model is to distinguish regions of convective from regions of conductive heat flow, and to estimate the fluid phase, pressure and flow paths. The temperature, geochemical, and seismic data provide the physical constraints on the process. The conductance tensors in the Franciscan Complex are to be derived by the addition of two components. The isotropic component is a stochastic spatial variable due to disruption of lithologies in melange. The deviatoric component is deterministic, due to smoothness and continuity in the textural vector fields. This decomposition probably also applies to the engineering hydrogeological properties of shallow terrestrial fluvial systems. However there are differences in quantity. The isotropic component is much more variable in the Franciscan, to the point where volumetric averages are misleading, and it may be necessary to select that component from several, discrete possible states. The deviatoric component is interpolated using a textural vector field. The Franciscan field is much more complicated, and contains internal singularities. 27 refs., 10 figs.

When the International Heat Flow Committee (as it was first called), IHFC, was formed in 1963 at the San Francisco International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics with Francis Birch as its first Chairman, the principal purpose was to stimulate work in the basic aspects of geothermics, particularly the measurement of terrestrial heat-flow density (HFD) in what were then the 'geothermally underdeveloped' areas of the world. In this, the IHFC was remarkably successful. By the beginning of the second decade of our existence, interest in the economic aspects of geothermics was increasing at a rapid pace and the IHFC served as a conduit for all aspects of geothermics and, moreover, became the group responsi ble for collecting data on all types of HFD measurements. In all the tasks that are undertaken, the IHFC relies on the enthusiasm of its members and colleagues who devote much of their time to the important but unglamorous and personally unrewarding tasks that were asked of them, and we arc fortunate that our parent institutions are usually quite tolerant of the time spent by their employees on IHFC work.

Book excerpt: 3D modelling aims to solve geological problems, but these are always underdetermined and requireprediction to produce geologically reasonable results. There are a series of related issues associated with 3D modelling techniques that require analysis, including geophysical ambiguity, sparse data and the subjective nature of geological interpretation. The combination of these modelling issues results in geological models being subject to uncertainty. In this thesis, we have developed 'stratigraphic variability' to detect and quantify geological uncertainty within 3D models.Stratigraphic variability determines the likelihood of finding different geological units at any given location within a model. A model suite is produced during uncertainty analysis, which contains a collection of models calculated from a single input data set. The effect of geological uncertainty on 3D model architecture is analysed with a set of 'geodiversity' metrics, a collection of analytical techniques that characterise each model within the model suite geometrically and geophysically. Geometrical metrics include: depth and volume of a geological unit; curvature and surface area of a contact; and geological complexity. Geophysical metrics analyse the observed geophysical response (representing nature), the calculated geophysical response (representing the model) and the residual (the difference between the observed and calculated responses).Geophysical metrics include: the root-mean-square misfit of the residual; standard deviation of the calculated response; information entropy of the residual; the 2D correlation coefficient of the calculated and observed response and; the Hausdorff distance between the calculated and observed response. Model space is mapped by identifying models that exhibit common and diverse characteristics, with the most diverse models defining the boundaries of model space and most common models defining the centre. The combination of uncertainty detection and model space exploration reveals the range of geological possibility. This thesis demonstrates a set of techniques that better describe the geological problem and provide guidance to geophysical inversion procedures. We demonstrate stratigraphic variability, geodiversity and inversion techniques on two case studies: the Gippsland Basin, a mature oil and gas prospective region off the coast of southeastern Australia; and the gold prospective Proterozoic Ashanti Greenstone Belt located in southwestern Ghana. Significant results are that: (1) model architecture can vary significantly due to uncertainty; (2) considered addition of data significantly reduces model uncertainty; (3) characterisation of models using geodiversity reveals geologically relevant characteristics of a model; (4) not constructing multiple 3D models from a dataset misrepresents the geological terrane; (5) model uncertainty is complex and affects the architecture of each model differently; (6) geophysical inversion can be assisted using results from both stratigraphic variability and geodiversity and (7) all these techniques can be applied to 3D models that represent different geological terranes.

Book excerpt: Sedimentary basin geothermal resources are attractive sustainable heat sources because of the potential to displace fossil fuels, particularly in cold climate regions. A geothermal resource reconnaissance is presented for the Appalachian Basin surface heat flow, which is calculated at individual wells using temperature-depth data and generalized stratigraphy in a one-dimensional, steady-state, N-layer heat conduction model with two layers of radiogenic heat generation. Basin scale ordinary kriging, a common geostatistical method for geologic field assessment, is juxtaposed to spatially stratified ordinary kriging. The latter employs Poisson wavelet potential field edges to define prospective heat flow sub-provinces. The average structure of the surface heat flow spatial autocorrelation (the semi-variogram) within most sub-provinces is significantly different than the basin scale average structure. Thus, in the Appalachian Basin, for an accurate site-specific assessment of the mean surface heat flow and spatial prediction uncertainty, one should examine spatial autocorrelation at the scale of geologic subregions.
