Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What was the interrelationship between education and society during the twentieth century in the United States and India? What is the essence of the historical development of educational policies and social systems in these two countries? What philosophical views and developmental courses underlie their outdoor-oriented education? What are their aims of outdoor-oriented education? What procedures are connected with their outdoor-oriented education? These questions are examined in this unique volume. This book is divided into three parts. The first part creates a context for the comparison of the issues concerning education and society. The central point of departure used here regards education as being closely related to the totality of culture and human activity. The dialectic process between education and society is realized differently in accordance with the value objectives that provide the background for different societies. This comparative educational study uses a historico-hermeneutical approach. The second part analyzes the social systems and educational policies of the United States and India following their developmental trends and patterns. The nature of the relationship between education and society for each country is further brought into focus when it is interpreted from the perspective of the philosophical views, pedagogical aims, and procedures of twentieth-century outdoor-oriented education. The case studies provide an interesting insight into how changes in educational policy have been reflected in the every-day pedagogical procedures used in schools in the United States and India. The third part is an analysis and comparison of the phenomena previously presented that are related to education and society through the lenses suggested by sociological theories. It compares the dimensions of the interrelationship between education and society from the standpoint of outdoor-oriented education in the two countries during the twentieth century. This thought-provoking volume is intended for anybody interested in the interplay between education and society in all its complexity. It offers a fascinating journey into the past and present of the issues that have defined the development of education and society in the United States and India."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Education Council Act of 1991 established the National Education Commission on Time and Learning as an independent advisory body and called for a comprehensive review of the relationship between time and learning in U.S. schools. This document serves as a supplementary volume to the commission's first report released in May 1994, which found that most school-reform designs are structurally flawed by their adherence to a traditional school calendar. This volume describes innovative approaches to the use of school time. It provides nearly 40 examples of exemplary efforts to make better use of available time and extend the amount of time students spend learning. The brief program descriptions are from 15 elementary schools, 15 middle and senior high schools, 4 districtwide efforts, and 6 special programs. They include public and private schools in rural, urban, and suburban areas from 26 states. Information for reaching contact persons is provided. A review of the programs indicates that many different kinds of schools and districts have already implemented many of the commission's recommendations. The most common approaches in descending order include: (1) redesigning available time; (2) employing technology; (3) extending the school day or year; (4) providing time for professional development; and (5) providing support services for children or families. Finally, the approaches to the redesign of time usage differ by school level. (LMI)

Reflections lets their voices speak of the achievements, specific initiatives, and challenges when working for UNESCOs vision in New Zealand and globally. Part 1 describes the beginnings, growth, and work of UNESCO and of the New Zealand National Commission for UNESCO and provides a background for the voices that are the focus of this book, as well describing the Commissions many achievements. This book was released on 2000-04-18 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yearbook of the Politics of Education Association A competent, caring, and qualified teacher for every student in the United States! This audacious goal is taken right from the opening pages of the report of the National Commission on Teaching and America's Future (NCTAF)-What Matters Most: Teaching for America's Future. The NCTAF findings are so powerful and unique that The Politics of Teacher Association (PTA) uses them as the basis for this 2000 Y=yearbook. Editors Gallagher and Bailey, along with leading educators, explore the controversies and ramifications of the Commission's major recommendations: Get serious about standards-for both students and teachers Reinvent teacher preparation and professional development Overhaul teacher recruitment and put qualified teachers in every classroom Encourage and reward teaching knowledge and skill Create schools that are organized for student and teacher success The contributors to this book speak to the underlying assumptions, research bases, and values found in the recommendations. Long-time and persistent issues about teaching, teacher education programs, and public policy making are examined under the new light of the latest research. Real-life successes of the recommendations in action are shown in two state-level stories and an urban school partnership. This PEA 2000 yearbook will prove a valuable resource for students, researchers, and all educators interested in teacher education reform in the 21st century.
