Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Half a century ago, S. Chandrasekhar wrote these words in the preface to his l celebrated and successful book: In this monograph an attempt has been made to present the theory of stellar dy namics as a branch of classical dynamics - a discipline in the same general category as celestial mechanics. [ ... J Indeed, several of the problems of modern stellar dy namical theory are so severely classical that it is difficult to believe that they are not already discussed, for example, in Jacobi's Vorlesungen. Since then, stellar dynamics has developed in several directions and at var ious levels, basically three viewpoints remaining from which to look at the problems encountered in the interpretation of the phenomenology. Roughly speaking, we can say that a stellar system (cluster, galaxy, etc.) can be con sidered from the point of view of celestial mechanics (the N-body problem with N » 1), fluid mechanics (the system is represented by a material con tinuum), or statistical mechanics (one defines a distribution function for the positions and the states of motion of the components of the system).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graduate students and researchers in astrophysics and cosmology need a solid understanding of a wide range of physical processes. This clear and authoritative book has been designed to help them to develop the necessary toolkit of theory. The book is modular in design, allowing the reader to pick and choose a selection of chapters, if necessary. It can be used alone, or in conjunction with the accompanying two volumes (covering stars and stellar systems, and galaxies and cosmology, respectively). After reviewing the basics of dynamics, electromagnetic theory, and statistical physics, the book carefully develops a solid understanding of radiative processes, spectra, fluid mechanics, plasma physics and MHD, dynamics of gravitating systems, general relativity, nuclear physics, and other key concepts. Throughout, the reader's understanding is developed and tested with problems and helpful hints. This welcome volume provides graduate students with an indispensable introduction to and reference on all the physical processes they will need to successfully tackle research in astrophysics and cosmology.

This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since the first observations of sunspots in the early seventeenth century, stellar rotation has been a major topic in astronomy and astrophysics. Jean-Louis Tassoul synthesizes a large number of theoretical investigations on rotating stars. Drawing upon his own research, Professor Tassoul also carefully critiques various competing ideas. In the first three chapters, the author provides a short historical sketch of stellar rotation, the main observational data on the Sun and other stars on which the subsequent theory is based, and the basic Newtonian hydrodynamics used to study rotating stars. Following a discussion of some general mechanical properties of stars in a state of permanent rotation, he reviews the main techniques for determining the structure of a rotating star and its stability with respect to infinitesimal disturbances. Since the actual distribution of angular momentum within stars is still unknown, Professor Tassoul considers various models of angular momentum as well as of meridional circulation. He devotes the rest of his study to the problems concerning various groups of stars and stages in stellar evolution. Originally published in 1979. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Spherical and Practical Astronomy, Vol. 1: Embracing the General Problems of Spherical Astronomy, the Special, Applications to Nautical Astronomy, and the Theory, and Use of Fixed and Portable Appendix Instruments, With an Appendix on the Method of Least Squares The Gaussian method of reducing circummeridian alti tudes of the sun by referring them to the instant of the sun's maximum altitude, is in this work rigorously investi gated, and a small term, overlooked or disregarded by gauss, has been added to the formula. A new and brief approximative method of finding the latitude by two altitudes near the meridian when the time is not known, is given in Vol. 1. Arts. 195 and 204, and another by three altitudes near the meridian, in Art. 205, which will probably be found useful as nautical methods. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Spherical and Practical Astronomy, Vol. 1: Embracing the General Problems of Spherical Astronomy, the Special, Applications to Nautical Astronomy, and the Theory, and Use of Fixed and Portable Appendix Instruments, With an Appendix on the Method of Least Squares The methods of investigation adopted in this work are in accordance with what may be called the modern school of practical astronomy, or more distinctively the German school, at the head of which stands the unrivalled Bessel. In this school, the investigations both of the general problems of Spherical Astronomy and of the Theory of Astronomical Instruments arc distinguished by the generality of their form and their mathematical rigor. When approximative methods are employed for convenience in practice, their degree of accuracy is carefully determined by means of exact formulæ previously investigated; the latter being developed in converging series, and only such terms of these series being neglected as can be shown to be insensible in the cases to which the formulæ are to be applied. And it is an essential condition of all the methods of computation from data furnished by observation, that the errors of the computation shall always be practically insensible in relation to the errors of observation: so that our results shall be purely the legitimate deductions from the observations, and free from all avoidable error.
