This book was released on 2019-01-02 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Writer’s Gift or the Patron’s Pleasure? introduces a new approach to literary patronage through a reassessment of the medieval paragon of literary sponsorship, Charles V of France. Traditionally celebrated for his book commissions that promoted the vernacular, Charles V also deserves credit for having profoundly altered the literary economy when bypassing the traditional system of acquiring books through gifting to favor the commission. When upturning literary dynamics by soliciting works to satisfy his stated desires, the king triggered a multi-generational literary debate concerned with the effect a work’s status as a solicited or unsolicited text had in determining the value and purpose of the literary enterprise. Treating first the king's commissioned writers and then canonical French late medieval authors, Deborah McGrady argues that continued discussion of these competing literary economies engendered the concept of the “writer’s gift,” which vernacular writers used to claim a distinctive role in society based on their triple gift of knowledge, wisdom, and literary talent.

Book Synopsis Sacred Gifts, Profane, Pleasures by : Marcy Norton
Download or read book Sacred Gifts, Profane, Pleasures written by Marcy Norton and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the Spanish Empire, Marcy Norton investigates how tobacco and chocolate became material and symbolic links to the pre-Hispanic past for colonized Indians and colonizing Europeans alike. Botanical ambassadors of the American continent, they also profoundly affected Europe. Tobacco, once condemned as proof of Indian diabolism, became the constant companion of clergymen and the single largest source of state revenue in Spain. Before coffee or tea became popular in Europe, chocolate was the drink that energized the fatigued and uplifted the depressed. However, no one could quite forget the pagan past of tobacco and chocolate, despite their apparent Europeanization: physicians relied on Mesoamerican medical systems for their understanding of tobacco; theologians looked to Aztec precedent to decide whether chocolate drinking violated Lenten fasts.

Book Synopsis Literary Patronage in Greece and Rome by : Barbara K. Gold
Download or read book Literary Patronage in Greece and Rome written by Barbara K. Gold and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on literary evidence, Gold explores patronage in Greece and Rome through the words of the authors, revealing the forces that patronage exerted on genius and talent. The author argues that, although the patron was in important influence in the development of the literature written for and about him, the literary product emerged as a force in itself, independent of the influence of the patron. Gold sees the relationship between patron and literature as an integrator of the public and private realms. Originally published in 1987.
