Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Wonder Book In performing this pleasant task, for it has been really a task fit for hot weather, and one of the most agreeable, of a literary kind, which he ever undertook, the author has not always thought it necessary to write downward, in order to meet the comprehension of children. He has generally suffered the theme to soar, whenever such was its tendency, and when he himself was buoyant enough to follow without an effort. Chil dren possess an unestimated sensibility to what ever is deep or high, in imagination or feeling, so long as it is simple likewise. It is only the arti ficial and the complex that bewilder them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wonder Book of Light Light, though one of the most difficult of all the natural forces to explain thoroughly, contains Within it so many wonders that it can be made attractive to young and old alike. The author has not hesitated, in either this or the other Wonder Books, to employ freely a few of the old, old fairy stories for illustrating some especially difficult point. It is his experience in the teaching of the natural sciences to the young, that the more unusual or out-of-the-way the illustrations employed, the greater the chance of their producing a marked effect on the mind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of Wonder Bothwell Castle is beautifully situated upon the Clyde, and fronts the ruins of Blantyre Priory. The estate of Bothwell has long been, and continues to be, in the possession of the Douglas family. Loud roars the north round Bothwell's hall, And fast descends the pattering rain: But streams of tears still faster fall From thy blue eyes, oh! bonny Jane! Hark! hark! - I hear, with mournful yell, The wraiths of angry Clyde complain; But sorrow bursts with louder swell From thy fair breast, oh! bonny Jane! "Tap! - tap!" - who knocks? - the door unfolds; The mourner lifts her melting eye, And soon with joy and hope beholds A reverend monk approaching nigh: About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Pen, Pencil, and Poison’ is one of Wilde’s most intriguing essays. Part biography, part social commentary, and part philosophical debate, he writes the biography of an art critic, who was also convicted of murder. However, in true Wildean style, there’s more to the essay than meets the eye. While documenting the life and crimes of Thomas Griffiths Wainwright, Wilde explores the ideas of dual identity, sin in the formation of the personality, and the relationship between crime and culture. ‘Pen, Pencil, and Poison’ is a fascinating insight into some of the conventions of the time. Oscar Wilde (1854 – 1900) was an Irish novelist, poet, playwright, and wit. He was an advocate of the Aesthetic movement, which extolled the virtues of art for the sake of art. During his career, Wilde wrote nine plays, including ‘The Importance of Being Earnest,’ ‘Lady Windermere’s Fan,’ and ‘A Woman of No Importance,’ many of which are still performed today. His only novel, ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ was adapted for the silver screen, in the film, ‘Dorian Gray,’ starring Ben Barnes and Colin Firth. In addition, Wilde wrote 43 poems, and seven essays. His life was the subject of a film, starring Stephen Fry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Wonder Book of Old Romance The criticism was perfectly true, from a literary point of view. The older romances were for the most part of small poetic merit, while their construe tion was often ill-balanced and digressive. There is hardly one of the features dwelt upon by Chaucer which cannot be paralleled in them. Sir Topaz was a knight fair and gent; so were Sir Guy, Sir Bevis, and the rest of them. He came to a wood where was many a wild beast, both buck and hare: those ferocious creatures pastured there, apparently, because the poet had to fill up a line somehow, much as the author of Sir Bevis, anticipating King Lear, was forced to help out his metre with rats and mice and such small deer. Sir Topaz wore a breech and eke a shirt; his face was as white as the finest bread; he had a seemly nose: in like manner every detail of clothing, figure, and armour, relevant or irrelevant, is dwelt on in the old romances. He pricked over stile and stone, in his quest for the elf-queen, with ease, rapidity, and an absence of adventure; so too Amys journeys many days to seek Amylion, without, so far as the poet tells us, any accident or any ordinary occurrence of daily life except a feeling of great fatigue.
