Even so, he can't shake the nagging feeling that something is missing from the comfortable yet inconsequential life of predicting the future for Gemini City's elite.Preoccupied with his responsibilities, Aargh is unaware that Ardilakk Valley is on the verge of changes that will irrevocably alter the practice of magic forever and possibly destroy it. With one reckless and rather unwizardly act of kindness, Aargh finds himself thrust into the center of a conflict as old as time itself. To save the world he loves, the greatest wizard of the age will have to become a fugitive, a warrior, a pirate, a hero, and most importantly, a father.BOOK I (PARTS I & II)

Through it all is her struggle with her ethnicity and her ultimate acceptance of herself by founding Hula Mai, a Hawaiian dance company. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To See the Wizard: Politics and the Literature of Childhood takes its central premise, as the title indicates, from L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Upon their return to The Emerald City after killing the Wicked Witch of the West, the task the Wizard assigned them, Dorothy, the Tin Woodman, Scarecrow, and Lion learn that the wizard is a “humbug,” merely a man from Nebraska manipulating them and the citizens of both the Emerald City and of Oz from behind a screen. Yet they all continue to believe in the powers they know he does not have, still insisting he grant their wishes. The image of the man behind the screen—and the reader’s continued pursuit of the Wizard—is a powerful one that has at its core an issue central to the study of children’s literature: the relationship between the adult writer and the child reader. As Jack Zipes, Perry Nodelman, Daniel Hade, Jacqueline Rose, and many others point out, before the literature for children and young adults actually reaches these intended readers, it has been mediated by many and diverse cultural, social, political, psychological, and economic forces. These forces occasionally work purposefully in an attempt to consciously socialize or empower, training the reader into a particular identity or way of viewing the world, by one who considers him or herself an advocate for children. Obviously, these “wizards” acting in literature can be the writers themselves, but they can also be the publishers, corporations, school boards, teachers, librarians, literary critics, and parents, and these advocates can be conservative, progressive, or any gradation in between. It is the purpose of this volume to interrogate the politics and the political powers at work in literature for children and young adults. Childhood is an important site of political debate, and children often the victims or beneficiaries of adult uses of power; one would be hard-pressed to find a category of literature more contested than that written for children and adolescents. Peter Hunt writes in his introduction to Understanding Children’s Literature, that children’s books “are overtly important educationally and commercially—with consequences across the culture, from language to politics: most adults, and almost certainly the vast majority in positions of power and influence, read children’s books as children, and it is inconceivable that the ideologies permeating those books had no influence on their development.” If there were a question about the central position literature for children and young adults has in political contests, one needs to look no further than the myriad struggles surrounding censorship. Mark I. West observes, for instance, “Throughout the history of children’s literature, the people who have tried to censor children’s books, for all their ideological differences, share a rather romantic view about the power of books. They believe, or at least they profess to believe, that books are such a major influence in the formation of children’s values and attitudes that adults need to monitor every word that children read.” Because childhood and young-adulthood are the sites of political debate for issues ranging from civil rights and racism to the construction and definition of the family, indoctrinating children into or subverting national and religious ideologies, the literature of childhood bears consciously political analysis, asking how socialization works, how children and young adults learn of social, cultural and political expectations, as well as how literature can propose means of fighting those structures. To See the Wizard: Politics and the Literature of Childhood intends to offer analysis of the political content and context of literature written for and about children and young adults. The essays included in To See the Wizard analyze nineteenth and twentieth century literature from America, Britain, Australia, the Caribbean, and Sri Lanka that is for and about children and adolescents. The essays address issues of racial and national identity and representation, poverty and class mobility, gender, sexuality and power, and the uses of literature in the healing of trauma and the construction of an authentic self.

Book excerpt: In the years following World War II Americans in every city in the United States enjoyed bowling. Men and women bowled in separate leagues or together. In bowling's early days, pin boys risked the dangers of flying wood to set pins from afternoons through early mornings, often in seedy surroundings. When pinspotters replaced the pin boys, national advertising campaigns changed the sport's image. Huge bowling lanes welcomed people of all social levels. Bowling boomed. Hidden Agendas is set in the 1980's, a time when bowling's popularity was universal. The story focuses on a young New York man hired to participate in an Arizona bowling match with a $20 million dollar jackpot. Edward Vincent Karol has worked his way to the top of two professions. Smart enough to realize the people bankrolling his opponent might want him removed, he vanishes from his usual haunts. Yet, two dominant needs remain. One is regular practice, and the other, a way to get to Arizona unharmed. His challenges are complicated by his mother's incessant demand for a grandchild, and a meeting with a young woman whose physical and mental health verge on total disaster. He'd like to help her. Doing so would mean added tension throughout the most difficult month of his career.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Book 2 of The Wizard Without a Wand, Jenie Maloy tells us her version of what happened during her first year at Wizard School. While it’s the same story as Shmedley Thrumbledack’s story in Book 1 of this series, we learn different things. For one thing, it’s told from a different person’s perspective. For another, Jenie remembers more things than Schmedley. Jenie Maloy is one of the Tensome – a group of ten kind students who somehow end up together in their dorm – Hotel Westly. Jenie doesn’t want her parent to find about her friends, because every time they do, she quickly loses those friends. Jenie thinks she wants to hang with the super-rich kids. She also wants to hang out with boys, several boys, enough boys to drive her parents nuts. But she finds that hanging with the Tensome is what she really wants to do. And she learns that she has a gift she has always wanted, but which she always thought she never had. In this book, we are introduced to the rest of the Tensome and to the rest of the Teachers. Rating G; Reading Level Easy 5th Grade; Longest Word: Incomprehensibly Jennie Malloy is a young teenage girl. The day before she heads to Wizard School, she changes her name to Jenie Maloy. She hopes people will mistake her name for Genie. Her parents give her a magic diary. She can write whatever she wants to in the diary and then look it up remotely, later when she needs to know it. Her magic diary won’t let her cheat on schoolwork. But it does help her remember things, especially the names of all those boys. Jenie’s parents give her the choice of riding the Train to Wizard School or riding the Bus. Even though Jenie knows that she’ll totally loathe riding on the Bus, she agrees to do so. Jenie figures that riding the Bus to Wizard School is the right thing to do. And doing the right thing will get her into Hotel UpAbove where all the super-rich kids stayed. Well, maybe she’d only end up in Hotel Northby where the rich, but not super-rich, kids stayed. However, something went terribly wrong. For Jenie Maloy ended up in Hotel Westly. Yet, as soon as she met the hotel clerk Pinkshny Shmerimidan, she knew that they would be best friends, even though Pinkshny was several years older.

Now he was glad that his hybrid flying abominations, dim witted and useless to him, had vacated their pens. He would refill them with more powerful and intelligent creatures. Keeping this in mind, he toasted to his success with a large glass of optimism. At the same time, a jubilant Mitch, Heather, Sally, Zen and Lana were sailing back to Azorka celebrating the rescue of Heather and the capture of the Dragon Queen. Even the immortal Dragon Queen would admit that in their world wonders never cease. Wonders never cease in Immortal. There will be more disclosure of the Zapatsaurs. An introduction to visitors from outside of our solar system and powerful changes and abilities for Heather, Lana and Sally! The Wizard meets two new allies dedicated to helping him win in this exciting new episode! The unique literary voice I wish to offer to my readers is that of an individual who craves peace at all levels, in our world. Whether that be a peaceful walk at night or the peaceful negotiations of countries experiencing change. If we could all strive for this change, make it our priority, then I believe we will (magically) come into possession of higher technology. And there could be “others” outside of the aquarium that are wishing this would come true soon. The buildup of missiles can be redirected outside the aquarium for those unwanted meteorites of the future. Presently, we as peaceful individuals, should follow environmentalists by caring for the planet and being mindful of climate change.
