Book excerpt: The Voyage of the Beagle is a title commonly given to the book written by Charles Darwin published in 1839 as his Journal and Remarks, which brought him considerable fame and respect. The title refers to the second survey expedition of the ship HMS Beagle, which set sail from Plymouth Sound on 27 December 1831 under the command of captain Robert FitzRoy. While the expedition was originally planned to last two years, it lasted almost five-the Beagle did not return until 2 October 1836. Darwin spent most of this time exploring on land (three years and three months on land; 18 months at sea).

ST. JAGO—CAPE DE VERD ISLANDS After having been twice driven back by heavy south-western gales, Her Majesty's ship Beagle," a ten-gun brig, under the command of Captain Fitz Roy, R.N., sailed from Devonport on the 27th of December, 1831. The object of the expedition was to complete the survey of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego, commenced under Captain King in 1826 to 1830--to survey the shores of Chile, Peru, and of some islands in the Pacific--and to carry a chain of chronometrical measurements round the World. On the 6th of January we reached Teneriffe, but were prevented landing, by fears of our bringing the cholera: the next morning we saw the sun rise behind the rugged outline of the Grand Canary Island, and suddenly illumine the Peak of Teneriffe, whilst the lower parts were veiled in fleecy clouds. This was the first of many delightful days never to be forgotten. On the 16th of January 1832 we anchored at Porto Praya, in St. Jago, the chief island of the Cape de Verd archipelago.

This expedition under captain Robert Fitz Roy took place from December 27, 1831 to October 2, 1836. Fitz Roy sought companion for a second journey round the world, young student Charles Darwin took the opportunity and boarded the ship. He had to keep a daily log as well as detailed notebooks of his finds, and a diary which became his journal. The Beagle sailed across the Atlantic Ocean and carried out surveys around the coasts of South America, returning via Tahiti and Australia having circumnavigated the Earth. While the expedition was originally planned to last 2 years, it lasted almost five. Darwin's publication of the journal made his reputation as a scientist and author. His notes with detailed observations of plants and animals was the basis for his theory of evolution by natural selection in his world-famous work "The Origin of Species."

Book excerpt: A classic of adventure travel, this landmark of natural history is also a cornerstone in the development of evolutionary theory. The Beagle departed from England in 1831 on a voyage to map the coast of South America. Its two-year itinerary stretched into five years, and the ship's naturalist, young Charles Darwin, made the observations that led to his concept of natural selection. Darwin based many of his conclusions upon his study of the unique creatures of the Galp̀agos: marine and land iguanas, giant tortoises with a variety of shells, and more than 20 species of finches, each with a distinctive beak. Upon his return home in 1836, Darwin published a series of books based on the notebooks and diaries from his voyage, including this historic work, essential reading for scientists, historians, and anyone with an interest in the natural world.

The Voyage of the Beagle chronicles his five-year journey around the world and especially the coastal waters of South America as a naturalist on the H.M.S. Beagle. While traveling through these unexplored countries collecting specimens, Darwin began to formulate the theories of evolution and natural selection realized in his master work, The Origin of Species. Travel memoir and scientific primer alike, The Voyage of the Beagle is a lively and accessible introduction to the mind of one of history's most influential thinkers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published between 1909 and 1917 under the name "Harvard Classics," this stupendous 51-volume set-a collection of the greatest writings from literature, philosophy, history, and mythology-was assembled by American academic CHARLES WILLIAM ELIOT (1834-1926), Harvard University's longest-serving president. Also known as "Dr. Eliot's Five Foot Shelf," it represented Eliot's belief that a basic liberal education could be gleaned by reading from an anthology of works that could fit on five feet of bookshelf. Volume XXIX is the legendary travel adventure and naturalist's diary by English scientist, naturalist, and geologist CHARLES DARWIN (1809-1882), which features the research and observations that formed the basis for his revolutionary 1859 work, On the Origin of Species. First published in 1839 under the title Journal and Remarks, The Voyage of the Beagle is the enthralling account of the five-year journey he undertook on the HMS Beagle, an English exploratory vessel, which sailed South America and the South Pacific from 1831 to 1836. It is even more fascinating for the hints it offers of Darwin's thought processes, which would later forever change the field of biology.
