Book Synopsis The Hammer and the Cross by : Robert Ferguson

Book excerpt: Now, with the chamber boarded up, came what was probably the heart of the proceedings. Four or five dogs and two more oxen were slaughtered, as well as fifteen horses that had first been run to exhaustion. The furniture, tools and carriages scattered across the foredeck were bathed in their blood.Stones were then piled over the ship, breaking many of the grave-goods and rendering them unusable. The sights and sounds accompanying such an orgy of blood-letting we might perhaps be able to imagine, the atmosphere conjured by it probably not. As the mourners then set about completing the mound the sight before them must have been eerie and awe-inspiring, the blood-spattered ship with its cargo of dead women seeming to lurch forward across the field in a last attempt to shake off the engulfing wave of dark earth rising behind it. The meadow flowers preserved from this stage of the proceedings were autumnal, showing that the whole process from the opening of the furrow to the closing of the mound must have taken about four months. Clearly at least one of the women had died long before the burial took place.

Download or read book Erik the Viking written by Terry Jones and published by Farshore. This book was released on 2024-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Applause Books). This is a story of a Viking warrior who thought there must be more to life than rape and pillage. Erick's doubts about his own lifestyle begin when he inadvertently falls in love with a rather pretty girl he has just killed. Not that he meant to kill her, you understand, but this being the legendary Age of Ragnarok killing people is rather in fashion, and mishaps are bound to occur. According to the Old Norse legend, this is the age when Fenrir the Wolf has swallowed the Sun, and the Great Winter has settled over the World. It is an Axe Age, a Sword Age, when brother will turn against brother, and men will fight each other until the World is finally destroyed...unless...unless someone can awaken the gods and bring the Sun back to shine upon the Earth once again. Comedy, spectacular adventure and pure fantasy combine to tell this story of a man's attempt to bring peace to a war-torn world.

We have thousands of titles available, and we invite you to search for us by name, contact us via our website, or download our most recent catalogues. The following narrative is not so much a story as a biography. My hero is not an imaginary one; he was a real flesh and blood man who reigned as King of Norway just nine centuries ago. The main facts of his adventurous career -- his boyhood of slavery in Esthonia, his life at the court of King Valdemar, his wanderings as a viking, the many battles he fought, his conversion to Christianity in England, and his ultimate return to his native land -- are set forth in the various Icelandic sagas dealing with the period in which he lived. I have made free use of these old time records, and have added only such probable incidents as were necessary to give a continuous thread of interest to the narrative. These sagas, like the epics of Homer, were handed down from generation to generation by word of mouth, and they were not committed to writing until a long time after Olaf Triggvison's death, so that it is not easy to discriminate between the actual facts as they occurred and the mere exaggerated traditions which must surely have been added to the story of his life as it was told by the old saga men at their winter firesides. But in most instances the records corroborate each other very exactly, and it may be taken that the leading incidents of the story are historically true.
