Defender of the Weak. Not someone you want to mess with… Freya is dreading her upcoming birthday when she’ll officially have to take up her duties as a Valkyrie. She doesn’t want to follow in the footsteps of the legends before her—legends including her mother and sisters. And she certainly doesn’t want anything to do with humans! Freya thinks humans are cruel, hate-filled creatures, but as she observes their world, she begins to wonder what it would be like to make friends with the girls or laugh with the boys she sees. And what would it be like to live without the fear that she could cause someone’s death with a single touch? Then when she’s sent on her first mission, she reaps the soul of a fallen soldier with unfinished business…business that sends her on an epic quest to the mortal world. Will Freya find the true meaning of being a human, or will she finally accept her destiny?

They protect some, but guide spears, arrows and sword blades into the bodies of others. Viking myths about valkyries attempt to elevate the banality of war – to make the pain and suffering, the lost limbs and deformities, the piles of lifeless bodies of young men, glorious and worthwhile. Rather than their death being futile, it is their destiny and good fortune, determined by divine beings. The women in these stories take full part in the power struggles and upheavals in their communities, for better or worse. Drawing on the latest historical and archaeological evidence, Valkyrie introduces readers to the dramatic and fascinating texts recorded in medieval Iceland, a culture able to imagine women in all kinds of roles carrying power, not just in this world, but pulling the strings in the other-world, too. In the process, this fascinating book uncovers the reality behind the myths and legends to reveal the dynamic, diverse lives of Viking women.

Book excerpt: Emerging from modern history as a remarkable and much-loved family, the Mitfords have remained largely unrepentant concerning theirs and particularly Unity's enthusiastic support of Hitler, the Nazis, Oswald Mosley and British fascism. However, having initially encouraged and supported Unity's affair with Hitler, they subsequently insisted that she had in fact been a rather unintelligent, clumsy lump of a girl, whose virginal relationship with one of the most terrifying dictators of all time was a mere unrequited romantic obsession. As this book will show, nothing could be further from the truth. Following further research and reexamination of the family's, friends' and journalists' often contradictory evidence, plus new information supplied by the author's own family and friends, Hitler's Valkyrie will reveal that while Unity was, like Hitler, an extreme fantasist, there was very little of the juvenile romantic about her. On the contrary, she was highly intelligent, free-spirited and athletic. She was also the only Englishwoman who came close to being capable of changing the course of the Second World War. Here David R.L. Litchfield untangles the decades-old web of intrigue surrounding Unity Mitford and one of the most dangerous men of all time, creating a fascinating book of unparalleled importance to the Mitford legacy.

The two-hundred-year-old Valkyrie knew the moment she woke up on a planet of ash and death that her homeworld, Asgard, is gone. The devastation, known as Ragnarok, swept through Asgard, brought on by none other than Loki, the god of mischief. That arrogant bastard brought the fire giants of Muspelheim to wipe out the entire population, and their flames consumed everything. Still, Vera will not give up hope that survivors are out there, somewhere in the Nine Realms. She watched the space transports take off with her own eyes. One of those transports held her dearest sister, Edda. Vera will tear the worlds apart to be reunited with her. With the help of an annoyingly stoic Elven swordsman and a burlesque-dancing human, Vera sets off to search the Nine Realms for Asgardian survivors and her sister. But something darker lurks in the Nine Realms, whispering doom for all the planets in the galaxy. Vera might be the only one who can save them—but don’t get too excited. She is never the hero. She is winged death.

A weapon to wield against those who threatened their power. The soldiers she grew up and trained with are the only family she knows. When her partner—her lover—betrays her and The Order shuns her, Kirby’s world shatters. She spirals into a darkness that threatens to destroy her. The combat instructor Kirby lusted after from a distance, pulls her from pit and offers her a new path forward. Vengeance and a chance to do right by the people she once hunted. But he’s keeping a secret. At least one of the prophecies drilled into her head in school is about her—the Valkyrie who Odin cursed to an eternity of loss. He and the other immortal men she’s loved in her previous lives have searched for her through time and around the world, to keep her alive in this life. These three gorgeous, sexy immortals promise her family. A future. After so much betrayal and heartbreak though, Kirby doesn’t know if she can trust the man who lied to her for years, or his companions. When the order realizes Kirby is still alive, she becomes their most prominent target. Is she’s strong enough to face the threat alone, or is putting her faith in the allies who can help her survive an even deadlier choice? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of Old Norse Religion is a truly multidisciplinary and international field of research. The rituals, myths and narratives of pre-Christian Scandinavia are investigated and interpreted by archaeologists, historians, art historians, historians of religion as well as scholars of literature, onomastics and Scandinavian studies. For obvious reasons, these studies belong to the main curricula in Scandinavia but are also carried out at many other universities in Europe, the United States and Australia a fact that is evident to any reader of this book. In order to bring this broad and varied field of research together, an international conference on Old Norse religion was held in Lund in June 2004. About two hundred delegates from more than fifteen countries took part. The intention was to gather researchers to encourage and improve scholarly exchange and dialogue, and Old Norse religion in long-term perspectives presents a selection of the proceedings from that conference. The 75 contributions elucidate topics such as worldview and cosmology, ritual and religious practice, myth and memory as well as the reception and present-day use of Old Norse religion. The main editors of this volume have directed the multidisciplinary research project Roads to Midgard since 2000. The project is based at Lund University and funded by the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation.
