Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the vital nature of the subject of leadership in Asia and looks, in particular, at the processes and practices within the Asia Pacific region. It describes how leadership processes differ across various regions and teaches managers how to better employ these processes in order to improve the success of their organisations. The work moves beyond looking only at Western ideas and explores further leadership perspectives based on differing cultural foundations. It considers the influences of Confucianism, Daoism, Mohism and Legalism and also reflects the character of different leadership styles, such as paternalistic, benevolent transactional and transformational styles, as well as authentic and entrepreneurial approaches. Throughout the text, a wide range of international contributors adopt an array of leadership and other theories, cases, sectors and methods to discuss leadership in Asia. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Asia Pacific Business Review.

Book excerpt: Under the label of “the socialist market economy with Chinese characteristics”, the Chinese Government has made a firm commitment to economic reform, though still retaining tight political control. Thus, under conditions of liberal economic systems and autocratic rule, a new capitalist system is emerging in China; its top companies are managed by private entrepreneurs, government bodies or a combination of both. This book, presented in an easily accessible format, fills an important gap in the growing literature on China in the global economy and provides a research reference tool on China's top companies. It offers a comprehensive directory listing of the Top 100 corporations in China, thus enhancing the research potential on China for students, researchers and businesses. As a general reference guide to the Chinese economy, A Guide to the Top 100 Companies in China provides up-to-date and comprehensive coverage of the top Chinese enterprises. Corporations from Hong Kong and Taiwan that conduct significant business in China are also included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given Australia’s lack of energy security strategy, it is not surprising that the country is void of institutional knowledge and know-how of Russian foreign energy strategy. The ‘lucky country’ as it were, relies entirely on sea-lines of communication to the north to supply fuel and to export Australian coal and natural gas. Australia has entered the 2020s as the world’s largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) exporter; however, maintaining complacency in Canberra’s current export activities will ultimately lead to a long-term security crisis. This book critically examines Russian energy strategy in the Asia-Pacific, with a view to determining the security implications for Australia. Russia is important for global energy security chains because of its vast resource wealth and its geographical position – a pivotal position to supply both the European and Asian markets. Australia has no such luxury, geographically constrained as an island continent; it relies on the nearby Asia-Pacific import market to demand our energy and to facilitate the delivery of our national oil supplies. Understanding Russian foreign energy strategy in the region is crucial given the growing energy requirements in Australia’s emerging Asia-Pacific arena.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential review of the history, benefits, limitations, failures, and politics of pipelines, with a core focus on potential harms to environmental and human health. The United States holds the world record of having the largest network of energy pipelines, with more than 2.4 million miles of pipeline transporting oil or natural gas. Russia, China, and Canada as well as many other countries also have extensive pipelines. How safe is this means of transport, and is there a potential harm to the environment and human health? In this text, professor Madelon L. Finkel presents an essential and clearly-stated review of the pros and cons of transporting oil and natural gas by pipeline. Finkel dispels myths, inaccuracies, and misconceptions and highlights the potential dangers that must be considered in any country's energy policy. Pipeline Politics: Assessing the Benefits and Harms of Energy Policy provides a broad and accessible analysis of pipelines, from their history and safety to their politics and risks. Finkel examines the benefits and costs of pipelines in parallel as well as issues of environmental justice; the fairness of treatment of the people affected; and the development, implementation, and enforcement of pipeline laws, regulations, and policies.
