Book excerpt: The inspiring true story of a US Special Forces soldier who was medically retired after stepping on an IED, and his incredible return to active duty. Sergeant First Class (SFC) Ryan Hendrickson is a brave, determined, and courageous soldier -- a Green Beret clearing the way for his twelve-man team while conducting combat operations against the Taliban. As the "tip of the spear," his role is to ensure the route taken by U.S. and Afghan troops are free of IEDs -- improvised explosive devices. Many soldiers do not survive their last step; those who do often lose at least one limb. While rescuing an Afghan soldier outside a mud-hut compound in 2010 -- knowing that he was in "uncleared" territory -- Ryan stepped on an IED with his right foot. The device exploded, leaving his foot dangling at the end of his leg. American soldiers losing a limb is an all-too-common occurrence. But what makes Ryan's story different is that after undergoing two dozen surgeries and a tortuous rehabilitation, he was medically retired but fought to return to active duty. Multiple skin grafts to his leg and right foot successfully reattached his lower leg, and he was aided in his recovery by wearing a new prosthetic device known as an IDEO (Intrepid Dynamic Exoskeletal Orthosis). Once he passed a series of crucial physical tests, Ryan was able to rejoin the Green Berets within a year and physically perform his duties, redeploying to Afghanistan in March 2012. In 2016, he volunteered to return to Afghanistan with Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group. During a firefight with the Taliban, he risked his life under heavy enemy fire to rescue three Afghan soldiers cut off from friendly forces and return the bodies of two dead Afghan soldiers under the ethos that "no one gets left behind." For his heroic efforts on the battlefield, SFC Ryan Hendrickson was awarded a Silver Star, the nation's third-highest award for valor. An engaging and harrowing account, Tip of the Spear tells the amazing story of one Green Beret's indomitable spirit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Foreword: This volume focuses on that second and longer campaign. But rather than a narrative of the overall course of the conflict, it provides a soldier's-eye view of the war by focusing on detailed accounts of selected engagements. Each illustrates the everyday challenges that America's soldiers faced in a difficult struggle against an inventive and often elusive enemy. Weapons, doctrine, and procedures developed to fight a conventional campaign against a similar opposing force had to be adapted to fit a different type of conflict. The U.S. Army's combat and support forces brought both resourcefulness and resilience to this task while continuing to demonstrate the same courage shown by previous generations fighting the nation's battles. These stories not only symbolize the tip of the spear formed by units in contact, but they also represent the contributions of all American men and women who have served their country in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Taken together, these accounts will provide our deploying leaders and soldiers a better understanding of the environment that they will encounter and prepare them for the work that must be done.

Soldier, lone combatant, silent killer - unmentioned by his commanding officers, an invaluable resource to field intelligence, an enigma to his comrades in arms and a curse to his enemies. The advanced intelligence and demoralizing effect provided by the scout-sniper is often the key to military victory. In his own words, Sgt Cannady explains the process of becoming a member of an elite fraternity; both what is gained in the achievement and what is lost. The demons, both real and unreal, that the few men of this unspoken profession face. It is a brief look into a raw and brutal side of war unseen by the average soldier from the view point of a combatant both revered and hated. From the training regiment, to special operations in Honduras, to the sands of Desert Storm, a sniper describes not only the skills and mind set required to perform and succeed as a warrior whose engagement with the enemy is as personal as it is deadly, but also the harsh reality of coping with life after stalking the world's most dangerous animal - man.

Book excerpt: In these days when so many expect so much recognition for doing so little, leadership seems easy, when it's really harder than ever. To be that person who truly takes a chance, makes a stand, and ventures out in front of the crowd requires courage, commitment, and conviction-qualities that more than ever seem to be in short supply. There's no shortcut to the skills that mark a true leader, but there are definite strategies that can help you set your internal compass, find the right route, and steer others onto the right path. Leading at the Tip of the Spear - The Leader focuses on the physical, mental, emotional, intuitional, and spiritual abilities that are found in leaders who are willing to lead. You will learn to develop your individual values and purpose, strengthen your foresight and failure-resistance, step up your self-control, plan for any contingencies, and always stay on the offense. It will take effort and energy to understand the proposed process and fully implement it in life and business, but leadership is all about doing hard things for the right reasons. Once you've mastered true leadership, nothing can stop you from having the career and the life you've worked for.

Book excerpt: In this terrifying tale of humanity’s desperate stand against a robot uprising, Daniel H. Wilson has written the most entertaining sci-fi thriller in years. Not far into our future, the dazzling technology that runs our world turns against us. Controlled by a childlike—yet massively powerful—artificial intelligence known as Archos, the global network of machines on which our world has grown dependent suddenly becomes an implacable, deadly foe. At Zero Hour—the moment the robots attack—the human race is almost annihilated, but as its scattered remnants regroup, humanity for the first time unites in a determined effort to fight back. This is the oral history of that conflict, told by an international cast of survivors who experienced this long and bloody confrontation with the machines. Brilliantly conceived and amazingly detailed, Robopocalypse is an action-packed epic with chilling implications about the real technology that surrounds us.

The lightning campaign that toppled the Saddam Hussein regime in Iraq in the spring of 2003 seemed to herald the arrival of a new way of war, as Germany’s blitzkrieg had done at the beginning of World War II. But the initial victory soon devolved into a persistent counterinsurgency conflict reminiscent of the long U.S. effort to pacify the Philippines after the rapid defeat of Spain in 1898. In Iraq, American soldiers and their Coalition partners had merely traded one fairly weak and generally conventional opponent for a more deadly, diverse, and determined foe relying on the tactics of the guerrilla and the terrorist. This volume focuses on that second and longer campaign. But rather than a narrative of the overall course of the conflict, it provides a soldier’s-eye view of the war by focusing on detailed accounts of selected engagements. Each illustrates the everyday challenges that America’s soldiers faced in a difficult struggle against an inventive and often elusive enemy. Weapons, doctrine, and procedures developed to fight a conventional campaign against a similar opposing force had to be adapted to fit a different type of conflict. There, Steve learns long-buried secrets about his father's murder, confronts difficult choices, and finds himself caught between two worlds. Book excerpt: Tip of the Spear: Our Species and Technology at a Crossroads is an examination of the state of technology and its disruptive influence on the fate of humanity. The book argues that the changes before us are existential and that we need to have a new conversation to be sure we are prepared. We have for the first time in our species existence, Jim suggests, all of the tools to solve all of the problems facing the world in the next 10 to 15 years; or those same tools will end life as we know it. It is both a cautionary tale about the inadequacy of our linear systems of organization in the face of exponential technological change as well as a hopeful treatise on how by creating a new definition of innovation based on a new Social Contract that with - as a species - we can meet the challenges head on. The book is suitable for a broad audience - anyone trying to reconcile the complex pressure of the present with the demands of the future: the academic leader attempting to bring her students into a new understanding of the world of rapidly changing technology; parents trying to help plot a course through the minefield of an always-on digital frontier for their teenage kids; and, the business leader trying to build a new organization infused with purpose and a global narrative. At the beginning of the book, Gibson's Three Laws of Disruption paints a compelling picture of the state of the world in 2018. The slope of the technology change curve is growing steeper; the genies of technology invention never go back in the bottle; and, our systems of organization - education, democracy, capitalism - are ill-prepared to cope. Layered on this reality are the hard truths of the fall of human discourse, the rise of Fake News, the weaponization of Social media and the remerging spectre of nationalism. The second third of the book walks the reader into the next decade or so through the eyes of two very different young girls: Olivia is a typical 13-year-old from Canada; Mervis is from the developing nation of Malawi. Their stories provide possible scenarios for all of us to contemplate if we don't deal with the challenges of today. By changing the narrative into a set of personal stories, Tip of the Spear brings the reader into worlds we can understand and conversations that we have all had. It also introduces us to the developing world narrative. Mervis' story provides hints into magnificent possibilities for the developing world; one that - with the right investments - could see our emerging economies by-pass the challenges of the past with the promise of future technologies of transportation, energy and collaboration. The final third delivers a new vocabulary of innovation and change. It begins with a new definition of innovation, called "The Innovation of Ways" contrasted with the traditional "Innovation of Things." This new "way" imagines a new social contract for all of the roles we play in our lives: As a parent, voter, professional, leader and teacher. In the cautionary and optimistic conclusion, Jim challenges us to think and act exponentially by creating a new culture of trust and suggest that meeting the Tip of the Spear head on is possible AND urgent.

Book excerpt: "When people ask why I joined the Coast Guard, I respond that I was twenty-two, blond, and fit. In most military services that is guaranteed sexual harassment. She takes you from serious topics of sexual harassment and suicide to laughing about how her predator's moment to make her prey was oddly interrupted. You are a fly on the wall during her botched FBI polygraph and will be scratching your head about her CIA classmate who U-turns during their surveillance-detection training like she just saw a sign for a sale at Macy's.

Book excerpt: A Danish filmmaker, under the apprenticeship of three Papua New Guinean master sailors, set off from Milne Bay, Papua New Guinea, on the 30th of August 2016 on a world-record circumnavigation of the island of New Guinea in a traditional sailing canoe called the Tawali Pasana. Over the course of 13 months and 21 days - and some 6300 km of high adventure - what became known as 'the fellowship of the Tawali Pasana' created a modern-day odyssey (on a shoestring budget) battling relentless monsoon winds, dangerous seas, pirates and crocodiles. Prevailing against all the odds, the voyage generated enormous media coverage and inspired the young people of New Guinea to celebrate their extraordinary seafaring culture. "Sailing a traditional outrigger canoe around the vast island of New Guinea is a journey through time, across myriad cultures upon the far-flung seas of Arafura, Seram, Bismarck, and the Pacific Ocean. Thor's voyage shows that, in the 21st Century, there are still great adventures!" Peter Hillary "The very first circumnavigation of New Guinea in a traditional sailing canoe again illustrates, as my father auspiciously once said, "To travel, to experience and learn ... that is to live." Norbu Tenzing Norgay "Thor's adventure is an encouragement to anyone who - dares to do." Sarah Outen
