Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Grammar: And How to Teach It The principal reason for adding another Grammar to the many already in print, is the fact that another is needed. In no branch of Common School study does the labor expended appear to produce so little in the way of results. It has even been discussed in State Teachers' Associations, whether the study of Gram mar is productive of any good. And, since the facts pertaining to language are certainly worth knowing, the fair conclusion is, that the facts can be presented in some form better suited to the necessities of teachers and pupils than any which has yet been tried. This volume presents a method of teaching Grammar which has been carefully tested in the school-room. The book contains a selection of the facts pertaining to lan guage. In teaching for many years, one learns that certain facts are to be retained firmly, certain others to be read, or used as illustrations, and others used as han dles bv which to grasp and hold other facts. Gramma rians attempting to make their school grammars complete treatises upon the study of language, have put so much in them that they have bewildered and disgusted the pupil. A grammar should be judged by what it leaves out as much as by what it contains. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Language: Its Grammar, History and Literature It is hoped that the book will prove useful in high schools, academies, and seminaries, as well as to candidates for teachers' examinations and civil service examinations. The various topics have been prepared upon the assumption that the stu dent has already studied a part of the work in an elementary form. The most salient features of the language have been de scribed, and minor details have been left for the teacher to fill in as needed. The utmost clearness and simplicity have been the aim of the writer, and he has been obliged to sacrifice many interesting details to this aim. The study of English grammar is necessarily becoming more and more historical. There are scores of inflections and constructions and idioms which cannot be truly or adequately explained without a reference to the past states of the language, to the time when it was a synthetic or inflected language, like German or Latin. The subject of syntax has been set forth in the form of rules. This is thought to be better for young students who require firm and clear dogmatic statements of fact, but the skilful teacher will work up to these rules by the interesting process of induction, and, when possible, will induce his pupils to draw the general conclusions from the data given. Another convenience that will be found by both teacher and student in this form of rules is that they can be compared with the rules of foreign languages, such as Latin, French, and German. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Grammar In teaching the History of the English Language, I have looked in vain for a more available copy of Ben Jonson's English Grammar than that found in his collected works. A production so peculiarly distinct from The Hue and Cry after Cupid, or the Pindaric Ode, seems to call for a volume to itself. And the student of the history of English certainly needs it, as the grammar of the best standing for the seventeenth century. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rand-McNally English Grammar and Composition New text-books on grammar appear annually, a fact which proves clearly the difficulty the teacher experiences in finding the ideal book for school use. Many of these books have admirable features, but few are adapted to the needs of the learner. The young pupil does not need an exhaustive treatise. What he does need is a concise statement of the actual facts of modern English brief, clear definitions of the laws of language, and ample illustra tion of these principles by examples that illustrate, chosen from the masters of English. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Language and Its Grammar In view of such a necessity in high and normal schools, the author combines in this book the history and derivation of English forms of speech with an analysis of the language and its functions. If the technical terms (which are employed because only by them can the science of language he presented) are mastered in the beginning, the student will find no difficulty in following the author's method to'the end. It will be easy to trace the logical consistency of the language with itself, and the harmony of its develop ment, which together give our glorious English tongue its expansive and expressive power. It will also be ap parent how this language has been able to subordinate all the accidents of an increasing vocabulary to the normal functions of a generous and flexible continuity of life. While this book is especially designed for normal and training schools and teacher-training classes in high schools, it is hoped that it will be found. Valuable as a means of self-help to large numbers of teachers who are striving to secure a better preparation for their work. It is thought that it is also well adapted for use in the summer schools which are now so prominent a fea ture of the educational work of the country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A School Grammar of the English Language Only those who, by teaching English grammar, come into Close contact with the young pupil, can know the difficulty of securing a satisfactory text-book. The prob lem of making an elementary treatise that is scholarly as well as sufficiently simple is one not easy of solution. The temptation to make a subject easy by mechanical devices or by short-cut methods is strong with the teacher; and the writer who supplies the text-book is strongly drawn to those expedients that will make the manual merely the most teachable. On the other hand, there is a temptation to the student of historical English to sup pose the grammar school child not only eager for the intricacies of linguistic development, but able to com prehend them.
