The morphology and structure was characterized using transmission electron microscopy and x-ray powdered diffraction. Visible emissions occurring near 530 and 550 nm and 660 - 670 nm consistent with the 2H11/2, 4S3/2 --> 4I15/2 and 4F9/2 --> 4I15/2 transitions, respectively, were observed under 808, 980, and 1560 nm excitation. The upconverting mechanisms excited at 808, 980, and 1560 nm have been investigated in detail. The power dependent behavior of the upconverted emission intensities for singly doped erbium phosphors excited at 808 and 980 nm indicated a two-photon excitation process. Likewise, the ytterbium and erbium co-doped phosphors excited at 980 nm also indicated a two-photon excitation process. Doping with 10% erbium showed the most intense emissions under 808 and 1560 nm excitation. Yttrium oxysulfide co-doped with 15% ytterbium and 3% erbium showed the most intense emissions under 980 nm excitation. Upon 1560 nm excitation, the intensity of the red emission band was significantly enhanced by co-doping erbium with ytterbium. Concentration quenching became apparent when either the concentration of erbium or ytterbium reached 20%.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Erbium ytterbium co-doped super-fluorescent fiber source (EYD-SFS) has been simulated by a theoretical model based on rate equations and power transfer equations. The output performances of four basic structures of EYD-SFS have been expressed, and it indicated that the DPF structure is a preferable structure. The dependence of output power, mean wavelength and bandwidth stability on the pump fiber length and the concentration of Er 3+ and Yb 3+ have also been studied. The results indicated with a proper doping concentration of Er 3+ and Yb 3+ of 6.0 × 10 26 ions/m 3 and 1.0 × 10 27 ions/m 3, the optimal gain fiber length is 3.6 cm. In this condition, good performances of DPF structure of EYD-SFS have been achieved.

Book excerpt: The main objective of the dissertation is to present work describing theoretical studies of planar structures with erbium doped regions and characterization of erbium doped particles. Numerical models of erbium doped Al2O3 were formulated, taking into account the up-conversion from the metastable Er3+ levels and the cross-relaxation process as a mechanism of energy transfer between Er3+ ions. The influence of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) is also fully considered in the numerical model. The first part of this research investigates the effects of design geometries and nonlinear losses on gain in silicon waveguides with multiple trenched erbium-doped Al2O3 regions. Distributing erbium ions over multi-trench areas improves the gain to nonlinear loss ratio. 0.38 dB/cm higher signal amplification was generated when comparing the multiple and single-trench configurations. In the second part of this work, a dielectric vertical emitter structure consisting of an erbium doped active material layer sandwiched between two metallic layers is studied. In this structure, metal layers are used to guide the plasmonic pump mode that has the role of exciting the active material and act as mirrors in the vertical direction to form a cavity resonating at 1532 nm. We employ the transverse resonance method to compute the modes in the structure, and we focus on even (with respect to the x polarized electric field) TM modes. We show that such structures can be promising candidates for dielectric based vertical emitters. In the last part of this dissertation, characterization of micron sized erbium doped particles is discussed. We demonstrate the feasibility of single-shot, single-detector high-resolution imaging and tracking by a time-space-wavelength mapping technique. We experimentally demonstrate single-shot imaging at 1 line/50 ns capture rate. A correlation method is implemented to obtain the transient movement of an individual particle. This system can be further optimized for real-time imaging, tracking of multiple micro-particles or arbitrary objects.

Book excerpt: Silicon microphotonics has emerged as the leading technology to overcome the interconnect bottleneck that limits a further increase of computation power following Moore's law. Optical interconnects between different electronic microprocessors in an electronic-photonic integrated circuit (EPIC) can provide a fast, low-loss and high-bandwidth alternative to electrical interconnects, which suffer from issues such as resistive heating, RC delays and channel crosstalk at an increasing device density. A crucial device in such an electronic-photonic integrated circuit is a compact, high-gain and low power optical amplifier to compensate for signal attenuation due to propagation losses and to recover signal strength after subsequent 3dB splits during fanout of the optical signal to different microprocessors. Erbium ions (Er3+) are an excellent candidate to provide amplification around [lambda] = 1.54[mu]m for optical telecommunications. Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) have already enabled long-haul optical data transmission through silica optical fibers, but scaling down a fiber amplifier to an on-chip erbium-doped waveguide amplifier (EDWA) brings along significant materials and device design challenges. In this thesis, erbium-ytterbium oxide (Er.Yb2.0 3) and erbium-ytterbium-yttrium silicate (ErxYbYY 2 ,ySi 2O7 ) compounds are investigated as novel materials systems for the development of EDWAs. The high erbium and ytterbium solubility (>1022 cm-3) and refractive index (1.71

This book was released on 1997 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We discuss the upconversion luminescence efficiencies of phosphors that generate red, green, and blue light. The phosphors studied are single crystals and powders co-doped with Er{sup 3+} and Yb{sup 3+}, and with Tm{sup 3+} and Yb{sup 3+}. The Yb ions are pumped near 980 nm; transfers of two or three quanta to the co-doped rare earth ion generate visible luminescence. The main contribution embodied in this work is the quantitative measurement of this upconversion efficiency, based on the use of a calibrated integrating sphere, determination of the fraction of pump light absorbed, and careful control of the pump laser beam profile. The green phosphors are the most efficient, yielding efficiency values as high as 4 %, with the red and blue materials giving 1 - 2 %. Saturation was observed in all cases, suggesting that populations of upconversion steps of the ions are maximized at higher power. Quasi-CW modeling of the intensity- dependent upconversion efficiency was attempted; input data included level lifetimes, transition cross sections, and cross-relaxation rate coefficients. The saturation of the Yb, Er:fluoride media is explained as the pumping of Er{sup 3+} ions into a bottleneck (long-lived state)- the 4I132 metastable level, making them unavailable for further excitation transfer. 32 refs., 5 figs., 3 tabs.

This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing need for compact, efficient rare-earth doped waveguide optical amplifiers for use in optical communications. Zn2Si0.5Ge0.5O4 (ZSG) is a promising new host material for Erbium(Er) due to the high concentration of Er which can be incorporated and the high optical activity of the incorporated Er. In this thesis, the absorption and emission cross-sections of Er in Er-doped ZSG are measured both through an analysis of the photo-luminescence spectra, and from direct absorption measurements. Peak cross sections are about 3 x 10-24 m2, comparable to measurements on other oxide-based glass amplifiers. The population statistics of the excited Er-level (4I13/2), along with the excited state lifetime, are determined through a novel rate-equations-based frequency domain method in which the spontaneous emission power at 1534 nm is measured as a function of pump power (980nm) and pump modulation frequency. The determined lifetime of 2ms is comparable to the 2.3ms measured using a conventional pump probe technique. The novel analysis technique yields the Er population statistics and lifetime under different pumping conditions independent of the unknown and variable coupling in and out of the waveguide. This method predicts zero net gain at 70mW, about what is observed. Comparison of calculated gain (based on Er density and measured cross-sections) with measured gains suggest that only about 20-30% of the Er in the material is optically active. Thus, by a systematic study of cross sections, Er population statistics and lifetime, and fraction of optically active Er as a function of Er density, the mechanisms for gain quenching with concentration can be studied. A 4.7cm long sample demonstrated a peak fiber-to-fiber net gain of 2̃ dB and a signal enhancement of>13 dB. Cavity characteristics were measured using an analysis of coherent reflection under no pumping. The facet reflectivity was determined to be 0.27 and the scattering/absorption loss was 1.05/cm. These losses, compared with an achievable gain of 0.25/cm under full inversion, suggest that optically pumped lasing at this concentration is not possible. Measurements techniques discussed in this thesis can be used to model and improve other rare-earth based amplifiers.
