Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Relation Between the Divine and Human Elements in Holy Scripture: Eight Lectures Preached Before the University of Oxford in the Year 1863, on the Foundation of the Late Rev. John Bampton, M.A., Canon of Salisbury The Spirit itself beareth witness with our Spirit, that we are the children of God.' introduction. - the influence of the Holy Spirit, whether before or since the Fall, not such as to supersede the free agency of man. The unfettered action of our faculties within their own sphere compatible with our dependence on the grace of God for all good. The consequent combination of a divine and human element in all our holy thoughts and works. Probability that in that purest form of spiritual influence to which we owe the Holy Scriptures the divine and human elements will both be complete. Erroneous tendencies of opposite theories, which on the one hand cause the divine to exclude the human, and on the other hand cause the human to blot out the divine. In suggesting that these may be corrected by admitting the completeness Of both elements, we make no attempt to draw a frontier line between those elements, or to define the mode of the Divine influence; but we know the avenue through which the Holy Spirit reaches us - namely, through the spirit in ourselves. Book excerpt: In six closely-reasoned chapters, Joseph Gordon presents a detailed account of a Christian doctrine of Scripture in the fullest context of systematic theology. Divine Scripture in Human Understanding addresses the confusing plurality of contemporary approaches to Christian Scripture—both within and outside the academy—by articulating a traditionally grounded, constructive systematic theology of Christian Scripture. Utilizing primarily the methodological resources of Bernard Lonergan and traditional Christian doctrines of Scripture recovered by Henri de Lubac, it draws upon achievements in historical-critical study of Scripture, studies of the material history of Christian Scripture, reflection on philosophical hermeneutics and philosophical and theological anthropology, and other resources to articulate a unified but open horizon for understanding Christian Scripture today. Following an overview of the contemporary situation of Christian Scripture, Joseph Gordon identifies intellectual precedents for the work in the writings of Irenaeus, Origen, and Augustine, who all locate Scripture in the economic work of the God to whom it bears witness by interpreting it through the Rule of Faith. Subsequent chapters draw on Scripture itself; classical sources such as Irenaeus, Origen, Augustine, and Aquinas; the fruit of recent studies on the history of Scripture; and the work of recent scholars and theologians to provide a contemporary Christian articulation of the divine and human locations of Christian Scripture and the material history and intelligibility and purpose of Scripture in those locations. The resulting constructive position can serve as a heuristic for affirming the achievements of traditional, historical-critical, and contextual readings of Scripture and provides a basis for addressing issues relatively underemphasized by those respective approaches.

Book excerpt: This document's purpose is to spell out the Church's understanding of the nature of revelation--the process whereby God communicates with human beings. It touches upon questions about Scripture, tradition, and the teaching authority of the Church. The major concern of the document is to proclaim a Catholic understanding of the Bible as the "word of God." Key elements include: Trinitarian structure, roles of apostles and bishops, and biblical reading in a historical context.

Book excerpt: As the question of inspiration has been so much before the minds of Christians, and indeed of all men, in countries where Christianity is professed, and is a vital question for every soul, I would desire to notice one point in connection with it, because on it even those who are accounted orthodox have used very equivocal language. It is what is called the "human element" in it. That there is a human element is evident, for it is men who are inspired, men whose language and whose minds have been used. I say, whose minds have been used; for the apostle tells of speaking with his understanding; but the expression is used to signify also the defect and errors to which man's mind is liable. Now this last means man's mind left to itself, that is, not inspired: a very different thing from inspiring man's mind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Paul Wells takes the reader deep into the thought of James Barr, the prominent and controversial Oxford professor known for his works on biblical semantics, interpretation, and authority. Barr's criticisms of both modern biblical theology and fundamentalism and his rejection of traditional views of inspiration and authority provide the background for his proposal to view the Bible as a progressing human tradition. In this radical alternative, Barr seeks a way of "encouraging the Scriptures to speak freely." Wells contends, however, that Barr's critique is not radical enough to solve a major remaining problem of the relation of Scripture's divine and human factors. Wells's own assessment of that problem and proposed solution are found in his conclusion.
