For the person who truly wants to seek God and learn to please Him, Hebrews 11:6 tells us that: ?But without faith it is impossible to please God: for him that cometh to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarded of them that diligently seek Him? Faith is vital to a Christian. In fact, without it, no one can please God. Notice this verse says that those seeking God ?must believe that He is.' Also the book articulates that ?a deep belief in God, who ?rewards? all who ?diligently seek Him, requires proof of His existence.' It says it is ?After proof has been established, then'and only then can one have faith'absolute confidence that what man does is being recorded in God's mind, to be remembered when he receives his reward.' If you are uncertain that God exists because proof of that existence has not been firmly established, then, under fire, your faith will wane or disappear. But when you truly believe in what Jesus Christ did on the Cross of Calvary, God's Divine love will redeem you and set you free from the heavy load of sin.

The practical fruits of the grace of God in the life of the true believer is a recurring theme throughout the book, particularly set forth in the chapter, "The Evidences of the New Birth." The first section of the book is devoted to explaining why the grace of God is so desperately needed by every human being. The fall of the human race through the sin of the first man Adam as described in Genesis 3 and Romans 5:12-19 is clearly set forth, followed by a detailed exposition of its consequences for Adam and all his posterity. There are many Scripture quotes and references given. It is a Biblical study of the doctrine of man's total depravity, and is the foundation of all that follows. The rest of the book develops the theme of the sovereign grace of each Person of the triune God in the salvation of lost sinners: sovereign election by God the Father, particular redemption by God the Son, and effectual calling by God the Holy Spirit. A key section of the book is a study of Romans 8:28-30, "God's Unbreakable Chain of Sovereign Grace," which is accompanied by a diagram illustrating this passage, and an appendix which gives an accurate Biblical definition of the foreknowledge of God, essential to properly understanding these verses. The final chapter of the book, titled "The Sovereign Grace of God in Securing Salvation," deals with the controversial subject of the security of the believer, examining it from both the Divine perspective (preservation by the triune God) and from the human perspective (the perseverance of the individual believer).

Book excerpt: The proposition that there is a correlation between language and culture or culture-specific ways of thinking can be traced back to the views of Herder and von Humboldt in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It is generally accepted today that a language, especially its lexicon, influences its speakers' cultural patterns of thought and perception in various ways, for example through a culture-specific segmentation of the extralinguistic reality, the frequency of occurrence of particular lexical items, or the existence of keywords or key word combinations revealing core cultural values. The aim of this volume is to explore the cultural dimension of a wide range of preconstructed or semi-preconstructed word combinations in English. The 17 papers of the volume are divided into four sections, focusing on particular lexemes (e.g. enjoy and its collocates), types of word combinations (e.g. proverbs and similes), use-related varieties (such as the language of tourism or answering-machine messages), and user-related varieties (such as Aboriginal English or African English). The sections are preceded by a prologue, tracing the development of the study of formulaic language, and followed by an epilogue, which draws together the threads laid out in the various papers. The relation between language and culture in general has been explored in a number of important works over the past ten years. However, the study of the relation between English phraseology and culture in particular has been largely neglected. This volume is the first book-length publication devoted entirely to this topic.
