Book excerpt: "This study was an attempt to apply a proactive approach using traffic pattern and signalized intersection characteristics to predict accident rates at signalized intersections in a city's arterial network. An earlier analysis of accident data at selected intersections within the City of Norfolk indicated that in addition to traffic volume, other controllable factors contributed to traffic accidents at specific intersections. These factors included area topography, lane patterns, type of road signs, turning lanes, etc. It is also known that administrative factors such as signal types, signal polic[i]es, road closures, etc., and maintenance factors such as road conditions, condition of the signals, condition of road signs, etc. also impact road accidents. / The objective of this study was to relate these variables to accident rate and delineate variables that are statistically more significant for accident rate. Data on several topographical variables was collected in the City of Norfolk. These variables included number of lanes, turn lanes, pedestrian crossing, restricted lanes, etc. A linear regression model was used to establish relationship between these variables and the accident rate. The resulting regression model explained 60% of the variability. It also showed that four topographical variables are more important than other variables. Those variables included number of lanes, number of turn lanes, presence of median and presence of permanent hazard like railway crossing. However, validation of model showed higher than expected variation. The model developed, in this study, overestimates the accident rate by 33% thus, limiting its practical application."--Executive summary (p. 1).

Book excerpt: The objective of this project is to examine accident data at signalized intersections for accident patterns and trends that are susceptible to correction in Montana. The Scope of Work consisted of conducting a literature review, assimilating accident trend statistics, establishing variables of influence and determining significant causal patterns. Accident trend statistics were assimilated for the 3 year period from 1992 to 1994. The following variables were evaluated: type of accident, severity, alcohol involvement, roadway surface conditions, age of drivers, and contributing factors. Montana percentages for these variables were compared to other studies and were found to be similar. Accident trends between Montana's six largest cities (Billings, Great Falls, Missoula, Butte, Helena and Bozeman) were also investigated. Accident type percentages were similar for these cities. Accident rates were calculated along the State Primary Routes in Montana to establish variables of influence and significant causal patterns. Twenty five intersections were selected for further study, in which accident report files were obtained and collision diagrams were constructed. From these collision diagrams, relationships were investigated to determine trends for signalized intersections in Montana. Variables that were determined to affect accidents in Montana were traffic volume and population of the city in which the accidents occurred. Angle and rear end type accidents accounted for the largest percentages of accident types. When compared to other states and studies, accident characteristics in Montana are similar.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the present research was to establish relationships between traffic conflicts and accidents, and to identify expected and abnormal conflict rates given various circumstances. The data upon which the conclusions and recommendations are based were collected during the summer of 1982 at 46 signalized and unsignalized intersections in the Greater Kansas City area. The conclusions are limited to daytime (0700 to 1800) and weekday (Monday-Thursday) traffic, and to dry pavement conditions. Accident/conflict ratios have been statistically determined for several types of collisions for each of four types of intersections (signalized high volume; signalized medium volume; unsignalized medium volume; unsignalized low volume). These ratios can be applied to comparable intersections to obtain an expected accident rate of a specific type after the appropriate conflict data are collected. Also, statistical procedures were developed to determine conflict rate values that could be considered "abnormally" high

Book excerpt: The objective of this research was to develop statistical models of the relationship between traffic accidents and highway geometric elements for at-grade intersections. These models also incorporated the effect of traffic control features and traffic volumes on intersection accidents. The data base used to develop the models was obtained from the California Department of Transportation. Field data were also collected for a sample of urban, four-leg, signalized intersections to provide data on additional geometric design variables and turning-movement counts that were not available from existing highway agency files.

Book excerpt: This report documents the development of guidelines for the decision whether to install a traffic signal at a marginally warranted intersection. The recommendations are based on field and simulation studies of a number of intersections across Texas which were identified as marginally warranted by various Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) districts. The research included both delay and accident studies. The TEXAS simulation model was used for the delay studies. Eight different intersection geometries and twelve generic 24-hour volume patterns representing marginally warranted conditions were simulated.
