Book Synopsis Principles of Condensed Matter Physics by : P. M. Chaikin
Download or read book Principles of Condensed Matter Physics written by P. M. Chaikin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-09-28 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in paperback, this book provides an overview of the physics of condensed matter systems. Assuming a familiarity with the basics of quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics, the book establishes a general framework for describing condensed phases of matter, based on symmetries and conservation laws. It explores the role of spatial dimensionality and microscopic interactions in determining the nature of phase transitions, as well as discussing the structure and properties of materials with different symmetries. Particular attention is given to critical phenomena and renormalization group methods. The properties of liquids, liquid crystals, quasicrystals, crystalline solids, magnetically ordered systems and amorphous solids are investigated in terms of their symmetry, generalised rigidity, hydrodynamics and topological defect structure. In addition to serving as a course text, this book is an essential reference for students and researchers in physics, applied physics, chemistry, materials science and engineering, who are interested in modern condensed matter physics.

Book Synopsis Sources and Composition of Ambient Particulate Matter by : Manousos-Ioannis Manousakas
Download or read book Sources and Composition of Ambient Particulate Matter written by Manousos-Ioannis Manousakas and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-09-10 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research related to ambient particulate matter (PM) remains very relevant today due to the adverse effects that PM have on human health. PM are pollutants with varying chemical compositions and may originate from multiple emission sources, which directly affects their toxicity. To formulate effective control and mitigation strategies, it is necessary to identify PM sources and to estimate their influence on ambient PM concentration, a process that is known as source apportionment (SA). Depending on the geographical location and characteristics of an area, many anthropogenic and natural sources may contribute to PM concentration levels, such as dust resuspension, sea salt, traffic, secondary aerosol formation, industrial emissions, ship emissions, biomass burning, power plant emissions, etc. Different methodological approaches have been used over the years to study the aforementioned topics, but some scientific challenges remain, mainly related to the following subjects: real-time chemical analysis and SA, uncertainty estimation of SA results, and analytical optimization for PM samples. Additionally, there are areas in the world for which the results regarding composition and sources of PM are still scarce. The objective of this collection was to include studies on all aspects of PM chemical characterization and source apportionment regarding the inorganic and/or organic fractions of PM.

Book Synopsis Gauge Gravitation Theory by : Gennadi? Aleksandrovich Sardanashvili
Download or read book Gauge Gravitation Theory written by Gennadi? Aleksandrovich Sardanashvili and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1992 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concise monograph is intended for students and scientists specializing in contemporary field theory, gravitation theory and modern differential geometry. The gauge theory as presented by the authors, incorporates Einstein's gravity into the universal picture of fundamental interactions and clarifies its physical nature as a Higgs field. A key point advanced here is the spontaneous breakdown of space-time symmetries according to the equivalence principle. The jet manifold generalization of the fibre bundle machinery is used to describe this symmetry breaking, degenerate Hamiltonian systems and general connections.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remarkable progress in neuro-oncology due to increased utilization of advanced imaging in clinical practice continues to accelerate in recent years. Refinements in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) technology, and the addition of newer anatomical, functional, and metabolic imaging methods, such as MRS, fMRI, diffusion MRI, and DTI MRI have allowed brain tumor patients to be diagnosed much earlier and to be followed more carefully during treatment. With treatment approaches and the field of neuro-oncology neuroimaging changing rapidly, this second edition of the Handbook of Neuro-Oncology Neuroimaging is so relevant to those in the field, providing a single-source, comprehensive, reference handbook of the most up-to-date clinical and technical information regarding the application of neuro-Imaging techniques to brain tumor and neuro-oncology patients. This new volume will have updates on all of the material from the first edition, and in addition will feature several new important chapters covering diverse topics such as advanced imaging techniques in radiation therapy, therapeutic treatment fields, response assessment in clinical trials, surgical planning of neoplastic disease of the spine, and more. It will also serve as a resource of background information to neuroimaging researchers and basic scientists with an interest in brain tumors and neuro-oncology. - Provides a background to translational research and the use of brain imaging for brain tumors - Contains critical discussions on the potential and limitations of neuroimaging as a translational tool for the diagnosis and treatment of brain tumor and neuro-oncology patients - Presents an up-to-date reference on advanced imaging technologies, including computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and positron emission tomography (PET), as well as the recent refinements in these techniques
