Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the Acts of the Apostles, Vol. 2 The church is here seen in a new and important aspect as a missionary church. Hitherto Christianity had been pro pagated in a measure by informal efforts and casual occur rences; the persecution at Jerusalem having given rise to the dispersion of the Christians, and the diflusion of their opinions. But now the church at Antioch plans measures and makes regular efforts to extend the gospel among the heathen. Paul and Barnabas are sent forth as the first Christian missionaries - the forerunners of that noble band of Christian heroes who sacrifice everything in order to difiuse the unsearchable riches of Christ among the Gentiles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary on the Acts of the Apostles I received your Commentary on the Acts of the Apostles which you were pleased to send me, and give you a thousand thanks for the share which you are thus so kind as to afford me in your remembrance, which I have entertained, not only with all due acknowledgment, but also with much joy, as coming from a person who is and ever shall be very dear to me, and for whom I have a most particular esteem. I have perused your Commentary, though it came but lately to my hands, and I have found in it, as in all your other works, the marks of a copious reading, abundance of sense, right reason, and a just and exact understanding; and I do not doubt but that this Commentary will be kindly received by the learned, and prove very useful to all those who apply themselves to understand the Scriptures. This shows you, Sir, not to be idle, and that vou manage well the talents God has been pleased to bestow upon you. The public will be very much obliged to you, if you continue, as I hepe you will, and which I take the freedom to exhort you to.do, to make similar presents. For my own part, I find in it a great edification, and wish with all my heart, it lay in my power to manifest it to you by effectual services. I beseech you to be persuaded of this truth, and that you would preserve me the honour of your friendship, which I shall ever look upon as very much to my advantage. I take my leave, praying God he would continue to pour out upon you his holy benedictions: assuring you that I am, Sir, Your most humble and most obedient servant, claude. Paris, April 15, 1684. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Origins of Christianity, Vol. 3 The fifteen or sixteen years of religious history comprised in this volume in'the embryonic age of Christianity, are the years with which we are best acquainted. Jesus and the primitive Church at Jerusalem re semble the images of a far-off paradise, lost in a mysterious mist. On the other hand, the arrival of St Paul at Rome, in consequence of the step the Author of the Acts has taken in closing at that juncture his narrative, marks in the history of Christian origins the commencement of a profound darkness into which the bloody glare of the barbarous feasts of Nero, and the thunders of the Apocalypse, cast only a few gleams. In particular, the death of the Apostles is enveloped in an impenetrable obscurity. On the contrary, the era of the missions of St Paul, especially of the second mission and the third, is known to us through documents of the greatest value. The Acts, till then so legendary, become suddenly quite authentic; the last chapters, com. Posed in part of the narrative of an eye-witness, are the sole complete historical writings which we have of the early times of Christianity. In fine, those years, through a privilege very rare in similar circum stances, provide us with documents, the dates of which are absolutely authentic, and a series of letters, the most important of which have withstood all the tests of criticism, and which have never been sub jected to interpolations. In the introduction to the preceding volume, we have made an ex amination of the Book of Acts. We must now discuss seriatim the different epistles which bear the name of St Paul. The Apostle informs us himself, that even during his lifetime there were in circulation in his name several spurious letters, and he often took precautions to prevent frauds. We are, therefore, only carrying out his intentions in subject ing the writings which have been put forth as his to a rigorous censorship. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teachers' Commentary on the Acts of the Apostles The work is critical, but in results rather than in processes. Great pains are taken to get at the exact meaning both of words and events. Whatever light the Higher Criticism can throw upon these is utilized, to the best of our ability, for those who desire a brief but comprehensive view of the best scholarship. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on the Acts of the Apostles It would be superfluous to pursue this testimony farther. It may be proper to add that no trace of any Opposition to it or dissent from it has come down to us from the first ages Of the church. Some of the early heretical sects, it is true, as the Marcionites, Manicheans, Severians, rejected the religious authority of the Acts but as they did this because it contradicted their peculiar views, and as they admitted without question the source from which their Opponents claimed to receive it, their rejection Of the book, under such circumstances, becomes a conclusive testimony to its genuineness. In the second place, the relation in which the Acts of the Apostles stands to the Gospel which is ascribed to Luke proves that the author of the two productions must be the same individual. The writer introduces his work as a continuation or second part of a previous history, and dedicates it to a certain Theophilus, who can be no other than the person for whose special information the Gospel was written. As to the iden tity of the writer of the Acts with the writer Of the Gospel attributed to Luke, no well founded question has been, or can be, raised. Consequently, the entire mass Of testi mony which proves that Luke the Evangelist wrote the Gospel which bears his name proves with equal force that he wrote also the Acts Of the Apostles. Thus the Acts may be traced up to Luke through two independent series of witnesses. And it may be confidently asserted that, unless the combined historical evidence from this twofold source be admitted as conclusive in support of Luke's claim to the authorship of the Acts, there is then no ancient book in the world the author of which can ever be asoer tained by us. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Contents and Origin of the Acts of the Apostles, Vol. 1: Critically Investigated The present work of Professor Zeller is so well known as to need no introduction. Following out the hints of Schnecken-burger, the importance of which had been apprehended by Baur and Schwegler, the distinguished author wrote a series of elaborate articles in the Tubingen Journal. These were subsequently revised, for the purpose of a separate work. The publication thence resulting is an epoch-making one, evincing the highest critical ability, and propounding a tendency which actuated the writer of the Acts, in harmony with the leading opinions of the Tubingen School. The impossibility of reconciling the Apostle Paul's statements and conduct, as seen in his Epistles, with those in the Acts, and the conciliatory motive which prompted and moulded the latter, are set forth with great skill. As the work was published in 1854, it has been thought desirable to give a specimen of the later literature on the same book of the New Testament, for which purpose Overbeck's Introduction to his edition of De Welte's Commentary has been selected. That the views of Zeller are substantially correct can hardly be doubted, though some details are perhaps pushed to an extreme.
