And prettier 'n ever. How are you, anyway! She laughed, and I noted that her lips were red, her teeth white and even, and that I was enchained by her eyes. They were like those one dreams of sometimes - eyes that are not quite plain in their message, but deep, and soft, and intelligent. Hers were tempered by some suggestion of lasting sadness, and I wondered if it had anything to do with the wreck of a man on the bank above, still sifting pebbles. I was to have this answered by Hillyer's introduction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A century ago, Treadwell, Alaska, was a featured stop on steamship cruises, a rich, up-to-date town that was the most prominent and proud in all Alaska. Its wealth, however, was founded on the remarkably productive gold mines on Douglas Island, and when those caved in and flooded in the early decades of the twentieth century, Treadwell sank into relative obscurity. Treadwell Gold presents first-person accounts from the sons and daughters of the miners, machinists, hoist operators, and superintendents who together dug and blasted the gold that made Treadwell rich. Alongside these stories are vintage photos that capture both the industrial vigor of the mines and the daily lives that made up Treadwell society. The book will fascinate anyone interested in Alaskan history or the romance of gold mining’s past.

Book excerpt: Shortly after the sacking of Mexico by the Spaniards, the leaders of New Spain heard many rumors of the riches existing in the vast area north of Mexico. In both 1540 and 1599, the viceroy of Mexico formed very large armies to march to the north and find and loot the wealth from areas reputed to being very rich. Francisco Coronado headed the first expedition, but in Cibola and Quivira found the Indians to be very poor and living in skin lodges. Coronado returned to Mexico in great disgrace. Despite the Coronado failures, the Spanish leaders still believed that Quivira possessed rich gold mines. They commissioned Juan de Onaté to lead another expensive expedition to investigate the area. Upon reaching Quivira, Onaté met the same fate as Coronado. He found no gold and had to retreat in ignominious defeat. In spite of the failings of Onaté, the men of his expedition had a great interplay with the Indians of Quivira. On one occasion, they helped defend the Pawnee Indians from the Comanche tribe. So great was the Spaniard quest for gold, that 180 years after Coronado, the Spaniards under Don Pedro de Villasur again invaded Quivira. At this late date under the influence of the French, the Oto and Pawnee attacked the Spaniards along the Platte River and decimated their army. This defeat then spelled the end of the Spanish power on the Great Plains.

Book excerpt: Since the signing of the Laramie Treaty six years earlier, the tribes of the Plains have practised their nomadic lifestyle within the boundaries of the lands set aside for their use. The dwindling herds of buffalo and deer which provide the staple requirements of their existence are a growing source of discontent but while the Americans, the wasicun, stay out of the tribal lands the tenuous peace is maintained. One word, however, uttered at a riverside meeting with 'Yellowstone' Kelly, raises Wes Gray's concern that that peace might soon be broken, that white men might breech the borders of the Great Sioux Reservation and bring with them the turmoil of war. The object of their trespass, to gain that for which men will risk all. Gold.
