Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Maine Woods is classic Thoreau: a personal story of exterior and interior discoveries in a natural setting-all conveyed in taut, masterly prose. Thoreau's evocative renderings of the life of the primitive forest-its mountains, waterways, fauna, flora, and inhabitants-are timeless and valuable on their own. But his impassioned protest against the despoilment of nature in the name of commerce and sport, which even by the 1850s threatened to deprive Americans of the "tonic of wildness," makes The Maine Woods an especially vital book for our own time. The Maine Woods was written as three essays. If he had lived longer, Thoreau might have revised them into a more cohesive whole, but he never had the time to do this. The book describes trips over an eleven year period, and Thoreau's work on these essays spanned 15 years. "One of the most coniferous-pungent books in the English language, a book which a century later remains one of the the best written on the woods of Maine." - Mary P. Sherwood "An effective bosky and moosey picture of the deepest wilderness Thoreau was ever to explore. If Cape Cod tastes of salt, The Maine Woods smells of hemlock and balsam." - Walter Harding Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) was an American essayist, poet, philosopher, abolitionist, naturalist, tax resister, development critic, surveyor, and historian. A leading transcendentalist, [2] Thoreau is best known for his book Walden, a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings, and his essay "Civil Disobedience" (originally published as "Resistance to Civil Government"), an argument for disobedience to an unjust state.

Originally published in 1864, and published now with a new introduction by Paul Theroux, this volume is a powerful telling of those journeys through a rugged and largely unspoiled land. It presents Thoreau's fullest account of the wilderness. The Maine Woods is classic Thoreau: a personal story of exterior and interior discoveries in a natural setting--all conveyed in taut, masterly prose. Book excerpt: - Henry David Thoreau wrote four full-length works, collected here for the first time in a single digital volume. Subtly interweaving natural observation, personal experience, and historical lore, they reveal his brilliance not only as a writer, but as a naturalist, scholar, historian, poet, and philosopher.- "A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers" (1849) is based on a boat trip taken with his brother from Concord, Massachusetts to Concord, New Hampshire.- "Walden," (1854) one of America's greatest books, is at once a personal declaration of independence, social experiment, voyage of spiritual discovery, manual of self-reliance, and masterpiece of style.- "The Maine Woods" (1864) combines close observation of the unexplored Maine wilderness with a far-sighted plea for conservation.- "Cape Cod" (1865) is a brilliant and unsentimental account of survival on a barren peninsula in the face of hostile elements, historical change, and natural decay.- This meticulous edition from Heritage Publishing is a faithful reproduction of the original texts.

This book was released on 2023-11-26 with total page 1087 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers" is a narrative of a 2 week boat trip from Concord, Massachusetts, down the Concord River to the Middlesex Canal, to the Merrimack River, up to Concord, New Hampshire, and back, taken by Thoreau and his brother John. It covers diverse topics such as religion, poetry, and history, which Thoreau relates to his own life experiences. "Walden" details Thoreau's experiences over the course of two years, two months, and two days in a cabin he built in the woods near Walden Pond, Massachusetts. The book is a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings. "The Maine Woods" is a collection of accounts of 3 different trips Thoreau took to wilds of Maine, unified by his increasing fascination with the primitive world and the "wild," both environmental and psychological. "Cape Cod" is an account based on a few trips Thoreau took to Cape Cod. It depicts a journey through the dismal, deserted, unpopulated wasteland that was Cape Cod in the early 1850s, describing both the landscape and the rugged people who lived in it. "A Yankee in Canada" is an excursion book about Thoreau's journey to the region of Montréal and Québec in the Fall of 1850. "Canoeing" in the Wilderness is the record of the canoe trip through Main Woods. It is vast tract of almost virgin woodland, peopled only with a few loggers and pioneer farmers, Indians, and wild animals. Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) was an American essayist, poet, philosopher, abolitionist, naturalist, surveyor, and historian. A leading transcendentalist, Thoreau is best known for his book Walden, a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings, and his essay Civil Disobedience, an argument for disobedience to an unjust state.
