Book excerpt: 31 meditations from the founder of Desiring God that will connect you to a fresh understanding of God and renew your faith. "You do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away" (James 4:14). Living knowing that your life is a vapor is different than just living. Things here are passing away. You’ve got to hold on to what will stand. Savor what matters. This collection of thirty-one articles is full of that heart-longing after Christ that distinguishes Piper’s preaching ministry. You will feel as though you have stumbled into a garden as you enter these pages. The Scripture cuts, Christ is exalted in God, and we worship Him. Life Is Short. Eternity Is Long. Live Like It. You will exist forever. You and God are both in the universe to stay—either as friends on His terms, or enemies on yours—which it will be is proven in this life. And this life is a vapor. Two seconds, and we will be gone. In these thirty-one meditations, John Piper will connect you to a fresh understanding of God and a renewed relationship with Him. You’ll find your faith stirred to make every day count for Christ when you consider life as a vapor. Story Behind the Book Time is precious. We are fragile. Life is short. Eternity is long. Every minute counts. Oh, to be a faithful steward of the breath God has given me. Three texts resound in my ears: “Redeem the time” (Ephesians 5:16 ); “It is required of stewards that one be found trustworthy” (1 Corinthians 4:2); “His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored even more than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God with me” (1 Corinthians 15:10 ). Surely God means for our minutes on earth to count for something significant. Paul said, “In the day of Christ I will have reason to glory because I did not run in vain nor toil in vain” (Philippians 2:16). In the same way, I have good hope from the Lord that my “labor is not in vain in the Lord” (1 Corinthians 15:58 ).

Book excerpt: Finding hope when faced with the devastating loss of your most precious dreams. At 20 weeks pregnant, Lindsey Dennis and her husband were told the child she was carrying would not live due to a fatal diagnosis. Later, in another stunning blow, they were told the same news with her second pregnancy. They chose to celebrate both lives alongside a community, both local and online, of hundreds of thousands as she carried each child to term only to bury them 14 months apart from each other. Through the crushing of their hopes and dreams, they came to know the kind of resurrection hope that can rise from the grave. This experience of infant loss revealed to Dennis how sorrow and suffering are instruments in the hands of God to forge in us a greater joy and hope than one can ever know. This kind of joy can only be discovered when we walk through the deep pain of burying our most precious dreams. Buried Dreams offers an uplifting perspective, sharing how devastating loss of personal dreams can give way to unimaginable hope and how death can give way to life. Framing her own story of staggering loss and soaring hope with biblical perspective, Dennis highlights that we can never plan for the unexpected turns of this life that sometimes lead to great personal suffering, but we can reach for the One who is there with us in the loss. Product Features: Shares how unrealized dreams can give way to unimaginable hope. Shows how sorrow and suffering are instruments in the hands of God. Rekindles hope for those who have experienced loss.

Book excerpt: Why modern man is more dangerous than wild animals even after higher education & elite status? Why are diseases uncontrolled and deaths are vital despite advanced medical science? Why do bad things happen to good people and vice versa despite omnipotent law of natural justice? These are some of the questions which often arise in our mind sooner or later. We often ponder upon these painful questions, but never get absolute solution. In light of the wisdom of Bhagavad Gita, the author has endeavored to uncover the root cause of the sufferings for a viable vedic solution through an in depth analysis of contemporary challenges of present society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gospel of John occupies a special place in the Bible because it focuses on life. Its writer, the apostle John, had a specific burden related to life and building, and his ministry was fully focused on these two matters. His Gospel reveals that God is manifested as the Word and becomes the Spirit to enter into us in order to be our life, but this marvelous fact is not the goal; it is a procedure to achieve an ultimate goal. The Gospel of John says that the Word, who is God, became flesh and tabernacled among us. Life is the procedure, and the tabernacle is the goal. God came to be our life so that He might tabernacle in us and among us, that we might receive Him as life for the building up of the house of God.

Its intensely personal passages picture our own struggles, defeats, and victories; its instruction includes numerous principles and practices for godly worship, service, and day-to-day living. The Psalms high praises of Almighty God ring through many of our beloved hymns and songs. Psalms historical scope ranges from the days of creation through prophecies of the Messiah's life, death, resurrection, and coming again. Martin Luther called Psalms a little Bible, and indeed it is. The LORD My Shepherd captures these and many more pertinent subjects in a devotional topical format. It's for understanding and applying the Psalms in your own life and worship. Come, Magnify the LORD with me!

Book excerpt: Who Are You, Lord?Footpaths beyond a Street Called Straight roots its message in the life-altering moment when Saul, the Pharisee and persecutor of Christians, encountered the risen Lord and found his life set on a new path of service to God. Author Mark A. Luther entwines the Bibles witness to the power of God to change lives with his personal story of redirection from addiction to discipleship. Along the way, he has crafted a testimony that opens the Scriptures, tells his own story, and invites the reader to discover how to ask the question of identity. Who Are You, Lord? reveals and describes the key markers of the life of discipleship: humility, surrender, submission, forgiveness, freedom, obedience, trust, and prayer. It also addresses a variety of themes of the Christian life: gifts, promises, and provision; trials and testing; comfort and joy; warfare and the enemy; sin and mercy; the Word and the Spirit; and worship and gifting. By immersing yourself in the rich treasures of the Scriptures and the moving narrative of the authors spiritual journey contained in the pages of Who Are You, Lord?Footpaths beyond a Street Called Straight, you will find your own life of faith strengthened and your own spirit attuned to ask the questionWho are you, Lord?and to listen for him to answer. KIRKUS REVIEW Debut author Mark A. Luther offers a memoir thats also a collection of meditations on popular Christian topics. As the author explains in the introduction, I am now, at age forty-five, a man who loves God above all else, because I am above all else loved by him. In the pages that follow, he tells of his time as a raging alcoholic and his eventual redemption through steady prayer and belief. He divides his sentiments into chapters with titles such as Love, Forgiveness, and Trust, incorporating frequent biblical quotes and prayers as well as the sentiments of other writers, such as C.S. Lewis and T.S. Eliot. The book overflows with earnest guidance for the weary soul, aiming toward a simplicity backed by personal experience. The author asserts what it means to be Christian quite clearly: living a life spent pursuing intimate, daily fellowship with Jesus Christ. Addressing whether human suffering is an expression of Gods anger, he assures readers that Trouble and hard times are not God punishing us. Love is paramount, he says: Get out in the world and go love somebody; be the hands and feet of Jesus, he urges, later noting that Nobody is beyond Gods desire to love or his ability to use them. For instance, a recovering-alcoholic friend found him drinking in his car when he should have been at work, moments like that illuminate this unique tale. Theauthor avoids any sort of holier-than-thou tone in this book, allowing it to offer a truly inspiring message. If turning to prayer could work for a man who experienced such a series of Rock Bottom moments, readers may think, perhaps it could work for anyone. A heartfelt message about one mans embrace of Christianity.

Book excerpt: The Collected Works of Witness Lee, 1963, volume 4, contains the messages and fellowship given by Brother Witness Lee from September 4 through December 31, 1963. In the first part of September Brother Lee spent a few days ministering to the saints in Las Vegas, Nevada. There are indications that he also passed through Albuquerque, New Mexico, for a few days afterward; however, there is no record of his speaking during that time. On the weekend of September 20 and 21 he ministered to the saints in Tyler, Texas, and toward the end of the month he traveled to New York City, where he ministered for more than two weeks. In the month of November Brother Lee returned to Texas for a week to release messages in Tyler and Dallas. The following weekend he stopped briefly in Los Angeles and then traveled up the West Coast to Sacramento and San Francisco, California, giving weeklong conferences in both cities. In December Brother Lee again returned to Los Angeles, where he ministered until the end of the year, sometimes speaking two or three times a day. The contents of this volume are divided into twelve sections, as follows: 1. Four messages given in Las Vegas on September 4 through 7. These messages were published under the title Contacting the Lord, Being Filled in Spirit, and Having Proper Christian Meetings for the Accomplishment of God's Eternal Purpose. There are indications, but no solid evidence, that the last message was given in Albuquerque, New Mexico. 2. Three messages given at a conference in Tyler on September 20 and 21. These messages are included in this volume under the title Experiencing Christ as Life for Our Transformation into His Image. Records indicate that originally four messages were given, but the last two, which were given on the same day and at the same location, were combined into one message. 3. Four messages given at a conference in New York City from September 29 through October 6. These messages are included in this volume under the title The Practical Way to Fulfill God's Eternal Purpose. 4. Four messages given at a conference in New York City on October 11 through 13. These messages were published under the title The Exercise of Our Spirit for the Release of the Spirit. 5. A series of twelve messages given in the Tyler and Dallas area on November 7 through 15. These messages are included in this volume under the title Being Transformed for the Practice of the Church Life. 6. Three messages given in Tyler at various times during the month of November. These messages are included in this volume under the title The Fulfillment of God's Purpose and the Defeat of God's Enemy. 7. Six messages given at a conference in Sacramento on November 22 through 25. These messages were published under the title Experiencing Christ as the Inner Life. 8. Eleven messages given in San Francisco from November 28 through December 1. These messages were published under the title The Relationship of God with Man in God's New Creation. 9. Messages given on two Lord's Days, November 17 and December 15, in Los Angeles. These messages are included in this volume under the title Lord's Day Messages in Los Angeles. The second message was divided into two parts. 10. Three messages constructed from personal notes of Brother Lee's fellowship with the leading ones on December 14 and 20 in Los Angeles. These messages are included in this volume under the title Fellowship with the Leading Ones. 11. Sixteen messages given at a conference in Los Angeles on December 22 through 31. These messages were published under the title The Life and Way for the Practice of the Church Life. 12. One message given at a meeting in Los Angeles on December 28. This message is included in this volume under the section title Fellowship concerning the Body of Christ. There are indications that this message was one in a series of informal talks that Brother Lee gave during the conference held on December 22 through 31. Records of the other talks were not available for publication.
