Was ist jedoch, wenn man die Chance erhält, einen Fehler in der Vergangenheit wieder gut zu machen und etwas zu ändern? Mit dieser Fragestellung setzt sich Stephen King in seinem neuen Roman Der Anschlag auseinander. Der Roman befasst sich mit einem für King untypischen Genre, denn im Zentrum des Werkes steht eine kontrafaktische Geschichte, in der das Attentat auf John F. Kennedy im Jahre 1963 verhindert werden soll, in der Annahme, dass infolgedessen durch das Weiterleben des Präsidenten der weitere Verlauf der Geschichte bis zur Gegenwart des Jahres 2011 positiv verändert werden würde. Dass das Intervenieren in die Vergangenheit eine Reihe von unvorhersehbaren negativen Konsequenzen zur Folge hat, auch wenn sich zum Ziel gesetzt wurde, historische Momente zu vereiteln, die einen dunklen Schatten auf die Menschheit geworfen haben und möglicherweise eine Unmenge an Menschenleben gefordert haben, ist die These der nun folgenden wissenschaftlichen Arbeit. Warum selbst eine kleine Veränderung der Historie eine Reihe von überwiegend negativen Auswirkungen mit sich bringt, und was für eine Rolle die Vergangenheit selbst bei kontrafaktischen Geschichten spielt, wird ebenfalls bearbeitet. Seit Jahrzehnten begeistern kontrafaktische Geschichten über das Töten bekannter Personen oder das Stoppen von Attentäter die Leser. Der Schwerpunkt liegt meistens auf den Geschehnissen des Ersten und Zweiten Weltkrieges. Kings Idee, das Leben des Präsidenten John F. Kennedy zu retten, der im Jahre 1963 erschossen wurde, fällt hierbei jedoch aus dem Rahmen. Was sich der Protagonist davon erhofft, was für positive Auswirkungen es haben kann, Kennedy zu retten und wieso er sich für Kennedy entschieden hat, ist Bestandteil dieser Arbeit. Wieso er sich jedoch einen im Vergleich zur gesamten Weltgeschichte eher unscheinbaren Moment der Historie auserwählt hat und worauf sich die erwarteten positiven Konsequenzen des Protagonisten stützen, ist ebenfalls signifikant zu betrachten. Warum die Vergangenheit letztendlich ruhen sollte und nicht verändert werden will, wird in den nun folgenden Seiten erarbeitet.
