Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Trier, course: Der englische Schauerroman, 13 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Stephen King is one of the most published contemporary authors. He has written more than 50 novels and movie scripts, some of them under the pseudonym of Richard Bachmann. His stories deal with the supernatural, with aliens or the abysses of the human mind. Due to his topics, his books are often regarded as trivial literature by many of his readers and also by people who have never read a single one of his books and who only judge him by his name. But what these critics seem to miss is the fact that Stephen King has adapted many themes and motifs from highly regarded authors of classic Gothic fiction, such as Horace Walpole, Ann Radcliffe and Bram Stoker, to mention just a few. In each of Stephen King’s books, the reader can identify traces of classic Gothic fiction, although the topics and settings are normally adapted to modern times. Stephen King says of himself that ‘most of my [Stephen King’s] books have been derivative to some extent...’ (Bloom, p.96), which is not surprising regarding his educational background: After studying English at the University of Maine, Stephen King worked as a high school teacher, although he did not get too much teaching practice due to the commercial success of his books. Therefore, it is not very surprising that Stephen King uses the sources he has become acquainted with during his studies. He uses the motifs of Gothic novels in different ways and in many of his books. In fact, he says that ‘what I [Stephen King] try to do...is to pour new wine from old bottles’ (Bloom, p.96). What I would like to do in this term paper is to show some of the Gothic motifs Stephen King uses in his books and in what way he uses them. For this purpose, I have chosen two novels from Stephen King’s earlier working period: Salem’s Lot and The Shining. But before actually beginning the comparison between Stephen King’s books and classic Gothic novels I will give an overview over the characteristic features of Gothic writing in order to enable the reader to identify the tradition Stephen King’s writing stands in.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject Literature - Comparative Literature, grade: 10,0, Justus-Liebig-University Giessen, language: English, abstract: It may seem questionable to analyze the depiction of women in two novels, both classified as completely different genres from different time spans – “Jane Eyre” as the so-called “Bildungsroman” in England 1847 in contrast to “Christine” published in the USA 1983. Yet there are communalities concerning their writing elements that both utilize. They have overlaps with the Gothic genre, using Gothic Fiction elements in their novels and in consequence, offer a great opportunity to become objects of investigations for this term paper. Initially, I will give a brief overview on the subject matter of females being depicted in Gothic fiction. Then “Jane Eyre” will be put into context by shortly elaborating the women’s role in the Victorian Age to consider the historical and socio-economic aspects of the novel. Afterwards, I will conduct the text analysis and in the second main part I will work with the same structure on “Christine”. In the end, I intend to prove in the conclusion that it is clear as bell how the two authors’ depiction of women differ although they both write Gothic novels.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,0, University of Constance, course: (Re-)Writing Gender in Contemporary Native North American Literature, language: English, abstract: In reading Thomas King's novel Green Grass, Running Water we inevitably come across many references to biblical names and stories. Intertextuality is a major technique in the novel and especially the mythical stories are explicitly interwoven with hints to the Bible. The author deals with canonical texts as well as with Indian myths and, as we're going to see later, also with historical events etc. He takes up names and parts of the pre-text and re-writes them. "It is essential to note, however, that these pre-texts are not opposed to each other as part of a binary structure. Rather they interact with one another and form something new each time they are told"1. Besides the many direct and indirect references, there are also several correspondences between the structure of Green Grass, Running Water and the Bible, e.g. the four stories told by the four old Indians can be seen as a parallel to the four gospels in the New Testament2. In the following I am going to focus on explicit references in the four mythical stories that develop in the conversation of the trickster Coyote and a first person narrator. The main part of this analysis is the comparison between the biblical pre-texts and King's re-writing. As the actual parallels are very few there has to be some other idea behind these intertextual devices. It is probably more about history and hierarchy than about the pure pre-text.
