Book excerpt: Sinister Wisdom 123: A Tribute to Conditions reaches back forty-three years to the beginnings of Conditions, "a [feminist] magazine of writing for women with an emphasis on writing by lesbians," founded by Elly Bulkin, Jan Clausen, Irena Klepfisz, and Rima Shore in 1977, a year later than the founding of Sinister Wisdom. So, we feel it fitting that Sinister Wisdom should produce this special issue to honor one of the signal publications of the late Women in Print Movement, a time of prodigious writing, organizing, and creating when women "seized the time" and the means for our own revolution in letters. This special issue pays tribute to Conditions as one of a number of US feminist publications that asserted, in the words of Jaime Harker and Cecilia Konchar Farr, for thirteen years that "books could be revolutionary, that language could remake the world, and that writing mattered in a profound way."In the first half of the issue, members of the Conditions editorial collectives write their reflections about the journal. In the second half of the issue, seventeen mixed-generation writers and artists respond to one of the seventeen issues of Conditions. Writers took whatever creative bent struck their queer forms and fantasies bringing to the issue a collage of autobiography, theorizing, fiction-writing, poetry, criticism, and straight-up essay.

Book excerpt: Candlewick relaunches a modern classic for this generation with a beautifully illustrated edition. Heather’s favorite number is two. She has two arms, two legs, and two pets. And she also has two mommies. When Heather goes to school for the first time, someone asks her about her daddy, but Heather doesn’t have a daddy. Then something interesting happens. When Heather and her classmates all draw pictures of their families, not one drawing is the same. It doesn’t matter who makes up a family, the teacher says, because “the most important thing about a family is that all the people in it love one another.” This delightful edition for a new generation of young readers features fresh illustrations by Laura Cornell and an updated story by Lesléa Newman.

Book excerpt: "Much of the scholarship published on gay writers in the American South has focused on men, eliding the vibrant history of lesbian authorship and print culture. In The lesbian South, Jamie Harker explores the literature of lesbian-feminist writers, feminist print culture, presses, and bookstores in the post-1960s American South. Harker argues that lesbian presses and bookstores enabled the development of feminist reading and writing communities. These communities both challenged and nurtured lesbian writers, while also encouraging a feminist-inspired racial activism and individual autonomy"--

Book excerpt: This book explores the meanings and experiences of home among a group of lesbians who over the past five decades have sought to create alternative intimate and public living spaces. The protagonists who enact the ethnographic narrative are a small group of older lesbians, mainly feminist activists, residing in the metropolis of London. The meaning of home and domestic space emerges from unique life histories informed by the wider social and political context, and moves from the earliest memories of their childhood kitchens to their contemporary domestic lives. Leaping from the radical lesbian feminist collectives and squats of the 1980s to the ordinariness of home life, the kitchen emerged as a tangle of cultural norms, customs, duties, ideas, aspirations, expectations, and values that tells us about the thinking process and behaviour of this specific group of older lesbians. In this context, the kitchen brings out the experiences of social inequalities experienced by these older lesbians, mainly brought out by the hegemonic institution of heteronormativity and patriarchy. This ethnography will be of interest to students and scholars across a range of disciplines in anthropology, sociology, geography and feminism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lesbian Liberation Movement is both a movement that encompasses liberating a sexual practice from stigmatization and a political movement challenging the dual oppression of women by the patriarchy's assumption of male supremacy and heterosexuality. Over the years, much has been written on homosexuality and the Gay Liberation Movement, yet much of the focus has been on male homosexuals, especially male homosexual activity and the politics that activity raises. The A to Z of the Lesbian Liberation Movement: Still the Rage is a comprehensive overview and resource guide for one of the most invisible social political movements: the Lesbian Liberation Movement. This book helps to make the still-active movement visible_the history, successes, setbacks, controversies, and issues. This book is a good resource for those studying this social political movement, containing a chronology, contextual overview, dictionary entries that cover persons, laws, terminology, issues, and countries, and an extensive bibliography of primary resources and current work.

Book excerpt: First Digital Edition; Grier Rating: A*** This is the true-life story of what happens when scores of young girls live intimately together in a French military barracks. Many of these girls, utterly innocent and inexperienced, meet other women who have lived every type of existence. Their problems, their temptations, their fights and failures are those faced by all women who are forced to live together during dangerous and stressful times. The girls who chose Tereska Torres, the author, as their confidante poured out to her their most intimate feelings, their secret thoughts. With all of its revelations and tenderness, Women’s Barracks is an important book because it tells a story that had never been truly told before--the story of women in war. It also has the special distinction of being the first “lesbian pulp” novel ever published and became a record-breaking bestseller. This autobiographical novel takes place in London, England during World War II. The terror of the V-1 and V-2 rocket bombings, and the resulting fires and destruction, are an unknown experience to most readers. The women enduring these events were not even 20 years old when they first arrived. Many volunteered to be there. They were French, or of French heritage, and wanted to be part of the effort to help protect France from invasion by the Nazis. Throughout it all, passions flare, long-standing taboos are tossed to the wind, and passionate relationships are begun between older, more experienced butch officers and the young, inexperienced femme girls under their charge. In her telling of these women’s stories, Torres remains nonjudgmental of the lesbian relationships these women explored. Perhaps as a result, Women’s Barracks was banned in several states for being obscene. The House Select Committee on Current Pornographic Materials denounced the book in 1952 as an illustration of how the newly emerging paperback industry was breeding and promoting moral depravity. By today’s standards, of course, the book is somewhat tame; however, the eroticism and honesty with which Torres writes immerses the reader in the love, tenderness, loyalty and passion that women share with each other.
