Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lepidoptera of Ceylon At the commencement of the year 1844, Sir William H. Gregory, then Governor of Ceylon, having had his attention called by Dr. Thwaites, the Director of the Botanical Garden at Peradeniya, to the accuracy and beauty of the botanical drawings made by his native draftsman, Mr. W. de Alwis, permission was given, on the suggestion of Dr. Thwaites, that this draftsman might be engaged in copying from nature the Lepidopterous Insects of the Island, in which subject Dr. Thwaites took great interest. Under his supervision these drawings were made, from specimens chiefly collected by him. Mr. Geo. de Alwis, brother of Mr. W., also having shown much talent, Sir Wm. Gregory employed him at his own expense in copying the drawings already made and in preparing fresh ones, and it is from these copies, which were lent for the purpose by Sir Wm. Gregory, as well as from natural specimens, that the figures on the plates of this work are taken. This series of drawings of the Lepidopterous Insects of Ceylon - representing about 360 species, of which about 250 are figured in their various stages of larva, pupa, and imago - was placed in the Authors hands, together with the collection of specimens formed by Sir Wm. Gregory, for the purpose of being arranged and named. This collection of drawings was subsequently exhibited at a Meeting of the Entomological Society of London, held March 6th, 1878, and was considered to be such a valuable contribution to Eastern Entomology that the following resolution was proposed by the President in the chair and passed, viz.: "It was hoped that an application to the Ceylon Government for their publication would be successful." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On a Collection of Sierra Leone Lepidoptera The Lepidoptera which are catalogued and described in the following pages were collected by me during a tour of service of thirteen months' duration at Sierra Leone, West Africa, in the years 1891-92. With few exceptions their habitat was the rocky peninsula of Sierra Leone, which has an area of some twenty square miles. It is very hilly, some of the hills rising to a height of from 3000 to 4000 feet. The immediately surrounding country is flat and swampy, and, so far as I had an opportunity of judging, is poor in Lepidoptera. Owing probably to its elevation, Sierra Leone is very rich in representatives of the genus Charaxes. In the limited time at my disposal I obtained eighteen species - nineteen, including Pallet, Charaxes) varanes - with both sexes in fifteen of these. In consequence of my having lost the notes I made at the time on the natural habits of the insects collected, the observations which I am enabled to make must necessarily be brief, fragmentary, and quoted from memory. They may be divided roughly into two classes: the first comprising those which have remained in aristocratic solitude, and are essentially sylvan in their habits; the second class, those which seem to prefer the vicinity of man and his habitations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Lepidoptera of America Male and Female. Upperside, much the same as in Grapta faunus, Edwards; the preapical oblique dark brown costal band of the primaries is constantly more diffuse, and the succeeding yellowish marks more restricted, than in its congener. Usually there is a third fainter black spot on the interspace above first median nervule. On the secondaries, the terminal dark band is narrower than in G. faunus, and the sub-terminal, interspaceal, yellow-fulvous marks, while deeper in color, are brought nearer to the external margin; within these, the dark color is less intense and shades more rapidly to brownish, than in its congener. All the exserted portions of the external margins on both wings are narrower; this is especially perceivable when comparing the "tails" of the secondaries of the two species together. Underside, paler than in G. faunus, and affords ready distinguishing characters. Basally, the wings are of a rich dark clear brown, marbled with paler shadings nearer the body, and with darker lines inclosing brown elongated patches. Outside of the brown space is a broad whitish band, distinctly covered with fine, short, wavy, transverse, disconnected, brown striae, and shading into the dark wood-brown strigose terminal shade. The discal mark of the secondaries is a white L, entirely surrounded by the dark brown scales of the basal shade. Body and legs much as in G. faunus; tarsi, whitish, paler; antennae notably shorter than in its ally. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
