Book excerpt: The Johannine Tradition in Late Antique and Medieval Poetry' proposes to examine the impact of the Gospel of John, which is fundamental from the point of view of the history of Christian doctrines, on ancient poetic production, with some forays into the Middle Ages. The critical literature on these aspects is particularly abundant, but hitherto an overall view of the presence and importance of the Johannine tradition in the evolution of Christian poetry was lacking. Based on the Strasbourg colloquium that took place on 16-17 September 2021, the present volume aims to fill this gap, with contributions highlighting not an episodic presence of Johannine texts in poetic compositions, but a structuring function in the definition of the poetic choices of the various authors. The focus of attention could therefore only be on the genre of biblical rewritings, which derive their particular significance from their organic attempt to ?remake? the biblical text in accordance with very precise cultural objectives and the expectations of a select audience.0.

Book excerpt: In The Jeweled Style, Michael Roberts offers a new approach to the Latin poetry of late antiquity, one centering on an aesthetic quality common to both the literature and the art of the period--the polychrome patterning of words and phrases or of colors and shapes. In Roberts's view, the writer or artist of this period works as a jeweler, carefully setting compositional units in a geometric framework, consistently demonstrating a preference for effects of patterning over realistic representation, and for a unity situated at a higher level than the literal, historical sequence of the narrative. Roberts's introductory chapter is followed by an anthology of representative narrative and descriptive poetry from the fourth and fifth centuries A.D. Next, Roberts traces the use of "jewels" as a literary metaphor from the first century A.D. to late antiquity. He then compares the works of late antique literature to wall and floor mosaics, ivory diptychs, Christian sarcophagi, and contemporary styles of dress. Emphasizing that the poetry of this period is not uniform, he differentiates the main genres of Christian narrative poetry--biblical and hagiographical epic--from secular examples of the jeweled style, such as the poetry of Ausonius and Sidonius. Roberts concludes by examining the influence of late antique aesthetics on the medieval poetics of Matthew of Vendôme and Geoffrey of Vinsauf. One of the objectives of this volume is to redress the balance by allowing more space to discussions of Greek Christian poetry. The contributions collected here ask how Christian poets engage with (and are conscious of) the double reliance of their poetry on two separate systems: on the one hand, the classical poetic models and, on the other, the various genres and sub-genres of Christian prose. Keeping in mind the different settings of the Greek-speaking East and the Latin-speaking West, the contributions seek to understand the impact of historical setting on genre, the influence of the paideia shared by authors and audiences, and the continued relevance of traditional categories of literary genre. While our immediate focus is genre, most of the contributions also engage with the ideological ramifications of the transposition of Christian themes into classicizing literature. This volume offers important and original case studies on the reception and appropriation of the classical past and its literary forms by Christian poetry.

Milton's Paradise Lost is the culmination of the English branch of the tradition. Renewed scholarly interest in the literature of the late Roman period has included a revaluation of its biblical poetry. But attention has been concentrated on the rhetorical skill of the writers; in terms of content it is still often assumed that biblical epic is a straightforward rendering of the bible narrative. Doctrine and Exegesis in Biblical Latin Poetry throws light on an important but under-explored aspect of the content of these works. In a thorough study of how two areas of doctrine significant in late antiquity - the nature of God, and the theory of creation - are represented in the biblical epics, Daniel Nodes shows that the poets were actively commenting on, and propagating particular views of, the vital doctrinal issues of their time. The writers represented in this volume range in time from the fourth to the sixth centuries: the female poet Proba (whose Virgilian Cento is one of the earliest examples of biblical epic), Cyprianus Gallus, Hilarius poeta, Claudius Marius Victorius, the north-African Dracontius, and Avitus, Bishop of Vienne. The author draws on the works of the Church Fathers, both Greek and Latin, and on Jewish exegetical writings.
