Book Synopsis Stages of Industrial Development in Asia by : Sung Jae Koh
Download or read book Stages of Industrial Development in Asia written by Sung Jae Koh and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a major contribution to fuller understanding of the modern economic and industrial history of Asian nations and to the general understanding of the socioeconomic conditions in underdeveloped countries, stressing the history of the modernization of the cotton industry, not merely because of its basic importance but also because such limitation gives definiteness to the subject. The author analyzes all the factors that have changed the tempo, altered the direction, and limited the extent of the industrial development in these countries, with special references to the economic implication of actions by social organizations and political institutions. The volume contains a wealth of detailed statistical matter in which the reader will find systematically the main factual contexts of the industrial development of each country. Sung Jae Koh's service to English readers is therefore an important one in a field where there is an acknowledged growing need for such information. Sung Jae Koh held professorships at Yonsei University and Seoul National University. He was also a visiting scholar at the University of Pennsylvania.

This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of Japan's leading textile firms date back to the turn of the century. Unlike many of their Western competitors, however, Japan's larger companies have survived the "decline" of a sector consumed by fierce international competition. Providing the fullest English-language account of Japanese textiles, Dennis L. McNamara explores the entire sweep of the industry, from factory to high-fashion brokerage to policymaking circle. Tracing the strategies by which the textile industry has survived, he provides a distinctive view of Japanese capitalism in a climate of change. McNamara reconstructs a world riven by the competing interests of state and capital, firm and industry, labor and management, mill and merchant. We encounter giant "mogul" companies and upstart independent "mavericks"—such firms as Toray, Toyobo, Itochu, Tsuzuki, Kondobo, Onward, and Renown—all hustling to restructure for survival. Drawing on extensive interview data as well as recent Japanese and English-language work in political economy and social anthropology, McNamara describes a dynamic of competition between moguls and mavericks in a turbulent business torn by divisions but bound together by compromise. He finds that, despite enormous international pressures, the industry has maintained much of its market share, largely because state bureaucrats and leaders of major firms have managed to create a cooperative politics of adjustment. A corporatist structuring of interests, he concludes, has helped to moderate decline and maintain stability, permitting survival among the moguls without preventing the successful participation of mavericks.

Book Synopsis The Origins of Japanese Trade Supremacy by : Christopher Howe
Download or read book The Origins of Japanese Trade Supremacy written by Christopher Howe and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1999-12-15 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many in the West, the emergence of Japan as an economic superpower has been as surprising as it has been sudden. After its defeat in World War II, Japan hardly appeared a candidate to lead industrialized nations in productivity and technological innovation, and the "Japanese miracle" is often explained as the result of U.S. aid and protection in the postwar years. In The Origins of Japanese Trade Supremacy, Christopher Howe locates the sources of Japan's current commercial and financial strength in events tnat occurred well before 1945. In this revisionist account, Howe traces the history of Japanese trade over four centuries to show that the Japanese mastery of trade with the outside world began as long ago as the sixteenth century, with Japan's first contact with European trading partners. Although profitable, this early contact was so destabilizing that the Japanese leadership soon restricted foreign trade mainly to Asian partners. From the early seventeenth to the middle of the nineteenth centuries, Japan developed in relative isolation. Though secluded from the scientific and economic revolutions in the West, Japan proved adept at finding novel solutions to its own problems, and its economy grew in size, diversity, and technological and institutional sophistication. By the nineteenth century, when contacts with the West were reestablished. Japan had developed a remarkable capacity to absorb foreign technologies and to adapt and create new institutions, while retaining significant elements of its traditional system of values. Most importantly, Japan's long-standing reliance on its own ingenuity to solve problems continued to flourish. This tradition, born of necessity, is the most important foundation for Japan's current position as a world economic power.
