Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Individuality of Saint Paul In many of the translations I am deeply indebted to Dr. Moffatt's The New Testament, A New Trans lation. Where his rendering has been used verbatim, the fact has been duly pointed out. Among modern commentaries, there stands out conspicuously Dr. Denney's on Romans in The Expositor's Greek Testament. How conspicuously it does so in my own case the book itself will show, even where no open acknowledgment is made. As I claim no originality, it is super uous to mention indebtedness in other directions. In the matter of references, I have tried to keep in View, so far as possible, the reader and student of the English Bible, who seeks fearlessly to keep in touch with the modern and constructive side of the historical method. Obscurantism, and indifference to the accredited results of modern scholarship are the besetting sin of much - it may be otherwise effective - popular exegesis and evangelical appeal. To paraphrase Cromwell's words about the State, God, in seeking men to serve Him, takes no notice of their opinions; if they be willing faithfully to serve Him, that satisfies. It is, however, His will that we'serve Him with heart, soul, strength, and mind. There may be an intellectual cross also, which we are asked to carry if not our own, then that which rests on our neighbour's shoulders. The good news for the new day is the ancient novelty of a living Christ, who is competent, as ever, to be His own Interpreter and Commentator, through the Spirit that leads into all the truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Saint Paul We have visited together Ephesus and Antioch, Philippi and Thessalonica, Athens and Corinth, Colossae and Laodicea. Never, upon these difficult and dangerous routes, did I hear thee murmur; as in our journeyings, so in the free pursuit of truth, thou hast never said to me, "Pause." At Seleucia, upon the disjointed blocks of the old mole, we somewhat envied the apostles who set out from there to conquer the world, filled with so fervent a faith in the speedy coming of the kingdom of God. Of a truth, those expectations of something material and near at hand infused into their action an energy which we no longer possess. But, though less determined in form, still is our faith in the ideal reign none the less strong. All is symbol and dream here below. Descartes was right in not believing in the reality of the world until he had satisfied himself of the existence of God. Kant was right in doubting everything until he had discovered duty. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of St. Paul, His Character and Opinions I do not pretend to add anything to the vast accumulation of detail that has been piled about the central figure of the Apostle, till his personality is buried under the mass of material collected. For this I have not the learning. For original research, a study of the localities, their relation to the narrative in the Acts, and for the rehabilitation of the credibility of the book that had been sharply assailed, Professor Ramsay's works have been epoch-making.1 I have made no explorations in Asia Minor, and so can add nothing. There have been studies of St. Paul, as a figure in a stained glass window, in which drawing and colouring are unreal, and the setting is lead. Such studies may be said to be of the past. Download or read book St. Paul written by H. Weinel and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Paul: The Man and His Work The greater part of this book appeared last year as a series of articles in the "Christliche Welt" In answer to repeated requests, I have determined to recast these articles and publish them as a book. There is scarcely a page which has not been changed more or less, and two entire chapters, "The Theologian" and "The Man," have been added. I was more especially inclined to undertake this work because this book forms a necessary supplement to my Jesus in the Nineteenth Century, for it shows how the Gospel came to make that concordat with the "world," i.e. with the ancient state and its religion and morality which we call "church." I have tried to show how necessary and how salutary this compromise was, by what pure motives it was animated, but also with what dangers it was pregnant for the Gospel itself. One other object I have had in writing: I have wanted to make our people understand and love Paul. And so nothing has pleased me more than when schoolmasters and other teachers of religion urged me to publish the articles in book form. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of St. Paul When asked to write a foreword to Dr. Stalker's Life of St. Paul, I thought of two things: first the impression which I had received from a sermon that I heard Dr. Stalker preach a good many years ago in his own pulpit in Glasgow, Scotland, and secondly, the honor conferred in this privilege of writing a foreword to one of Dr. Stalker's books. I felt sure before even glancing at the pages that I should be pleased and profited by their perusal. The first thing that I did was to glance over the pages for the headings Of chapters and the summaries of paragraphs. I found the arrangement admirable, and would advise those into whose hands this fine volume may come to follow this plan. The only sentence apart from the headings which I read in the aforesaid preview was the last one in Chapter X, and that because the closing words, the best Of friends, especially arrested my attention. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Character of Paul Citizen, or Paul the Traveler, or Paul the Orator, or Paul the Ecclesiastic, or Paul the Statesman, or Paul the Missionary, or Paul the Apostle, or Paul the Pastor and Teacher, but Paul the Man. I do not write even of Saint Paul. Let us for a time drop the word Saint. It is to some a repellent word - a sort of verbal veil over the face of the man who wears it. It digs a gulf between the man who has it, and the man who knows that he has no claim to sainthood. Let us sweep away the barriers and get rid of all the chasms. My aim is to bring Paul near. My desire is to bring him so near that you can feel his heart-beat, and hear him breathe. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: How do you tailor education to the learning needs of adults? Do they learn differently from children? How does their life experience inform their learning processes? These were the questions at the heart of Malcolm Knowles’s pioneering theory of andragogy which transformed education theory in the 1970s. The resulting principles of a self-directed, experiential, problem-centered approach to learning have been hugely influential and are still the basis of the learning practices we use today. Understanding these principles is the cornerstone of increasing motivation and enabling adult learners to achieve.
