Further, not much is known on how perceptions of the college campus environment vary by social identity, such as Greek affiliation. This study was a secondary data analysis from a campus climate survey on sexual assault. Participants were 2,782 undergraduate students at Indiana University Bloomington. The present study examined differences between Greek and independent students on beliefs about campus safety, beliefs about the university's response to reports of sexual violence, and bystander intervention confidence. Additionally, the study explored how Greek affiliation and gender influence beliefs about campus safety and beliefs about the university's response to reports of sexual violence on bystander intervention confidence. Among Greek-affiliated students, the study also investigated the impacts of gender and knowledge of campus resources on beliefs about the university's response to reports of sexual violence and bystander intervention confidence. Results indicate that women endorsed lower scores for beliefs about campus safety and beliefs about the university's response to reports of sexual violence than men, and that Greek students reported a higher bystander intervention confidence (BIC) than independent students. Results also suggest that gender moderates the relationship between beliefs about campus safety and bystander intervention confidence. Similarly, gender was shown to moderate the relationship between beliefs about the university's response to reports of sexual violence and bystander intervention confidence in all students and within Greek affiliated students. A discussion of implications, limitations, and future directions for research, prevention, and intervention is included.

Book excerpt: College students face many health challenges, including alcohol misuse, experiences of sexual violence, hate and bias, and poor mental health. Bystander intervention programming is a method for addressing these health concerns by increasing the willingness and ability of students to intervene for their peers. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the bystander intervention program for first-year students by assessing changes in scores of bystander efficacy and bystander intervention behaviors after program participation. Changes in these scores were assessed in the context of several demographic characteristics (i.e. biological sex/gender identity, sexual orientation, race/ethnicity, first-generation status, fraternity or sorority membership, sports team membership, international status, and veteran status). Data analysis revealed no statistically significant changes in scores of bystander efficacy and bystander intervention behavior after program implementation and no statistically significant differences between scores for the demographic groups. However, scores of bystander efficacy and bystander intervention behavior were higher after program implementation, and scores for females, LGBTQ+, non-white, non-first-generation students, fraternity and sorority members, sports team members, and international students were higher than their peers for both bystander efficacy and bystander intervention behavior. Results from this study support the implementation of bystander intervention programming for first-year students.

Evidence shows that sorority women are more likely to become victims of sexual assault; however, few studies examine the relationship between sorority members and the bystander intention to intervene. The present study used social learning and multidimensional response to change theories to look at differences in bystander intervention intention between sorority women and non-affiliated women at the same university. A total of 209 sorority women and 289 non-affiliated women completed a survey in October and November 2019 which employed a framework developed by Burn (2009) to examine bystander intervention intention in relation to five identified barriers: failure to notice, failure to identify the situation as high-risk, failure to take responsibility for intervening, failure to intervene due to a skills deficit, and failure to intervene due to audience inhibition. Analysis of the collected data analysis found that a difference only existed between the two groups in the identified barrier of failure to intervene due to a skills deficit, with the sorority women indicating confidence in this area, while the non-affiliated women did not. For each of the other four identified barriers, both groups indicated confidence, albeit at differing levels. The study also found differences in various barrier subscale items between the groups, potential causes for the impact of those barriers, and additional barriers to intervention"--Author's abstract.

Bystander intervention programs have been created in order to teach people how to recognize situations in which to intervene and how to prevent harm. Bystander intervention programs are most commonly found on college campuses to prevent student misconduct, like sexual assault, in order to reduce the possibility of severe consequences, such as developing depression, anxiety, being physically injured, and being criminally charged. Hazing is another type of student misconduct that can have negative physical and mental health risks and is illegal. Academic dishonesty is also a form of student misconduct that can lead to failing classes, expulsion, a lack of competency, and a lack of ethical standards. There are not many methods of prevention on college campuses for hazing and academic dishonesty as there are for sexual assault. In this study, student bystander intervention likelihood was examined for sexual assault, hazing, and academic dishonesty with the predictor variables of assertiveness, self-transcendence, and gender. The results show that the combination of assertiveness, self-transcendence, and gender do predict bystander intervention likelihood for situations of sexual assault and hazing, with self-transcendence being the only factor that significantly added to the prediction. The predictor variables did not significantly predict bystander intervention in situations of academic dishonesty. The results of this study suggest that colleges and college administrators may want to consider promoting the values of self-transcendence into their preexisting bystander intervention programs for sexual assault and may want to create bystander intervention programs for the prevention of hazing.
