Rich in explanatory figures and schematics, the book includes important concepts such as structural and cellular composition of mucosal surfaces in fish and shellfish, known functional roles of molecular and cellular actors during pathogen invasion, impacts of nutrition on the mucosal barriers, impacts of chemical treatments on mucosal surfaces, mucosal vaccines and vaccination strategies, and more. The health of cultured aquaculture species is critical in establishing the sustainable growth of the aquaculture industry worldwide, and mucosal health is of particular interest to those working in aquaculture because mucosal surfaces (skin, gill, intestine, reproductive tissues) constitute the first line of defense against pathogen invasion. Mucosal Health in Aquaculture captures the latest research on mucosal barriers in aquaculture species and their impacts on nutrition and immunity to ensure sustainable aquaculture development. Includes research case studies to exhibit the importance of various integrated approaches to mucosal health Examines the latest scientific methods and technologies to maximize efficiencies for healthy fish production for farming Brings together the latest knowledge and research on mucosal barriers and mechanisms from world-wide experts in mucosal health Utilizes detailed diagrams and figures to enhance comprehension

Book excerpt: The channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) is susceptible to bacterial and viral infections acqired from its pond environment. The innate immune proteins mannose-binding lectin (MBL) and lysozyme were studied in two different groups of channel catfish aged 2, 4, 6, 9, and 12 months-old. The two groups were maintained at a mean temperature of 27 0C and were one-year apart in their bleedings. Dot-blot enzyme linked immunosorbent assay for MBL and turbidometry lysozyme quantitive assays were done to determine the two innate immune proteins. The greatest increases in mean MBL and mean lysozyme concentrations were seen at 4 months. Two month-old catfish were comparable with 12 month-old catfish in their concentrations of MBL and lysozyme (p

This book was released on 2021-06-30 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Good fish health and welfare are essential components of sustainable aquaculture and in this regard, fish parasites constitute a major constraint to production. The aquaculture industries of areas affected by various disease outbreaks have suffered considerably from the impacts of marine and freshwater parasites. It is therefore fundamentally important to take steps to prevent parasite infection, as well as to properly identify, monitor and treat outbreaks when they occur. ParaFishControl, an EU-funded project involving industry, academic and government partners drawn from across Europe, whose work has led to this book, is dedicated to effectively understanding and controlling a diverse range of fish parasites in order to promote the sustainability and competitiveness of the European aquaculture industry. Fish Parasites contains detailed outlines of the most up to date protocols for parasite isolation, culture and transmission, as well as detailed procedures for reproducing parasitic infections in a laboratory environment. Protocols for tasks such as monitoring parasitic infection, isolating parasites and preparing parasite material are explained in detail. In addition, an introduction is provided to the biology and host interactions of each parasite discussed. Fish Parasites provides an essential guide for those who are currently researching fish-parasite relations, as well as for those who may study fish health and welfare more generally or otherwise have broader interests in fish parasites. 5m Books

This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Virulent Aeromonas hydrophila (vAh) is a causative agent of motile Aeromonas septicemia (MAS) in catfish. There are limitations in the current therapeutic and preventative strategies against vAh. The pathogenesis of MAS as well as the immune response of catfish to vAh infection are poorly understood. The aim of this study is to: 1) develop a dual live attenuated vaccine against MAS and enteric septicemia of catfish caused by Edwardsiella ictaluri; and 2) evaluate the vAh bacterial load and gene expression patterns in catfish tissues following vAh infection. Previously, six recombinant vAh proteins (outer membrane protein, TonB-dependent receptor, three fimbrial proteins, and an ATPase) were identified to have vaccine efficacy against MAS, and live attenuated E. ictaluri vaccine strain ESC-NDKL1 was identified as an effective vector for expressing vAh antigens. A total of 29 recombinant ESC-NDKL1 strains have been constructed with the integration of one, two, or three genes encoding vAh antigens into the ESC-NDKL1 chromosome. Vaccine efficacy of the constructed strains was evaluated in channel catfish fingerlings. Four recombinant ESC-NDKL1 strains expressing two vAh antigens (ESC-NDKL1::atpase::fimMrfG, ESC-NDKL1::fim::fimMrfG, ESC-NDKL1::tdr::fimMrfG, and ESC-NDKL1::fim::ompA) showed significant protection against MAS with relative percent of survival (RPS) values of 55.72%, 60.18%, 61.74%, and 54.81%. Four triple recombinant ESC-NDKL1 strains (ESC-NDKL1::fimMrfG::ompA::fimA, ESC-NDKL1::atpase::fimMrfG::ompA, ESC-NDKL1::fim::fimMrfG::ompA and ESC-NDKL1::atpase::tdr::fim) showed the best protection with RPS values of 77.93%, 63.18%, 67.74%, and 82.35%. To gain a better understanding of vAh pathogenesis, catfish fingerlings were intraperitoneally injected with vAh strain ML09-119. The anterior kidney, liver, and spleen were collected for determination of vAh distribution and expression of thirteen pro-inflammatory, innate, and adaptive immune-related genes using real-time PCR. Results revealed that vAh spread into catfish tissues within 2 hours and peaked at 12 hours post-infection. vAh infection initiated a strong inflammatory response in catfish tissues. Additionally, our research revealed that surviving catfish were able to develop a primary immune response and possibly generation of memory B cells against MAS. Such information will facilitate the development of vaccines and therapeutic drugs for preventing and treating MAS outbreaks in catfish aquaculture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of channel catfish farming in the United States serves as a model for the development of pond-based aquaculture industries worldwide. Channel catfish farming is the largest and economically most important aquaculture industry in the United States. In 2003, over 300,000 metric tons (662 million pounds) of channel catfish were processed, representing about half the total United States aquaculture production. Demand for farm-raised catfish is strong, with record processing years in 2002 and 2003. In 22 chapters written by active scientists in the field, Biology and Culture of Channel Catfish comprehensively synthesizes over 30 years of research on this American icon. Throughout the book, fundamental biological aspects of channel catfish are linked to practical culture techniques. Topics include: • Latest information on reproductive physiology, genetics, and breeding • Comprehensive treatment of catfish nutrition, feeds, and feeding practices • Water quality management and pond dynamics • In-depth review of immunology in channel catfish • Practical information on diseases and health management • Techniques for commercial culture, including innovative techniques such as raceways, recirculating systems, and partitioned aquaculture systems • Catfish economics and marketing • Exploration of environmental concerns, including recommended Best Management Practices

Book excerpt: Focusing on pathobiology and protective strategies against protozoan and metazoan parasites of fish, this book reviews the latest research on important parasites: those that cause financial hardships to the aquaculture industry, have been introduced to new geographical regions through transportation of infected fish, are pathogenic to groups of finfish and detrimental to production, are highly adaptable and not host-specific with worldwide distributions, and that may serve as disease models for studies on other pathogens. It also highlights gaps in the knowledge to help direct future research.
