Book Synopsis The Holy One in Our Midst by : James R. Gordon
Download or read book The Holy One in Our Midst written by James R. Gordon and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Holy One in Our Midst: An Essay on the Flesh of Christ aims to defend the doctrine of the extra Calvinisticum—the doctrine that maintains the Son of God was not restricted to the flesh of Christ during the incarnation—by arguing that it is logically coherent, biblically warranted, catholically orthodox, and theologically useful. It shows that none of the standard objections are devastating to the extra, that the doctrine is rooted in the claims of Christian Scripture and not merely a remnant of perfect being philosophical theology, and that the doctrine plays an important role in contemporary theological discussion. In this way, James R. Gordon revives an important Catholic doctrine that has fallen out of favor in contemporary theology. Secondarily, this project aims to integrate biblical, philosophical, and systematic theology by showing that the tools and methods of each distinct discipline can contribute to the goals and aims of the others.

Book Synopsis The Holy One of Israel by : John N. Oswalt
Download or read book The Holy One of Israel written by John N. Oswalt and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-05-29 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing out of the work that the author did in preparing two major commentaries on Isaiah, these essays range from comprehensive to specific, and from popular to scholarly. They first appeared in biblical dictionaries, scholarly journals, and popular periodicals. Gathered here for the first time, they display in various ways how the author sees the various parts of Isaiah functioning together to give a coherent message to the church. The opening chapters lay out Oswalt's understanding of the overall message of the book of Isaiah. Subsequent chapters consider such themes as holiness and righteousness as they function in that larger structure. The concluding chapters look at selected sections of Isaiah in more detail, noting how those specific messages contribute to the overall whole.
Book Synopsis God, Creation, and Revelation by : Paul King Jewett
Download or read book God, Creation, and Revelation written by Paul King Jewett and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1991 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theology that is real, readable, and relevant -- such is Paul Jewett's God, Creation, and Revelation. Writing from a distinctively evangelical and Reformed viewpoint, Jewett offers a general, systematic introduction to these doctrines of the Christian church: how we know God (revelation and Scripture); who God is (the divine nature); what God is like (the divine attributes); and what God has done (creation). / While upholding the historic Christian faith, Jewett's approach to Christian teaching is uniquely "neo-evangelical" in that he seeks to expound and clarify orthodox Christianity for twentieth-century Christians: Jewett purposely sets forth his systematic theology in light of scientific and social issues that confront the church in the contemporary world. Throughout the book Jewett also refers to literary masterpieces and to the church's hymns, giving the reader a greater appreciation for the theological treasures in our literature and our hymnody. / The culmination of nearly forty years of study and teaching, this book adeptly balances the philosophical efforts needed in systematic theology with the biblical material in which Christian doctrines are rooted, and it covers well the range of theologies -- from the early fathers to the Scholastics, from the Reformers to liberation and feminist theologians. Interspersed throughout the text are useful addenda and excursuses, which provide further detailed treatment of specific topics. / An unusual feature of God, Creation, and Revelation is Jewett's inclusion of eight sermons by Dr. Marguerite Shuster, a former student of his. Believing that theology and preaching must go together, Jewett has strategically placed these sermons throughout the book as creative examples of how to preach Christian doctrines.

Download or read book Holiness written by John Webster and published by SCM Press. This book was released on 2003-03-15 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, Webster presents a trinitarian theology of holiness, which is aimed at a wide range of audiences, including ordinands, students of theology and interested laypeople. According to this account, God's holiness is known not in his simple transcendence but in his gracious and free relationship to his creatures. That holiness finds an echo in the holiness of the Christian community, especially in worship and witness, and in the life of the individual disciple. Integrating biblical, dogmatic and practical theology, the book - which is based on the Day-Higginbotham lectures delivered in the University of Toronto in 2002 - offers a succinct account of a central theme in Christian teaching and practice.
Download or read book Sanctification written by Michael Allen and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sanctification—the act or process of becoming holy—is one of the gifts of the gospel of Jesus Christ, but it's often misunderstood by the modern church. Sanctification offers a Christ-centered and clear account of the doctrine by viewing it within its wider biblical and historical context. Churches too often allow their definitions of holiness to be prompted by existential goals or the social mores of the Christian community. It's not surprising, then, that many view holiness as accidental or expendable, even as a legalistic posture opposed to the freedom of the gospel and separate from the gift of grace. Sanctification (part of the New Studies in Dogmatics series), defines holiness in theological terms by: Providing a framework by discussing the core Christian doctrines associated with it, such as the character of God, the nature of creation, and the covenantal shape of life with God. Considering the ways in which the gospel of Jesus not only prompts us to holy action but provides holiness as one of its blessings. Attending to the ways in which the gift of sanctification relates to human means, so that we can appreciate its connection to human nature, responsibility, and the pedagogy of exemplars and of law. -ABOUT THE SERIES- New Studies in Dogmatics seeks to retrieve the riches of Christian doctrine for the sake of contemporary theological renewal. Following in the tradition of G. C. Berkouwer's Studies in Dogmatics, this series provides thoughtful, concise, and readable treatments of major theological topics, expressing the biblical, creedal, and confessional shape of Christian doctrine for a contemporary evangelical audience. The editors and contributors share a common conviction that the way forward in constructive systematic theology lies in building upon the foundations laid in the church's historic understanding of the Word of God as professed in its creeds, councils, and confessions, and by its most trusted teachers.

Download or read book Teaching and Tradition written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-10-09 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the crucial role of teaching in the process of tradition. The various essays present case studies, written by specialists in the field, on themes drawn from the biblical, Jewish and Christian practice of ‘tradition’, the passing on of faith from generation to generation. Underlying these essays is the conviction that teaching is a privileged context for the study of tradition, since it always both preserves and renews tradition. There is no tradition without teaching, in which the past is interpreted in the present and the present is seen in the light of the past. Contributors are: Jan Bouwens, Rob V.J. Faesen, Leon Mock, Jos Moons, Krijn Pansters, Henk J. M. Schoot, Rudi A. te Velde, Archibald L. H. M. van Wieringen, and Ruben J. van Wingerden.

Book excerpt: Between 1971 and 1996 the late John Howard Yoder (1927-1997) wrote a series of ten essays revisiting the Jewish-Christian schism in which he argued that, properly understood, Jesus did not reject Judaism, Judaism did not reject Jesus, and the Apostle Paul’s universal mandate for the salvation of the nations is best understood not as a product of Hellenization, but rather in the context of his Jewish heritage. This posthumous collection of essays is arguably his most ambitious project and displays Yoder’s original thesis that the Jewish-Christian schism did not have to be. Originally published in 2003 by SCM Press and Eerdmans.
