Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians generally recognize the need to live a holy, or sanctified, life. But they differ on what sanctification is and how it is achieved. How does one achieve sanctification in this life? How much success in sanctification is possible? Is a crisis experience following one's conversion normal--or necessary? If so, what kind of experience, and how is it verified? Five Views on Sanctification--part of the Counterpoints series--brings together in one easy-to-understand volume five major Protestant views on sanctification: Wesleyan View – represented by Melvin E. Dieter Reformed View – represented by Anthony A. Hoekema Pentecostal View – represented by Stanley M. Horton Keswick View – represented by J. Robertson McQuilkin Augustinian-Dispensationalism View – represented by John F. Walvoord Writing from a solid evangelical stance, each author describes and defends his own understanding of the doctrine sanctification and then responds to the views of the other authors. The Counterpoints series presents a comparison and critique of scholarly views on topics important to Christians that are both fair-minded and respectful of the biblical text. Each volume is a one-stop reference that allows readers to evaluate the different positions on a specific issue and form their own, educated opinion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faith and Sanctification is the first volume to appear in the First American Edition of a series of monographs covering the whole field of Christian theology. In this volume, Professor Berkouwer sets forth the gravity of the Christian's responsibility: "Ye are the light of the world." Also is involved the paradox of the modesty of sanctification and its inherent radiance -- "For there is nothing hid, save that it should be manifested; neither was anything made secret, but that it should come to light"--That gives it its peculiar character. - Jacket flap.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What role does the Christian community play in the process of growing in Christian maturity? This book argues that in Pauline theology the redeemed community is a necessary means for the progressive sanctification of the individual believer, an idea that is largely misunderstood in parts of the Western church. It evaluates foundational theological considerations traditionally omitted from sanctification studies and places them within the context of Pauline theology. Included are the missiological nature of holiness, the initiatory character of God, the creation of the new humanity as reflecting the image of God, and the impact upon the church resulting from the radical redefinition by Christ of the cultural symbols surrounding the Jewish temple system. This book offers a corrective to the individualized approach to Christian growth: For Paul, the focus of God's transformative activity culminates with the community rather than the individual, the goal of which is to reveal God's glory to the broader creation.

Have you wanted to know how you might better defeat nagging sins, and find new freedom? Sanctification: A User's Guide to Becoming More Like Jesus offers you a deep understanding of precisely how you can grow in likeness to Jesus Christ. Based upon a careful study of the teachings of the Bible, and great leaders of the Reformation, Sanctification presents a clear and compelling approach to daily practices which will actually assist the Christian in spiritual growth through relying on the grace of God to transform them. Starting with a framework for understanding what holiness is, Sanctification shows you how to: desire holiness, rely on God's grace, apprehend God's life-altering love, grow in faith and repentance, deny one's self, and engage the church. While many books on sanctification emphasize one or two aspects of the Christian's growth in holiness Sanctification presents a complete approach to a biblical lifestyle which helps one grow more like Christ.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do we see so much fruitful good in unbelievers and so much evil in believers? What could it mean for a believer that the old is “gone,” especially when it doesn’t feel that way? What does it mean for humans who are simul iustus et peccator (simultaneously righteous and sinner) to be transformed in Christ and by his Spirit? We typically think of sanctification as pertaining to humans being conformed to Jesus, but what could it mean when Jesus speaks of himself as being sanctified for our sakes (John 17:19)? Jeff McSwain mines the theology of Karl Barth to engage such questions. In looking “through the simul,” he concludes with Barth that universal human transformation is a reality before it is a possibility, and that, despite our contradictory state, we may live Spirit-filled lives as we participate in Christ’s true humanity that determines ours—a humanity which never gets old.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the sixteenth century the Western Church was rent asunder by the quarrel over justification. Today scholars from churches on both sides of the controversy are carefully rethinking the question. Dr. Toon shows how contemporary biblical scholarship and exegesis are attempting to resolve the thorny question of justification without compromising the integrity of either side. Provocative and far-reaching in its analysis and conclusions, Justification and Sanctification gives the student an invaluable introduction while providing the scholar a fresh look at the issue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we come to the foot of the Cross and look toward Jesus it is glorious. But, if we do not spiritually move beyond the Cross, then we are living in the shadow of Jesus' death and not the fullness of His life. Sanctification is one of the basic elements at the very core of Christianity. Yet, at some point in history it has become a rarely understood term. Did you know that Scripture teaches five forms of sanctification? With great wisdom and insight, Jackson describes the essentiality of sanctification and draws a picture of the Trinity that can be clearly seen. She presents a vision of the bondage of sin into which we all fall and offers the method to becoming a true servant of God, which we all need. Beyond the Cross will open your eyes and change your heart!

Book excerpt: The opposition against legalism and Antinomianism is one fight that Calvin, the Westminster Divines, and Walter Marshall were involved in. Both errors are strongly connected, and we are prone to swing between these two errors. Each of them leads to the other. When we think that being forgiven in Christ means that we are not bound to the law, we fall into Antinomianism. As a reaction against Antinomianism, we can go to the other extreme, which is legalism. In legalism, we try to secure obedience by making it the condition for our salvation, and hence it becomes a heavy burden. The final result of this swinging is despair, which leads to hatred of the law and subsequently of God. The swinging between these two errors can only be broken by the gospel.

Those who come to Christ are sanctified; that is, set apart for God s plan and purpose. However, sanctification is not just a positional work of grace, but also a conditional work of believers as they grow in the knowledge of Christ. In this issue, we will discuss the doctrine of sanctification and its place in the Christian s life. In addition, we will explore the conditional and positional aspects of sanctification and its relationship to holiness.
