Includes vampires, fae, a hot one-eyed werewolf P.I., and a sassy jersey-girl ready to clean-up supernatural messes. From the authors of the MYTHVERSE and POWERS OF THE ZODIAC paranormal series. Things are about to get messy... I’m Paige Harper, and while I’ve lost some things over the years—my parents, some business, a couple pair of panties—I think I might have finally found a man to settle down with...except he’s a werewolf. Nico and I have barely had time to declare our feelings, much less get any time alone, when we discover there might be an answer to the big question of what happened during the Great Ghosting—a mass disappearance which claimed my family. In fact—we might even be able to reverse it. But that means going into the heart of O.H.I.O, a super-secret, anti-supe organization that has terrorized me and my friends before. I’ve got some info that could bring them down, and they’ve extended an olive branch...but there just might be a blade behind it. When things turn sinister, it looks like one of us might end up dead before Nico and I get to seal the deal—in bed. My man will defend me to the end, but that means accessing his darker side, and the violence that’s led him astray before. When push comes to shove, will Nico become the cruel monster he was before I knew him? And, am I willing to give up everything – including my life, and a possible future with Nico - in order to get my parents back? One things for sure—nobody is coming out of this clean. Book excerpt: A story about growth, failure, and redemption, Ghosts of Tom Joad traces the rise of the working poor and the don't-have-to-work-rich as it follows the fortunes of the protagonist Earl. A product of the post-Korean War era, Earl witnesses his parents' kitchen table arguments over money--echoed in thousands of other Rust Belt towns--experiences bullying, relishes first kisses, and comes of age and matures as a man before the economic hardships of the 1980s and 1990s wear on his spirit. Earl takes his turn at a variety of low-paying retail jobs in the new economy before becoming mired in homelessness and succumbing to meth, alcohol, and destitution. As he takes a final, metaphorical bus ride, Earl reflects on his past, considering the impact of the war on his father--and, subsequently, on himself--his own demise, and the romance between himself and Angel, which ultimately redeems him. This is a tale about the death of manufacturing, the deindustrialization of America, and a way of life that has been irrevocably lost. Anyone interested in the impact of political and business policy on the American Dream will be drawn to this profound, humorous, and moving novel.

Book excerpt: It's been two months since Travis's family moved to a development so new that it seems totally unreal. His parents are working harder now, to pay for it all, and Travis is left to fend for himself. There's one place, though, where Travis can still connect with his old life: the Salinas library. Travis and his family used to go there together every Saturday, but now he bikes to it alone, re-reading his favorite books. It's only natural that Travis likes the work of author John Steinbeck—after all, Salinas is Steinbeck's hometown. But that can't explain why Travis is suddenly seeing Steinbeck's characters spring to life. There's the homeless man in the alley behind the library, the line of figures at the top of a nearby ridge, the boy who writes by night in an attic bedroom. Travis has met them all before—as a reader. But why are they here now? And how? As Travis struggles to solve this mystery, budget cuts threaten his library. And so, he embarks on a journey through Steinbeck's beautiful California landscape, looking for a way to save his safe haven. It's only then that he begins to sort out fact from fiction, discovering the many ways a story can come alive—and stumbling into a story Steinbeck might have started, and Travis needs to complete. Here is a mystery that delves deeply into the ways that books take us, one at a time, out into the vast world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vietnamese culture and religious traditions place the utmost importance on dying well: in old age, body unblemished, with surviving children, and properly buried and mourned. More than five million people were killed in the Vietnam War, many of them young, many of them dying far from home. Another 300,000 are still missing. Having died badly, they are thought to have become angry ghosts, doomed to spend eternity in a kind of spirit hell. Decades after the war ended, many survivors believe that the spirits of those dead and missing have returned to haunt their loved ones. In War and Shadows, the anthropologist Mai Lan Gustafsson tells the story of the anger of these spirits and the torments of their kin. Gustafsson's rich ethnographic research allows her to bring readers into the world of spirit possession, focusing on the source of the pain, the physical and mental anguish the spirits bring, and various attempts to ameliorate their anger through ritual offerings and the intervention of mediums. Through a series of personal life histories, she chronicles the variety of ailments brought about by the spirits' wrath, from headaches and aching limbs (often the same limb lost by a loved one in battle) to self-mutilation. In Gustafsson's view, the Communist suppression of spirit-based religion after the fall of Saigon has intensified anxieties about the well-being of the spirit world. While shrines and mourning are still allowed, spirit mediums were outlawed and driven underground, along with many of the other practices that might have provided some comfort. Despite these restrictions, she finds, victims of these hauntings do as much as possible to try to lay their ghosts to rest.

Book excerpt: When people talk about or experience paranormal activity, ghosts are often a component--and enough of a component to be worth investigating and discussing. the popular theory about ghosts is that they are spirits of humans who have died, but this isn't consistent with teachings from the Bible. So, as Christians, we ask "Who and what are they?" to answer this, God, Ghosts & Christians looks briefly at various current theories, followed by an extensive look at ghosts from a Christian point of view, supported by biblical passages and personal experiences of the author and others. the author, an ordained minister, will take you through all aspects of the existence of ghosts in our world--from the ones that are demons to those that are well meaning and kind. Don't be fooled by media and nonbelievers--there is a quiet, but serious, war going on between Christians and ghosts. This book will affirm your beliefs, show you how to protect yourself and those you love and encourage you to help quiet the "whispers," and win the war.

Joe Runningwind aka Tlingit Joe and his partner in crime Rilo Suggs run the anchorage underground with an iron fist until their untimely demise. Like many other Alaskan natives during this time, Tlingit Joe was stripped of his ancestor’s land and resources in a blatant display of racial hatred toward Alaskan natives. However, do to his connections in the anchorage underground and his choice to have a black man (Rilo Suggs) as a business partner made Tlingit Joe a real nuisance to the powers that be. It all ended in their brutal deaths, and in his last breath, Tlingit Joe vowed his revenge! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new collection from “one of the world’s great essayists” (The New York Times) The Ghosts of Birds offers thirty-five essays by Eliot Weinberger: the first section of the book continues his linked serial-essay, An Elemental Thing, which pulls the reader into “a vortex for the entire universe” (Boston Review). Here, Weinberger chronicles a nineteenth-century journey down the Colorado River, records the dreams of people named Chang, and shares other factually verifiable discoveries that seem too fabulous to possibly be true. The second section collects Weinberger’s essays on a wide range of subjects—some of which have been published in Harper’s, New York Review of Books, and London Review of Books—including his notorious review of George W. Bush’s memoir Decision Points and writings about Mongolian art and poetry, different versions of the Buddha, American Indophilia (“There is a line, however jagged, from pseudo-Hinduism to Malcolm X”), Béla Balázs, Herbert Read, and Charles Reznikoff. This collection proves once again that Weinberger is “one of the bravest and sharpest minds in the United States” (Javier Marías).
