Download or read book The Gelfand Mathematical Seminars, 1993–1995 written by I.M. Gelfand and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 1996-06-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Seminar has taken place at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, since 1990 and it has become a tradition, starting in 1992, that the Seminar be held during July at IHES in Bures-sur-Yvette, France. This is the second Gelfand Seminar volume published by Birkhauser, the first having covered the years 1990-1992. Most of the papers in this volume result from Seminar talks at Rutgers, and some from talks at IHES. In the case of a few of the papers the authors did not attend, but the papers are in the spirit of the Seminar. This is true in particular of V. Arnold's paper. He has been connected with the Seminar for so many years that his paper is very natural in this volume, and we are happy to have it included here. We hope that many people will find something of interest to them in the special diversity of topics and the uniqueness of spirit represented here. The publication of this volume would be impossible without the devoted attention of Ann Kostant. We are extremely grateful to her. I. Gelfand J. Lepowsky M. Smirnov Questions and Answers About Geometric Evolution Processes and Crystal Growth Fred Almgren We discuss evolutions of solids driven by boundary curvatures and crystal growth with Gibbs-Thomson curvature effects. Geometric measure theo retic techniques apply both to smooth elliptic surface energies and to non differentiable crystalline surface energies.
Book Synopsis Conférence Moshé Flato 1999 by : Giuseppe Dito
Download or read book Conférence Moshé Flato 1999 written by Giuseppe Dito and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-07-31 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These two volumes constitute the Proceedings of the `Conférence Moshé Flato, 1999'. Their spectrum is wide but the various areas covered are, in fact, strongly interwoven by a common denominator, the unique personality and creativity of the scientist in whose honor the Conference was held, and the far-reaching vision that underlies his scientific activity. With these two volumes, the reader will be able to take stock of the present state of the art in a number of subjects at the frontier of current research in mathematics, mathematical physics, and physics. Volume I is prefaced by reminiscences of and tributes to Flato's life and work. It also includes a section on the applications of sciences to insurance and finance, an area which was of interest to Flato before it became fashionable. The bulk of both volumes is on physical mathematics, where the reader will find these ingredients in various combinations, fundamental mathematical developments based on them, and challenging interpretations of physical phenomena. Audience: These volumes will be of interest to researchers and graduate students in a variety of domains, ranging from abstract mathematics to theoretical physics and other applications. Some parts will be accessible to proficient undergraduate students, and even to persons with a minimum of scientific knowledge but enough curiosity.

Book Synopsis Mathematical Aspects of Quantization by : Sam Evens
Download or read book Mathematical Aspects of Quantization written by Sam Evens and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2012 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of expository articles from the Center of Mathematics at Notre Dame's 2011 program on quantization. Included are lecture notes from a summer school on quantization on topics such as the Cherednik algebra, geometric quantization, detailed proofs of Willwacher's results on the Kontsevich graph complex, and group-valued moment maps. This book also includes expository articles on quantization and automorphic forms, renormalization, Berezin-Toeplitz quantization in the complex setting, and the commutation of quantization with reduction, as well as an original article on derived Poisson brackets. The primary goal of this volume is to make topics in quantization more accessible to graduate students and researchers.

Download or read book Aspects of Boundary Problems in Analysis and Geometry written by Juan Gil and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boundary problems constitute an essential field of common mathematical interest, they lie in the center of research activities both in analysis and geometry. This book encompasses material from both disciplines, and focuses on their interactions which are particularly apparent in this field. Moreover, the survey style of the contributions makes the topics accessible to a broad audience with a background in analysis or geometry, and enables the reader to get a quick overview.
Book Synopsis Period Domains over Finite and p-adic Fields by : Jean-François Dat
Download or read book Period Domains over Finite and p-adic Fields written by Jean-François Dat and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-07-08 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is, on the one hand, a pedagogical introduction to the formalism of slopes, of semi-stability and of related concepts in the simplest possible context. It is therefore accessible to any graduate student with a basic knowledge in algebraic geometry and algebraic groups. On the other hand, the book also provides a thorough introduction to the basics of period domains, as they appear in the geometric approach to local Langlands correspondences and in the recent conjectural p-adic local Langlands program. The authors provide numerous worked examples and establish many connections to topics in the general area of algebraic groups over finite and local fields. In addition, the end of each section includes remarks on open questions, historical context and references to the literature.
Book Synopsis A Guide to the Literature on Semirings and their Applications in Mathematics and Information Sciences by : K. Glazek
Download or read book A Guide to the Literature on Semirings and their Applications in Mathematics and Information Sciences written by K. Glazek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a short guide to the extensive literature concerning semir ings along with a complete bibliography. The literature has been created over many years, in variety of languages, by authors representing different schools of mathematics and working in various related fields. In many instances the terminology used is not universal, which further compounds the difficulty of locating pertinent sources even in this age of the Internet and electronic dis semination of research results. So far there has been no single reference that could guide the interested scholar or student to the relevant publications. This book is an attempt to fill this gap. My interest in the theory of semirings began in the early sixties, when to gether with Bogdan W ~glorz I tried to investigate some algebraic aspects of compactifications of topological spaces, semirings of semicontinuous functions, and the general ideal theory for special semirings. (Unfortunately, local alge braists in Poland told me at that time that there was nothing interesting in investigating semiring theory because ring theory was still being developed). However, some time later we became aware of some similar investigations hav ing already been done. The theory of semirings has remained "my first love" ever since, and I have been interested in the results in this field that have been appearing in literature (even though I have not been active in this area myself).
