This book was released on 2021-08-16 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Testimonios brings together first-person narratives from the vibrant, diverse, and complex Latinx and Hispanic mathematical community. Starting with childhood and family, the authors recount their own individual stories, highlighting their upbringing, education, and career paths. Their particular stories, told in their own voices, from their own perspectives, give visibility to some of the experiences of Latinx/Hispanic mathematicians. Testimonios seeks to inspire the next generation of Latinx and Hispanic mathematicians by featuring the stories of people like them, holding a mirror up to our own community. It also aims to provide a window for mathematicians (and aspiring mathematicians) from all ethnicities, with the hope of inspiring a better understanding of the diversity of the mathematical community.
Book Synopsis The Calculus of Variations in the Large by : Marston Morse
Download or read book The Calculus of Variations in the Large written by Marston Morse and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1934-12-31 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Morse theory is a study of deep connections between analysis and topology. In its classical form, it provides a relationship between the critical points of certain smooth functions on a manifold and the topology of the manifold. It has been used by geometers, topologists, physicists, and others as a remarkably effective tool to study manifolds. In the 1980s and 1990s, Morse theory was extended to infinite dimensions with great success. This book is Morse's own exposition of his ideas. It has been called one of the most important and influential mathematical works of the twentieth century. Calculus of Variations in the Large is certainly one of the essential references on Morse theory.

Book Synopsis Mirror Symmetry and Algebraic Geometry by : David A. Cox
Download or read book Mirror Symmetry and Algebraic Geometry written by David A. Cox and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1999 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematicians wanting to get into the field ... will find a very well written and encyclopaedic account of the mathematics which was needed in, and was developed from, what now might be termed classical mirror symmetry. --Bulletin of the LMS The book is highly recommended for everyone who wants to learn about the fascinating recent interplay between physics and mathematics. --Mathematical Reviews Mirror symmetry began when theoretical physicists made some astonishing predictions about rational curves on quintic hypersurfaces in four-dimensional projective space. Understanding the mathematics behind these predictions has been a substantial challenge. This book is a completely comprehensive monograph on mirror symmetry, covering the original observations by the physicists through the most recent progress made to date. Subjects discussed include toric varieties, Hodge theory, Kahler geometry, moduli of stable maps, Calabi-Yau manifolds, quantum cohomology, Gromov-Witten invariants, and the mirror theorem.

Book Synopsis C*-Algebras by Example by : Kenneth R. Davidson
Download or read book C*-Algebras by Example written by Kenneth R. Davidson and published by American Mathematical Society, Fields Institute. This book was released on 2023-10-04 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of C*-algebras received a dramatic revitalization in the 1970s by the introduction of topological methods through the work of Brown, Douglas, and Fillmore on extensions of C*-algebras and Elliott's use of $K$-theory to provide a useful classification of AF algebras. These results were the beginning of a marvelous new set of tools for analyzing concrete C*-algebras. This book is an introductory graduate level text which presents the basics of the subject through a detailed analysis of several important classes of C*-algebras. The development of operator algebras in the last twenty years has been based on a careful study of these special classes. While there are many books on C*-algebras and operator algebras available, this is the first one to attempt to explain the real examples that researchers use to test their hypotheses. Topics include AF algebras, Bunce–Deddens and Cuntz algebras, the Toeplitz algebra, irrational rotation algebras, group C*-algebras, discrete crossed products, abelian C*-algebras (spectral theory and approximate unitary equivalence) and extensions. It also introduces many modern concepts and results in the subject such as real rank zero algebras, topological stable rank, quasidiagonality, and various new constructions. These notes were compiled during the author's participation in the special year on C*-algebras at The Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences during the 1994–1995 academic year. The field of C*-algebras touches upon many other areas of mathematics such as group representations, dynamical systems, physics, $K$-theory, and topology. The variety of examples offered in this text expose the student to many of these connections. Graduate students with a solid course in functional analysis should be able to read this book. This should prepare them to read much of the current literature. This book is reasonably self-contained, and the author has provided results from other areas when necessary.
Download or read book Mixed Motives written by Marc Levine and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1998 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book combines foundational constructions in the theory of motives and results relating motivic cohomology to more explicit constructions. Prerequisite for understanding the work is a basic background in algebraic geometry. The author constructs and describes a triangulated category of mixed motives over an arbitrary base scheme. Most of the classical constructions of cohomology are described in the motivic setting, including Chern classes from higher $K$-theory, push-forward for proper maps, Riemann-Roch, duality, as well as an associated motivic homology, Borel-Moore homology and cohomology with compact supports.
Book Synopsis A Course in Metric Geometry by : Dmitri Burago
Download or read book A Course in Metric Geometry written by Dmitri Burago and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2022-01-27 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Metric geometry” is an approach to geometry based on the notion of length on a topological space. This approach experienced a very fast development in the last few decades and penetrated into many other mathematical disciplines, such as group theory, dynamical systems, and partial differential equations. The objective of this graduate textbook is twofold: to give a detailed exposition of basic notions and techniques used in the theory of length spaces, and, more generally, to offer an elementary introduction into a broad variety of geometrical topics related to the notion of distance, including Riemannian and Carnot-Carathéodory metrics, the hyperbolic plane, distance-volume inequalities, asymptotic geometry (large scale, coarse), Gromov hyperbolic spaces, convergence of metric spaces, and Alexandrov spaces (non-positively and non-negatively curved spaces). The authors tend to work with “easy-to-touch” mathematical objects using “easy-to-visualize” methods. The authors set a challenging goal of making the core parts of the book accessible to first-year graduate students. Most new concepts and methods are introduced and illustrated using simplest cases and avoiding technicalities. The book contains many exercises, which form a vital part of the exposition.

Helping to orient the reader is the extensive commentary, both mathematical and cultural, by Berndt and Rankin; in particular, they discuss in detail the history, up to the present day, of each mathematical result in the letters. Containing many letters that have never been published before, this book will appeal to those interested in Ramanujan's mathematics as well as those wanting to learn more about the personal side of his life. Ramanujan: Letters and Commentary was selected for the CHOICE list of Outstanding Academic Books for 1996.
Book Synopsis Invitation to Nonlinear Algebra by : Mateusz Michałek
Download or read book Invitation to Nonlinear Algebra written by Mateusz Michałek and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2021-03-05 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear algebra provides modern mathematical tools to address challenges arising in the sciences and engineering. It is useful everywhere, where polynomials appear: in particular, data and computational sciences, statistics, physics, optimization. The book offers an invitation to this broad and fast-developing area. It is not an extensive encyclopedia of known results, but rather a first introduction to the subject, allowing the reader to enter into more advanced topics. It was designed as the next step after linear algebra and well before abstract algebraic geometry. The book presents both classical topics—like the Nullstellensatz and primary decomposition—and more modern ones—like tropical geometry and semidefinite programming. The focus lies on interactions and applications. Each of the thirteen chapters introduces fundamental concepts. The book may be used for a one-semester course, and the over 200 exercises will help the readers to deepen their understanding of the subject.

The author's intent behind the original book was to provide to advanced undergraduate and graudate students an introduction to modern Riemannian geometry that could also serve as a reference. The book begins with an explanation of the fundamental notion of Riemannian geometry. Special emphasis is placed on understandability and readability, to guide students who are new to this area. The remaining chapters deal with various topics in Riemannian geometry, with the main focus on comparison methods and their applications.
Book Synopsis Subfactors and Knots by : Vaughan F. R. Jones
Download or read book Subfactors and Knots written by Vaughan F. R. Jones and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1991 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on a set of lectures presented by the author at the NSF-CBMS Regional Conference, Applications of Operator Algebras to Knot Theory and Mathematical Physics, held at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis in June 1988. The audience consisted of low-dimensional topologists and operator algebraists, so the speaker attempted to make the material comprehensible to both groups. He provides an extensive introduction to the theory of von Neumann algebras and to knot theory and braid groups. The presentation follows the historical development of the theory of subfactors and the ensuing applications to knot theory, including full proofs of some of the major results. The author treats in detail the Homfly and Kauffman polynomials, introduces statistical mechanical methods on knot diagrams, and attempts an analogy with conformal field theory. Written by one of the foremost mathematicians of the day, this book will give readers an appreciation of the unexpected interconnections between different parts of mathematics and physics.
Book Synopsis 4-Manifolds and Kirby Calculus by : Robert E. Gompf
Download or read book 4-Manifolds and Kirby Calculus written by Robert E. Gompf and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2023-08-10 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 1980s, there has been an explosive growth in 4-manifold theory, particularly due to the influx of interest and ideas from gauge theory and algebraic geometry. This book offers an exposition of the subject from the topological point of view. It bridges the gap to other disciplines and presents classical but important topological techniques that have not previously appeared in the literature. Part I of the text presents the basics of the theory at the second-year graduate level and offers an overview of current research. Part II is devoted to an exposition of Kirby calculus, or handlebody theory on 4-manifolds. It is both elementary and comprehensive. Part III offers in-depth treatments of a broad range of topics from current 4-manifold research. Topics include branched coverings and the geography of complex surfaces, elliptic and Lefschetz fibrations, $h$-cobordisms, symplectic 4-manifolds, and Stein surfaces. The authors present many important applications. The text is supplemented with over 300 illustrations and numerous exercises, with solutions given in the book. I greatly recommend this wonderful book to any researcher in 4-manifold topology for the novel ideas, techniques, constructions, and computations on the topic, presented in a very fascinating way. I think really that every student, mathematician, and researcher interested in 4-manifold topology, should own a copy of this beautiful book. —Zentralblatt MATH This book gives an excellent introduction into the theory of 4-manifolds and can be strongly recommended to beginners in this field … carefully and clearly written; the authors have evidently paid great attention to the presentation of the material … contains many really pretty and interesting examples and a great number of exercises; the final chapter is then devoted to solutions of some of these … this type of presentation makes the subject more attractive and its study easier. —European Mathematical Society Newsletter
