This book was released on 1999 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a unique collection of some of the work of Frederick J. Almgren, Jr., the man most noted for defining the shape of geometric variational problems and for his role in founding The Geometry Center. Included in the volume are the following: a summary by Sheldon Chang of the famous 1700 page paper on singular sets of area-minimizing $m$-dimensional surfaces in $Rn$, a detailed summary by Brian White of Almgren's contributions to mathematics, his own announcements of several longer papers, important shorter papers, and memorable expository papers. Almgren's enthusiasm for the subject and his ability to locate mathematically beautiful problems that were "ready to be solved" attracted many students who further expanded the subject into new areas. Many of these former students are now known for the clarity of their expositions and for the beauty of the problems that they work on. As Almgren's former graduate student, wife, and colleague, Professor Taylor has compiled an important volume on an extraordinary mathematician. This collection presents a fine comprehensive view of the man's mathematical legacy

Amitsur on various topics in algebra. The approximately 50 papers in the first volume deal with general ring theory and rings satisfying a polynomial identity. A sampling of topics includes algebras over infinite fields, commutative linear differential operators, a generalization of Hilbert's Nullstellensatz, and central embeddings in semi-simple rings. Two essays on Amitsur's work and a biography also are included. The volume is not indexed. c. Book News Inc.

Book excerpt: Eugene Dynkin is a rare example of a contemporary mathematician who has achieved outstanding results in two quite different areas of research: algebra and probability. In both areas, his ideas constitute an essential part of modern mathematical knowledge and form a basis for further development. Although his last work in algebra was published in 1955, his contributions continue to influence current research in algebra and in the physics of elementary particles. His work in probability is part of both the historical and the modern development of the topic. This volume presents Dynkin's scientific contributions in both areas. Included are Commentary by recognized experts in the corresponding fields who describe the time, place, role, and impact of Dynkin's research and achievements. Biographical notes and the recollections of his students are also featured. This book is jointly published by the AMS and the International Press.

His fundamental, pioneering work reshaped the landscape of mathematical analysis. This volume presents a wide selection from some of Calderon's most influential papers. They range from singular integrals to partial differential equations, from interpolation theory to Cauchy integrals on Lipschitz curves, from inverse problems to ergodic theory. The depth, originality, and historical impact of these works are vividly illustrated by the accompanying commentaries by some of today's leading figures in analysis. In addition, two biographical chapters preface the volume. They discuss Alberto Calderon's early life and his mathematical career.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last four decades, Phillip Griffiths has been a central figure in mathematics. During this time, he made crucial contributions in several fields, including complex analysis, algebraic geometry, and differential systems. His books and papers are distinguished by a remarkably lucid style that invites the reader to understand not only the subject at hand, but also the connections among seemingly unrelated areas of mathematics. Even today, many of Griffiths' papers are used as a standard source on a subject. Another important feature of Griffiths' writings is that they often bring together classical and modern mathematics. The four parts of Selected Works--Analytic Geometry, Algebraic Geometry, Variations of Hodge Structures, and Differential Systems--are organized according to the subject matter and are supplemented by Griffiths' brief, but extremely illuminating, personal reflections on the mathematical content and the times in which they were produced. Griffiths' Selected Works provide the reader with a panoramic view of important and exciting mathematics during the second half of the 20th century.

He connected whole mathematical subjects in entirely new ways and changed the way mathematicians think about geometry, topology, foliations, group theory, dynamical systems, and the way these areas interact. His emphasis on understanding and imagination in mathematical learning and thinking are integral elements of his distinctive legacy. This four-part collection brings together in one place Thurston's major writings, many of which are appearing in publication for the first time. Volumes I–III contain commentaries by the Editors. Volume IV includes a preface by Steven P. Kerckhoff. Volume III contains William Thurston's papers on dynamics and computer science, and papers written for general audiences. Additional miscellaneous papers are also included, such as his 1967 New College undergraduate thesis, which foreshadows his later work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fred Almgren exploited the excess method for proving regularity theorems in the calculus of variations. His techniques yielded Hölder continuous differentiability except for a small closed singular set. In the sixties and seventies Almgren refined and generalized his methods. Between 1974 and 1984 he wrote a 1,700-page proof that was his most ambitious development of his ground-breaking ideas. Originally, this monograph was available only as a three-volume work of limited circulation. The entire text is faithfully reproduced here. This book gives a complete proof of the interior regularity of an area-minimizing rectifiable current up to Hausdorff codimension 2. The argument uses the theory of Q-valued functions, which is developed in detail. For example, this work shows how first variation estimates from squash and squeeze deformations yield a monotonicity theorem for the normalized frequency of oscillation of a Q-valued function that minimizes a generalized Dirichlet integral. The principal features of the book include an extension theorem analogous to Kirszbraun's theorem and theorems on the approximation in mass of nearly flat mass-minimizing rectifiable currents by graphs and images of Lipschitz Q-valued functions. Contents:Basic Properties of Q and Q Valued FunctionsProperties of Dir-Minimizing Q Valued Functions and Tangent Cone Stratification of Mass Minimizing Rectifiable CurrentsApproximation in Mass of Nearly Flat Rectifiable Currents which are Mass Minimizing in Manifolds by Graphs of Lipschitz Q Valued Functions Which Can Be Weakly Nearly Dir MinimizingApproximation in Mass of a Nearly Flat Rectifiable Current Which Is Mass Minimizing in a Manifold by the Image of a Lipschitz Q(Rm+n) Valued Function Defined on a Center ManifoldBounds on the Frequency Functions and the Main Interior Regularity Theorem Readership: Students and researchers dealing with the calculus of variations. Keywords:Regularity;Area-Minimizing Surfaces of Codimension Greater Than One;Multiple-Valued Functions;Currents;Center Manifold;Dirichlet's Integral;Frequency FunctionReviews: “The book closes with a number of appendices which also are of independent interest, and it starts with a beautiful Introduction (16 pages) which contains a 'Summary of the principal themes' by chapters … This work is a monument.” Mathematics Abstracts “Now, thanks to the efforts of editors Jean Taylor and Vladimir Scheffer, Almgren's three-volume, 1700-page typed preprint has been published as a single, attractively typset volume of less than 1000 pages … Perhaps advances in knowledge will eventually make possible a much shorter and more transparent proof of Almgren's theorem. But I suspect that if such a proof is discovered, it will still use the basic approach and many of the tools pioneered by Almgren in this monumental work.” Mathematical Reviews
