Book excerpt: Alan Lapidus's life has been a Zelig-like romp through most of the cultural and political highlights of the recent past. He has popped up as architect for or observer of many of our era's most iconic figures, including Donald Trump, various Mafia big shots, mayors, Aristotle and Jackie Onassis, Bob Guccione, pit bosses, real estate legends, and spies. Everything by Design takes us behind the scenes in Las Vegas, Disney World, Havana, Atlantic City, Moscow, the Amazon rainforest, and New York. Along the way we learn why Mickey Mouse never seems to use the restroom, why the baccarat tables in casinos are always far away from the dice tables, why the CIA wanted him to redesign Havana's main synagogue, and why the tunnels under the Hotel Moskva can't be touched. Everything by Design is a keenly observed social and cultural history of modern America by one of its key shapers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pleasure Island explores the tourism industry in Cuba between 1920 and 1960, as international travel ceased to be primarily a privilege of the wealthy, and incorporated the world's growing middle class. Rosalie Schwartz examines tourists' changing ideas of leisure and recreation, as well as the response of a colonial-era Spanish city turned fleshpot and endless cabaret. The tourism industry mushroomed in and around Havana after 1920, as hundreds of thousands of North Americans transformed the city in collaboration with a local business and political elite. The Depression, exacerbated by a bloody revolution in 1933, plunged the tourism industry into a downward spiral; its steady comeback after World War II, and Mafia-influenced 1950s heyday, ended abruptly when Fidel Castro came to power in 1959. The tourist stream was diverted to Cuba's Caribbean neighbors, where it remains. This work is a history of a very idiosyncratic industry, as well as a study of mass tourism's influence on the behavior, attitudes, and cultures of two politically linked but diverse nations. Rosalie Schwartz is a former lecturer in the Department of History at San Diego State University. She is the author of Across the Rio to Freedom and Lawless Liberators: Political Banditry and Cuban Independence, which won the 1990 Hubert B. Herring Book Award of the Pacific Coast Council on Latin American Studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fund raising in the United States is big business. Some 350,000 nonprofit organizations employ an army of fund raisers, all competing for their share, employing the latest technology in computerized direct mail and telemarketing. The American public is swamped with appeals on behalf of this cause or that, as ever more ambitious financial goals are set. Equally intense are demands on active citizens to staff fund-raising drives; a 1987 survey found that 48 percent of Americans engage in some sort of volunteer work. Popular philanthropy, financed by organized, high-pressure fund raising, is uniquely American. This classic history of fund raising in the United States, first published in 1965, has been out of print for the last twenty-two years despite continuing demand. It covers the role of fund raising from the seventeenth century to the present, with emphasis on mass secular fund raising in the twentieth century (religious fund raising is excluded). It documents techniques and problems that are central to the profession today, as well as events and persons on the cutting edge. As both Cutlip and Schwartz indicate in this new edition, since 1964 the climate for philanthropy has been conditioned by two factors-public policies and public perception. Reduction in federal grants to charities and changes in tax policies have increased the gap between needs and resources. Public perception is also a problem, as the result of rampant scandals. Competition for the philanthropic dollar is keener than ever; but the picture is not all gloomy. Schwartz outlines nine positive trends. Among them is increasing interest in philanthropic studies in many areas of academia, including history, sociology, economics, public policy, behavioral sciences, social work, and American studies. There is also increasing interest overseas, as American approaches to fund raising become an example for other nations.
