Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Traffic Problems of Interurban Electric Railroads: A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Pennsylvania in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Electric railways can be grouped into four main classes - the urban, suburban and interurban systems, and the electrified divisions of steam railroads. The first, and the type earliest established, is the street car line originally operated by horse power, and now by electricity and located in cities and large towns. The system almost always lies within the city limits, and is generally circumscribed by the thickly settled districts. The cars are run at low speeds, making stops at every street intersection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric Railway Engineering To students in technical universities who wish to specialize in the subject of electrical railway engineering and to those who understand the fundamental principles of electrical engineering and are interested in their application to electric railway practice it is hoped that this book may be of value. While it is planned primarily for a senior elective course in a technical university, it does not involve higher mathematics and should therefore be easily understood by the undergraduate reader. The volume does not purport to present any great amount of new material nor principles, but it does gather in convenient form present day theory and practice in all important branches of electric railway engineering. N o apology is deemed necessary for the frequent quotations from technical papers and publications in engineering periodicals, for it is only from the authorities and specialists in particular phases of the profession that the most valuable information can be obtained, and it is believed that a thorough and unprejudiced summary of the best that has been written upon the various aspects of the subject will be most welcome when thus combined into a single volume. The author wishes to express his appreciation of the assistance of Mr. Emrick, instructor in electrical engineering at Purdue University, in preparing illustrations for the book and to those students who by thesis investigations have added to its value. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Side of the Electric Railway: A Paper What steam has been to long-distance travel in replacing the sta e coach and the sail, electricity is in turn to urban travel in rep acing the horse car and the cable road. Later in this pa r I' will indicate the manner in which electricity may sooner or ater realize the best and brightest promises made on behalf of the trans-continental steam railroad, but our first thought is as to electrical travel within towns and cities, and the manner in which it affects social relations, by modifying as with the harlequin wand of transformation all the conditions to which we have heretofore been subjected. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Electric Railway Economics: And Preliminary Engineering Some time prior to the delivery of these lectures a series of hearings was held by the Railroad Commissioners of New York State to consider the application of the New York and Port Chester Railroad Company for a charter, and during this hearing the practicability from both an engineering and com mercial standpoint of interurban high-speed electric railways was fully demonstrated. Although the New York and Port Chester Railroad is not yet in operation, I used considerable of the engineering and other data placed in evidence at this hearing, as well as much other data worked up in developing and demonstrating the commercial and engineering details of of the New York and Port Chester Railroad in the Lehigh University lectures, and have also employed some of the same data in this book. Neither the lectures, or this book, were or are given as a treatise or exhaustive treatment of the subject as a whole, or of the details as indicated in the chapter headings. The lectures were intended to point the way, and embody some of the results of twelve years of practice and application. This book is presented with the same object in View. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Electric Railway in Theory and Practice In pursuing this policy we hope and believe that our sins will be found to be those of omission rather than commission, and that the reader will deal gently with them, as well-nigh unavoidable in this first general discussion of a new and important branch of applied science. Our hearty thanks are due to the many friends who have most courteously aided us in the preparation of this volume by freely giving information of every sort, and particularly to Prof. Elihu Thomson, Mr. Carl Hering, Mr. W. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric Railway Transportation Many books have been published on electric railway engineering but none until this, we believe, purely on the transportation methods and practice of electric railways. Nevertheless, the men engaged in the transportation department of an electric railway greatly exceed in number those in the engineering department, and the opportunities for financial loss through faulty practice are at least as large if not larger. Most of the accounts of electric railway transportation practice which are mentioned in this book have appeared in the transactions of the American Electric Railway Transportation & Traffic Association or in the columns of the electric railway press. The efforts of the authors of the present volume have been devoted to making this information more readily available in book form and adding such comment of their own as seemed to them of possible help to the operating man. A word of explanation and caution to the reader in regard to the methods of different companies, as described in the following pages, is necessary. The conditions on the different properties change often, due to legislative enactments, changes in wages paid, altered demands of the public and other causes. For this reason it is probable that when this book reaches the hands of its readers some of the methods described therein as employed by individual companies will have been radically altered or even abandoned. Such a condition is, of course, unavoidable in any developing industry. It ought not of itself to impair the value of the book to the average reader if the latter looks upon its pages not as a record of unchanging practice but as descriptive of some of the methods employed by different companies at the time that the book was written. A word ought to be said also in regard to the examples cited of practice followed by the different companies. The book is intended in no way to be a compilation of the practice of all companies on the subjects treated. Many companies may be using the same methods as those whose practice is quoted, and in some cases another company may have been the pioneer in the plan followed. The authors have mentioned the examples given in the book in most cases because they happened to be personally acquainted with the methods or because information about them could be more easily obtained. The references to European tramway practice relate to the period before the war. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
