Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to study the influence of moderate to vigorous physical activity, directly before literacy class, on the motivational levels of sixth grade students. This research project was conducted over an eight week period using one 6th grade class at Prairie Creek Intermediate School. The homeroom time immediately prior to a literacy class was used for 20 minute exercise sessions three days per week. Subject motivation levels were monitored through both literacy teacher and student interviews. Subjects were interviewed on their motivation levels in the literacy classroom. Observations of subjects in the literacy classroom were used to gain information on their motivation levels in the literacy class; anecdotal notes were taken during observations. Results from this study show a correlation between academic motivation and exercise. Continued research is needed to determine if the data represented the general population.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to determine if the use of moderate to vigorous physical activity prior to literacy class would have any affects on the motivation levels of fourth grade students in literacy class. The study was conducted over an eight week period during the fall semester of the 2011-2012 school year. The study utilized a general education fourth grade class at Prairie Heights Elementary School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Physical education (PE) was attended by this class once every four days, as the school schedule allowed. Students participated in activities aimed to keep the students' heart rates up in their healthy zones for 20-30 minutes during PE class. The treatment group then attended literacy class immediately after PE class. An interview with the fourth grade literacy teacher was conducted prior to the study to gain knowledge on the current motivation levels of the fourth grade students. Anecdotal notes were taken by the researcher both in PE class and in literacy class. Observations were made with a checklist by both the researcher and the literacy teacher during literacy class on days when literacy followed PE. At the conclusion of the eight week study, interviews were conducted with the students to gain information on their motivation levels in literacy class. A follow up interview was also conducted with the literacy teacher to note any changes or information obtained during the study. The results of this study indicate the possibility of growth in motivation levels in fourth grade students during literacy class when literacy class followed moderate to vigorous physical activity. Further research is needed to determine if the conclusions of this study would be applicable to a generalized population.

Book excerpt: Comprehension is a vital requirement for every student as he or she progresses through school, and a student's motivation to read can directly affect comprehension skills. Many strategies are used to increase reading comprehension across grade levels. At a suburban middle school in the Midwest, 67 students in three sixth-grade reading classes participated in a study to determine if the use of literature circles would increase reading comprehension as well as student motivation to read. Students were taught how to operate and participate in literature circle discussions with various readings. They were then divided into groups, and each group was given a different novel to read and discuss within literature circles. Comprehension was assessed by studying student journal response entries while motivation was assessed by comparing survey results. Using the aforementioned assessments, a slight gain in comprehension was recorded, but results varied for the use of literature circles affecting motivation to read. Keywords: comprehension, reading, motivation, middle school.

Book excerpt: The focus of this study was to examine the effects of physical activity on student academic achievement in sixth-grade mathematics. The research was performed on fourteen sixth grade students enrolled at Buford Garner Elementary School in North Liberty, Iowa. The fourteen students were split into two groups, each containing seven students of similar academic performance levels. The treatment group of participants was assigned an individual daily five-minute interval of aerobic exercise (waling, jogging, or a combination of the two) during the school day, outside of mathematical instructional time. The comparative group of students received the same core and differentiated instruction as the treatment group, but lacked the extra five-minute interval of daily aerobic exercise. Research participants were evaluated on their academic performances during the instruction of two math units. Students were given pre assessments, post assessments and teacher-made student surveys intended to indicate confidence and comfort level with the concepts taught. Over an eight-week period of collecting and analyzing student performances on assessments and surveys, data showed a positive correlation linking increased physical activity to increase achievement in the area of mathematics.

Book excerpt: There is currently a lack of research aimed at determining the boredom level experienced by sixth grade students participating in an accelerated math class, as well as suitable strategies aimed at helping students avoid it. This quantitative quasi-experimental static-group comparison study investigated boredom levels with the implementation of Contract Activity Packages (CAPs), a strategy specifically related to combatting boredom for gifted and talented students, into a sixth-grade accelerated math class. Data were collected from 138 sixth-grade students participating in an accelerated math class via the boredom scale of the Achievement Emotions Questionnaire -- Mathematics (AEQ-M) and analyzed using a two-way analysis of variance and a one-way analysis of variance. Results showed that there were no statistically significant differences in the boredom levels of sixth-grade students participating in an accelerated math class who received and did not receive CAPs, regardless of gender or giftedness. These results imply that the use of CAPs might not be a suitable strategy to use in order to prevent the presence of boredom in the classroom setting, or that the CAPs were not effectively designed. Thus, more research in this particular field of education is recommended.

Book excerpt: "The research question addressed in this project was, how can supported independent reading increase motivation, engagement and achievement in sixth grade striving readers? The capstone details supported independent reading and how beneficial it can be in impacting students' motivation, engagement and achievement in their reading achievement. The study integrated teacher support, student choice, conferencing, feedback, and collaboration. After finding related research, the author studied the reading motivation, engagement and achievement of sixth grade striving readers for four months. Although there were limitations and areas to improve in future studies, results showed increase in reading motivation and achievement in most of the students in the study." --

Book excerpt: This purpose of this study was to examine the effects of cognitively engaging exercise, aerobic exercise, and resting conditions on the executive function of 6th graders. Four conditions were tested: cognitively engaging exercise, repetitive aerobic exercise, cognitively engaging rest, and rest. Executive function was measured by pre and post Stroop tests, which is a test of reaction time and inhibition. Results showed no significant differences between conditions in the choice reaction time test, however the cognitively engaging exercise was significantly different from all other conditions on the Stroop test.
