Book excerpt: This study explored the relationship between test anxiety and academic performance, as well as how cannabis affected this relationship. The importance of academic achievement is often a burden and a source of anxiety for many students. The current study hypothesized that test anxiety is negatively correlated with academic performance. It was also hypothesized that cannabis mitigates the negative effects of high test anxiety on academic performance. We additionally hypothesized that when cannabis is abused, it can be potentially more detrimental to one’s academic performance, resulting in a lower GPA. Participants consisted of 95 college students aged 18 to 22 at the University of Hartford. Well-established scales and questionnaires were used to measure academic performance, test anxiety, and cannabis use. The results of the study did not show any significance in the relationship between test anxiety and academic performance. It also did not show any significant impact of cannabis on this relationship. On the other hand, the findings potentially highlighted the need to develop guidelines or programs to help college students navigate test anxiety and access alternative resources. In addition, the findings potentially highlighted the need for psychoeducational services regarding cannabis use, as well as education around the various clinical services available for college students struggling with cannabis use. Continuous research on cannabis use would help us understand the impact this substance has on anxiety and academic performance. Continuous steps towards legalization of medical and recreational cannabis use will increase opportunities for such research.

Many of the strategies we highlight emerge from a constructivist view of learning that has gained widespread acceptance in recent years. In this view, learners make sense of the world by forging connections between new ideas and those that are part of their existing knowledge base. For most students, that knowledge base is riddled with a host of naïve notions, misconceptions and alternative conceptions they have acquired throughout their lives. To a considerable extent, the job of the teacher is to coax out these ideas; to help students understand how their ideas differ from the scientifically accepted view; to assist as students restructure and reconcile their newly acquired knowledge; and to provide opportunities for students to evaluate what they have learned and apply it in novel circumstances. Book excerpt: Increasing numbers of community college students self-identify as having mental health issues, which negatively impact their academic performance. This study explored the relationship between mental health conditions and academic performance; the relationship between mental health conditions and physical and emotional well-being; and the impact of mental health interventions. The research setting was a large, urban, public community college in the San Francisco Bay Area with an annual enrollment of 19,000 students. Data from the ACHA-NCHA II survey, conducted in 2013, 2016, and 2018, were examined with a total of 2,562 full-time and part-time students. Chi-Square Test of Independence, ordinal logistic regression, and logistic regression were used to analyze the data. The results indicated that there is a statistically significant relationship between anxiety, depression, and stress and academic performance and on student well-being and overall health as well. Additionally, there is a statistically significant relationship between students' well-being, academic performance, mental health conditions, and counseling participation in the college's mental health center. The results were reviewed for differences between students' ethnicity, gender, and age. This study revealed that, while students of color experience mental health conditions at similar rates as White students, they are less likely to seek treatment. Moreover, students of color are more likely to experience basic need insecurity, healthcare disparities, institutionalized racism, and the stigma associated with struggling with impaired mental health. Recommendations include implementing a mental health equity framework, increased outreach efforts to reduce stigma, and creating an inclusive and supportive campus climate for students of color.

Book excerpt: Considering the importance of academic achievement for students, parents, teachers and the community, finding the appropriate and right techniques to prevent low academic achievement is indispensable. Based on the result of this study, depression and test-anxiety have the relationship with low academic achievement among high school students. In other words, students who have depression and test-anxiety are likely to drop out from school. Hence, methods of controlling depression and test-anxiety must be devised in order to reduce the students' dropout rate and increase their academic achievement. The findings from the present study reveal that students with test-anxiety and depression have low academic performance. Thus, it is recommended that the Iranian Ministry of Education support and encourage the establishment of counseling centers in high schools, where counselors and clinical psychologists can help students to treat mental and academic problems. Also, it is suggested that the Ministry of Education should encourage workshops and seminars to guide students on study techniques in order to motivate and increase their ability to control test-anxiety and depression.
