Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of articles by officers of the Indian Army records the contributions of the Army to natural history over a period of more than two hundred years. It builds on the premise that the study of the Indian subcontinent's natural history was more or less the exclusive preserve of these officers. Beginning with the fading years of the eighteenth century, the natural history-inclined officers of the Indian Army studied the flora and fauna, particularly the fauna, in their leisure hours and became experts on it. Their findings were recorded in various journals in the U.K., and after 1886 mainly in the Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society. A valuable feature of this book is a pamphlet (the twenty-fifth article in the collection) sent to the Indian Government by the Army through the Society by Lieutenant Colonel Burton, which drew the attention of the former to the dire need to conserve the country's wildlife, and in due course saw the formation of the Indian Board for Wildlife. The book is thus a tribute to this remarkable aspect of the Indian Army which, apart from fighting in the field, fought a battle to conserve the country's wonderful and almost incomparable natural heritage spread over a zoogeographical area over thirty degrees of latitude encompassing almost every type of climate met with in the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ladakh in the northwestern trans-Himalayan region is a land of rich biodiversity. It has remained closed to visitors for many years. Yet, during recent years, tourism has 'discovered' the land of scenic landscapes, unspoiled nature, and hospitable people. Due to its isolation and inaccessibility, serious research on Ladakh's fauna has started only recently. This book is a complete inventory of all bird and mammal species in the Ladakh region. It describes and illustrates the numerous species of birds and mammals, including their local names, alternative names, habitat, behaviour, status, and distribution. A total of 305 bird species has been reported from the Ladakh region, of which 34 species have not been sighted after 1960. Similarly, two of the 33 mammal species have not been seen for some time. Ladakh, like any other cold desert in the world, is a fragile ecosystem that can be easily spoiled by unimaginative planning and uncontrolled tourism. This book gives practical and specific suggestions on how to conserve the ecosystem and enjoy the region's beauty without destroying it.

Book excerpt: "This volume features a collection of twenty essays that looks at the position and 'construction' of 'woman' in history, politics, literature, art, and in society as a whole. It reveals how gender identities mesh with societal norms, and depicts women's struggles and achievements in their negotiations of the deeply ingrained structures of patriarchy. This anthology provides the reader with new critical perspectives of what is usually considered normal and given. Foregrounding socio-cultural mores and voicing shared concerns and visions, the authors analyze the condition of women in the past and in present times. The essays, divided into six sections, throw light on a spectrum of aspects of Women's Studies that display a distinct level of interdisciplinary scholarship."--Back cover.

Book excerpt: Rapid depletion and degradation of species in diverse ecosystems and the implications of this for human welfare have the cause for increasing concern. Biodiversity or variability among living organisms and the ecological complexes of which they are a part, is essential for ensuring the basic ecological services and resources necessary for sustaining human welfare. The loss of biodiversity is therefore, considered one of the most serious problem threatening the world today. An understanding of the ecological implications of the increasing loss of bodiversity, not to mention of the economic implications, has therefore, became vital. A biodiversity loss is irreversible. A calls for increased caution in our efforts to convert and exploit natural resources. Some minimal level of biodiversity is necessary to main ecological functioning, which in turn is necessary for generating the biological resources on which human welfare depends. Needless to emphasive that substantial biodiversity loss occurs due to forest clearing and degradation, leading to the need for assessing biodiversity in different ecosystems. Keeping these aspects in mind, the present volume highlights biodiversity in different cropping systems besides that the impact of cold and hot deserts. Selection of the topics in the various chapters is essentially because of the experience of the authors in the field of biodiversity.

This book was released on 2020-02-26 with total page 1100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Himalaya, a global biodiversity hotspot, sustains about one-fifth of the humankind. Nestled within the north-western mountain ranges of the Himalaya, the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) State harbours more than half of the biodiversity found in the Indian Himalaya. The wide expanse of State, spread across the subtropical Jammu, through the temperate Kashmir valley, to the cold arid Ladakh, is typical representative of the extensive elevational and topographical diversity encountered in the entire Himalaya. This book, the most comprehensive and updated synthesis ever made available on biodiversity of the J&K State, is a valuable addition to the biodiversity literature with global and regional relevance. The book, arranged into 7 parts, comprises of 42 chapters contributed by 87 researchers, each of whom is an expert in his/her own field of research. The precious baseline data contained in the book would form the foundation for assessing current status of knowledge about the bioresources, identify the knowledge gaps, and help prioritization of conservation strategies to steer the sustainable use of biodiversity in this Himalayan region. Given the breadth of topics covered under the banner of biodiversity in this book, it can surely serve as a model for documentation of biodiversity in other regions of the world. The book will be of immense value to all those who, directly or indirectly, have to deal with biodiversity, including students, teachers, researchers, naturalists, environmentalists, resource managers, planners, government agencies, NGOs and the general public at large.
