Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Astrophysical Journal, 1900, Vol. 11 The small nebula H I, 55 Pegasi (G. C. 4892) is not in itself very remarkable, as compared with many other objects of the same class, but considerable interest attaches to it on account of the diverse forms which have been ascribed to it by different observers. Herschel describes this nebula as pretty bright; irregularly round; resolvable; elongated between two stars; containing two or three stars. In another observation it is described as much elongated, its length being 2'.1 and its breadth 30." The drawing shows a narrow, spindle-shaped nebula, which accords with this description. D'Arrest's drawing much resembles that of Herschel, but the width of the nebula is greater, and the condensation toward the center is shown. The conventionalized, lozenge-shaped outline gives the drawing a somewhat unnatural appearance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Essential Astrophysics by : Kenneth R. Lang
Download or read book Essential Astrophysics written by Kenneth R. Lang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-05-24 with total page 635 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essential Astrophysics is a book to learn or teach from, as well as a fundamental reference volume for anyone interested in astronomy and astrophysics. It presents astrophysics from basic principles without requiring any previous study of astronomy or astrophysics. It serves as a comprehensive introductory text, which takes the student through the field of astrophysics in lecture-sized chapters of basic physical principles applied to the cosmos. This one-semester overview will be enjoyed by undergraduate students with an interest in the physical sciences, such as astronomy, chemistry, engineering or physics, as well as by any curious student interested in learning about our celestial science. The mathematics required for understanding the text is on the level of simple algebra, for that is all that is needed to describe the fundamental principles. The text is of sufficient breadth and depth to prepare the interested student for more advanced specialised courses in the future. Astronomical examples are provided throughout the text, to reinforce the basic concepts and physics, and to demonstrate the use of the relevant formulae. In this way, the student learns to apply the fundamental equations and principles to cosmic objects and situations. Astronomical and physical constants and units as well as the most fundamental equations can be found in the appendix. Essential Astrophysics goes beyond the typical textbook by including references to the seminal papers in the field, with further reference to recent applications, results, or specialised literature.

Book Synopsis Stellar Collapse by : Chris L. Fryer
Download or read book Stellar Collapse written by Chris L. Fryer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-04-30 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supernovae, hypernovae and gamma-ray bursts are among the most energetic explosions in the universe. The light from these outbursts is, for a brief time, comparable to billions of stars and can outshine the host galaxy within which the explosions reside. Most of the heavy elements in the universe are formed within these energetic explosions. Surprisingly enough, the collapse of massive stars is the primary source of not just one, but all three of these explosions. As all of these explosions arise from stellar collapse, to understand one requires an understanding of the others. Stellar Collapse marks the first book to combine discussions of all three phenomena, focusing on the similarities and differences between them. Designed for graduate students and scientists newly entering this field, this book provides a review not only of these explosions, but the detailed physical models used to explain them from the numerical techniques used to model neutrino transport and gamma-ray transport to the detailed nuclear physics behind the evolution of the collapse to the observations that have led to these three classes of explosions.
