Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Astrophysical Journal, 1900, Vol. 11 The small nebula H I, 55 Pegasi (G. C. 4892) is not in itself very remarkable, as compared with many other objects of the same class, but considerable interest attaches to it on account of the diverse forms which have been ascribed to it by different observers. Herschel describes this nebula as pretty bright; irregularly round; resolvable; elongated between two stars; containing two or three stars. In another observation it is described as much elongated, its length being 2'.1 and its breadth 30." The drawing shows a narrow, spindle-shaped nebula, which accords with this description. D'Arrest's drawing much resembles that of Herschel, but the width of the nebula is greater, and the condensation toward the center is shown. The conventionalized, lozenge-shaped outline gives the drawing a somewhat unnatural appearance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Astrophysical Journal, Vol. 12: An International Review of Spectroscopy and Astronomical Physics; June-December, 1900 The Yale apparatus consists of a wheel (a bicycle wheel) rotating in front of the cameras and carrying a number of Opaque screens. There are at present 12 of these interceptors and the rotation is effected at the rate of 30 to 50 turns a minute by means of a small motor worked by 3 or 4 bichromate cells. It will be advisable to increase the number of occultations in future, however. At each revolution a record is made on the Chronograph, so that the wheel's velocity at any instant is always known. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Astrophysical Journal, 1899, Vol. 10 The value adopted for a, the semi - axis major of the Earth's orbit, is based upon as the solar parallax; an error of in this constant corresponds to a maximum error of kilometers per second in the correction to an observed velocity. Had a different parallax been employed the only effect upon these tables would have been the addition of a constant to each log b. For I', the Sun's longitude at perigee, the round value 281° 20' has been employed; this is about its value for 1950, referred however to the equinox of 1900. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Astrophysical Journal, 1901, Vol. 14 Let.us consider two arcs which are alike except that a larger current runs through the first than through the second. Since the secondary causes of radiation go hand in hand with the electrical cause, we may expect the first arc to have a spectrum which is uniformly brighter from one end to the other than that of the second arc. With the exception of a slight variation, probably due to conduction losses, this is just what is always observed, and confirms the secondary character of the Chemical and thermal causes of radiation. If these causes were not dependent upon the electrical causes, we might possibly get an arc which would give only a flame spectrum, or an arc which would give only a Spark spectrum. Let us now suppose that we run the same current through both the similar arcs, and suppose that in some way we reduce the chemical action going on in the second arc. What differ ence may we expect to observe in them? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Astrophysical Journal, Vol. 28: An International Review of Spectroscopy and Astronomical Physics; July-December, 1908 The spectral lines were photographed by means of a 21-foot con cave grating with a fixed circular camera. The light consisted of a spark of the substance which had been dried upon thin carbon plates and so placed in a strong magnetic field that the spark was parallel to the lines of force.1 Owing to the varying intensity of the difierent lines photographs were taken with difierent lengths of exposure, vary ing from fifteen minutes to two hours in the violet up to six hours in the red. The photographs were all taken with the pole pieces at the same distance apart, so that by varying the current on the electro magnetic circuit one could obtain ad libitum any field-strength up to the maximum of lines per sq. Cm. The field-strength was determined by repeated measurements of the separation of the calcium line which occurs on account of an impurity in the carbon electrode, and by a few Special photographs of the zinc line 4680, assuming Runge's measurements for these lines at C. G. S. Units to be correct. All calculations are given at the above maximum field-strength. Other field-strengths were used to determine the true components of lines very close together or to obtain readings for over lapping components. Frequently such lines are determined from the distance of the one free component from the undisturbed position. Photographs of vibrations parallel to the lines of force were taken upon one set of plates, and perpendicular to the lines of force upon another set of plates. This was efiected in the usual way by means of a calcite prism. Photographs taken without the calcite, i. E., with both the parallel and perpendicular components on one set of plates. The complete development of the subject would be foreign to the purpose of the present paper, but it seems necessary to summarize the data and formulae in such a way that they can be readily applied. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Astrophysical Journal, Vol. 51: An International Review of Spectroscopy and Astronomical Physics; January-June, 1920 The briefness of the time available for preliminary tests was unfortunate in one respect. Owing to the very low altitude of the sun (only twenty minutes after sunrise) when the eclipse took place, the refraction of the terrestrial atmosphere was continually changing at the time, so that the apparent motion of the sun in the sky was at a variable rate, not agreeing with that which pre vailed later in the day. A test of the clock was made on the day preceding the eclipse, but owing to cloudiness it was not possible to follow quite up to the time of the eclipse. Such observations as were made on the preceding day, however, indicated that the clockwork moved a little too Slowly and so the rate of the clock was increased about 3 per cent with the expectation of more exactly following the sun at the time of the eclipse. Unfortunately this proved to be too much of a correction so that the clock moved a little too fast during the eclipse, and the images of the moon are not as truly round as they should be.
