Here may be found valuable evidence concerning the work of painters, engravers, and early craftsmen not to be discovered elsewhere: - the work of the artist, the announcement of the recently completed engraving, the advertisement of the silversmith and the cabinetmaker, the shopkeepers description of his stock of burnt-china and earthenware received in the last ships from England and Holland, the list of household goods and furniture to be sold at public vendue, the clockmaker's advertisement of his stock, the amazing list of fabrics offered for sale in the shops - all this and much more lies buried in the files of the early newspapers. Much of the value of this material will be found to exist in the exact knowledge it supplies of the productions of the arts and crafts at a known date and from these facts may be drawn deductions of real value to the antiquary and the artist. The earliest newspapers printed in New England contained few advertisements and it was not until after 1720 that they increased in number and became more varied in character. While examining SPNEA in the context of progressivism, Preserving Historic New England focuses on its redefinition of preservation to fit the methodology of science, the economy of capitalism, and the aestheticism of architecture.
