Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Armies of India It will readily be believed that I have read this short history of the Armies of India, written by Major MacMunn and illustrated by Major Lovett, with the greatest interest. Having spent so many eventful years of my life in India, and having been so intimately associated with the Indian Army, in peace and war, I think that no one is better able than myself to esteem that Army at its proper value, as regards what it has - with the help of British training and example - achieved in the past, or to appreciate what it is capable of doing in the future under the same conditions. And this intimate knowledge of its capabilities enables me to realize to the fullest extent the enormous responsibility which rests upon all who are concerned with the administration and handling of such a splendid and potent machine. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indian Corps in France I AM not at all clear why an Introduction should be needed to this important and thrilling narrative of the deeds of the Indian Corps in France in the early days of the Great War, in addition to the excellent Preface which has already been contributed by the Authors. Still less is it clear Why a remote spectator should have been urged to undertake the task. It can only be because a former Viceroy must have enjoyed many opportunities during his term of. Office in India of making the acquaintance and realizing the superb qualities of the Indian Army, that he should be invited, Or would consent - as I have willingly done - to join in this tribute to their latest achievement. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With the Indians in France I have not attempted to write a Military History of the Indian Army Corps in France. I lay no claim to describing the course of events on the British Front, as a Whole, during 1914 - 15, except in as far as they concern the Corps. The excellent account written by lieut.-colonel Merewether, Indian Army, and Sir Frederick Smith, Bart. (the Indian Corps in France, published by John Murray), both of Whom served on my Staff as Recording Officers on behalf of the India and War Offices, and who have had at their disposal all the official records, furnishes ample details of the movements and the doings of the Corps as forming an integral part of the British Army in Flanders. I have not had the advantages of papers of reference, nor have I seen all the diaries of the various Commanders and others, and have had the handicap of writing most of my story far removed from England; but it must be borne in mind that a great part of their information was naturally derived from my own reports and correspondence, and of nearly all such I kept copies, and have used them. If, therefore, in some cases our descriptions of military events appear somewhat similar the reason will be readily understood. Also I kept a very careful Diary from day to day which has enabled me to write with certainty of the events recorded. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vignettes From Indian Wars Wars must pass into perspective and drift behind the mists Of time, and loss and remembrance must have been softened, before their story and their romance can be enjoyed. The many smaller wars which accompanied the Great War will grow in romance and interest as the years roll by, to Which their Eastern setting will lend more colour. But though no war like the last and no side-campaigns on so great a scale have occurred before, yet this Island kingdom, this Swan's nest in a pool has more than once poured forth its armies from homestead and manor and city. In the Napoleonic wars, the British army was flung to the four quarters Of the world, and the East even then added its glamour to the story, while our Eastern Empire and dependencies owe much Of their increase to the impetus which the hostility Of the French engendered. It would be gratifying to the Editor to introduce their names in this notice, but as their assistance was not given with a view to public thanks, he imagines this general acknowledgment of their kindness will be more acceptable to them than a particular specification of their several favours and his obligations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Times of Peril: A Tale of India Their mother had sailed for England with Dick, the youngest, but had died soon after she reached home. Dick had a passion for the sea, and his father's relations, having good interest, had obtained for him a berth as a midshipman in the royal navy, in which rank he had been serving for upward of a year. His ship being now in Indian waters, a month's leave had been granted him that he might go up the country $9 see his father. The other lad had arrived from England three months before with his sister and cousin. Major Warrener had sent for his daughter, whose education was finished, to take the head of his house, and, as a companion, had invited Rose Hertford, who was the orphan child of his sister, to accompany her. Ned, who had been at West minster till he left England, was intended for the Indian army. His father thought that it would be well for him to come out to India with his sister, as he himself would work with him, and complete his education, to enable him to pass the necessary examination - then not a very severe one - while he could be at the same time learning the native languages, which couldibe of immense benefit to him after he had entered the army. Coming out as they had done in the cold season, none of the four ex hibited any of that pallor and lassitude which, at any rate during the summer beats, are the rule throughout the anglo-indian community. As Ned finished his sentence the sound of the tread of two horses was heard along the road. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The sad plight of the Five Civilized Tribes the Cherokee, Choctaw, Creek (Muscogee), and Seminole during America s Civil War is both fascinating and often overlooked in the literature. From 1861-1865, the Indians fought their own bloody civil war on lands surrounded by the Kansas Territory, Arkansas, and Texas. Clint Crowe s magisterial Caught in the Maelstrom: The Indian Nations in the Civil War reveals the complexity and the importance of this war within a war, and explains how it affected the surrounding states in the Trans-Mississippi West and the course of the broader war engulfing the country. The onset of the Civil War exacerbated the divergent politics of the five tribes and resulted in the Choctaw and Chickasaw contributing men for the Confederacy and the Seminoles contributing men for the Union. The Creeks were divided between the Union and the Confederacy, while the internal war split apart the Cherokee nation mostly between those who followed Stand Watie, a brigadier general in the Confederate Army, and John Ross, who threw his majority support behind the Union cause. Throughout, Union and Confederate authorities played on divisions within the tribes to further their own strategic goals by enlisting men, signing treaties, encouraging bloodshed, and even using the hard hand of war to turn a profit. Crowe s well-written study is grounded upon a plethora of archival resources, newspapers, diaries, letter collections, and other accounts. Caught in the Maelstrom examines every facet of this complex and fascinating story in a manner sure to please the most demanding reader."
