Book excerpt: A tagging project for snow crab Chionoecetes opilio was conducted in two distinct areas of the eastern Bering Sea in July and August 2005 aboard the FV "Bella K". The southern area, comprised of 42 stations northwest of the Pribilof Islands, encompassed the sector between 58°00' - 59°20' N latitude and 170°20' - 173°43' W longitude. The northern area, comprised of 8 stations northwest of St. Matthew Island, encompassed the sector between 60°40' - 61°20' N latitude and 174°49'- 175°41' W longitude. A total of 50 stations and 450 pots were fished, resulting in a total catch of 55,150 male snow crabs. A total of 8,436 large, legal male snow crabs were tagged.

Book excerpt: Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) deployed 140 pop-up satellite tags and 1,441 spaghetti tags on large male Tanner crab (≥127 mm carapace width) in 5 areas near the Pribilof Islands to investigate seasonal movements relative to the Pribilof Islands blue king crab protection area (PIBKCPA). Most satellite tags (n = 132) were programed to release to the ocean surface and transmit data between December 2019 and mid-January 2020 (~3.0-4.5 months at liberty); 8 tags were programmed to release on April 1, 2020 (7 months at liberty). Tag pop-up locations (crab end locations) and associated error ellipses were estimated using Argos satellite data derived from tag transmissions following release from the host crab. For satellite-tagged crab with the most reliable estimates of end location (n = 82), point estimates and plausible ranges were calculated for distance, rate, and direction of horizontal straight-line displacement over 90-146 days. Average (± 95% CI) straight-line horizontal movement rate of satellite-tagged crab with reliable end locations was 0.116 ± 0.027 km/d. A description of the objectives, study area, tagging and sampling methodologies, data analysis methods, and reporting guidelines is given. Preliminary studies conducted 2017–2018 in the lab and pilot deployments of 24 pop-up satellite tags on Tanner crab in the Bering Sea are described and results reported. The 16-day tagging project will be conducted by Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) biologists aboard the chartered 156 ft (47.5 m) vessel, P/V Stimson during August and September 2019 around the Pribilof Islands. One-hundred-forty (140) pop-up satellite tags and approximately 2,000 spaghetti tags will be deployed on adult male Tanner crab (industry-preferred size: ≥5 in, 127 mm carapace width) captured inside and outside of the Pribilof Islands blue king crab protection area (PIBKCPA) to investigate seasonal movements relative to the area’s boundary. Most satellite tags (132) will be programed to release from crab to the ocean surface and transmit data within a 6-week timeframe from 1 December 2019 to 15 January 2020 (~3–4.5 months at liberty) and the remaining 8 tags will release on 1 April 2020 (~7 months at liberty). Tag pop-up locations (crab end locations) will be estimated using in-situ drift vectors of transmitting tags and Argos-reported positional error. Spaghetti tags will be recovered during the 2019/20 Bering Sea Tanner crab fishery, if prosecuted. Straight-line horizontal displacements of tagged crab (distance, direction, and movement rate) will be evaluated relative to the PIBKCPA boundary.

Book excerpt: This is the first paper to present data characterizing the composition of commercial populations of snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) in the northern part of the Sea of Okhotsk and western Bering Sea with the use of a new paradigm, the existence of a terminal moult in male crabs, the concept of morphometric maturity. The effect of the terminal moult on the size/age composition of snow crab populations is discussed, and a new interpretation of certain data believed to contradict this paradigm is proposed.
