Book excerpt: After the COVID 19 pandemic came to the United States in March 2020, teachers and educational leaders looked to virtual learning as a way for students to overcome learning challenges and improve educational experiences for students. Stakeholders were met with conflicting claims about virtual learning. Proponents of virtual learning claimed virtual teaching and learning platforms strengthened education because they provided additional tools when traditional classroom settings were impossible. Opponents claimed virtual learning resulted in learning loss, therefore failing to improve student learning. In this qualitative interpretive study of a rural school system in Tennessee, using instrumental, semi-structured interviews, I uncovered the perceptions teachers had about student learning environments as a result of virtual learning. The purpose of this study was to determine teachers’ perceptions of virtual learning and students’ emotional health, students’ motivation to learn, students’ personalized instruction, students’ classroom performance, and students’ learning loss in a virtual learning environment. In 24 interviews, teachers in this rural district desired fewer technology gaps, assistance with managing student engagement and attendance, ways to improve missed instruction, and increased training, support, and professional developments in virtual learning.

In 2020, school systems across the United States began offering virtual learning options for their students after the onset of the Coronavirus-19 pandemic. Historically, researchers investigated virtual learning related to student academic success and student experiences and did not focus studies on virtual instructional planning. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of virtual learning on the instructional planning process based on the perceptions of 18 elementary school teachers in one rural Northeast Tennessee school district. After analyzing the responses for all 18 participants, I discovered virtual learning influenced the amount of time it took rural elementary school teachers to plan for instruction, the quality of assignments planned for students, and the need for relevant professional development.

Book excerpt: This mixed methodology study explored the virditional course model developed at an 1850-student high school in south central Pennsylvania. The virditional model is an online learning environment that combines aspects of the traditional classroom setting with an online learning environment. It differs from hybrid online learning environments in that the students meet daily with their online instructor, and they engage in face to face lessons as part of their online learning experience; students in hybrid online courses meet less frequently with their instructors. The researcher gathered data to determine the effectiveness of the virditional model. Data were gathered via a) surveys, b) interviews, c) observations, and d) document reviews. The subjects included a) current students, b) graduated students, and c) two virditional teachers. The current students and teachers were observed in both their physical classroom and their online learning environment. The graduated students participated in surveys. The teachers were also interviewed. Document reviews were conducted to examine the site-produced literature and the course access logs. Findings of the study showed that students exhibited a high level of satisfaction with their virditional courses, and they appreciated the ability to work at their own pace while meeting general deadlines. They also reported that their technology skills improved as a result of their participation in the virditional environment. The teachers' perceptions reinforced the students' perceptions. These findings offer guidance to educators who wish to implement some form of hybrid online learning to their students, particularly for those who wish to offer the virditional environment in other settings.

The purpose of this study was to address the following three components: (a) to identify the teacher perceptions of the impact of online learning strategies on student engagement, (b) to identify the teacher perceptions of effective instructional strategies in online learning, and (c) to examine the impact that professional development has had on the use of effective instructional strategies in online learning. Thirty teachers from a cyber charter school completed and returned a researcher constructed survey. Six of the survey participants engaged in a focus group and the researcher conducted eleven classroom observations. The data collected from the survey, focus group, and observations were used to learn more about the effectiveness of 16 specific instructional strategies and 12 instructional tools in an online learning environment. Participants perceived modeling and demonstrations, differentiated instruction, and authentic application to be the most engaging instructional strategies in an online learning environment, while modeling and demonstrations, scaffolding techniques, and differentiated instruction were identified as the most effective instructional strategies. The use of video, discussion forums, and virtual simulations and experiments were identified to be the most engaging instructional tools, while video, presentation software, and virtual simulations were identified as the most effective tools in an online learning environment. Finally, the findings from this study identified that professional development opportunities need to be directed specifically toward the implementation of instructional strategies and tools in an online learning environment.

The study's objective was to explore what characteristics students and teachers who participate in online learning perceived to be important for quality programming. Middle and high school students from a small urban school district who have taken at least one course in one of the district's online learning programs during the fall semester of the 2012-2013 school year, along with teachers who taught or supported those students, were invited to participate in a survey, open-ended questions, and focus groups/interviews. Qualitative data analysis from the survey resulted in identifying 51 characteristics students and teachers perceived as important, that were further grouped into six categories: course structure and resources; instructional design; program access and equity; student/teacher support; technology; and program evaluation. While the qualitative analysis supported the survey results, it revealed differences in the level of importance students and teachers placed on the characteristics. This study also identified areas of interest that warrant further exploration, with a larger population under a more controlled environment.
