This book was released on 2007 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: The book contains six sections. The first section covers general articles; then there is a section concentrating on novel systems and applications. This is followed by one that deals with a range of applications of polymers, surfactants and liquid crystals. This is followed by a section on advances in fundamental understanding. Then there is one on biological systems, and finally there is a section on micelle and vesicle systems, with particular emphasis on dynamic aspects. The contributors, including Physicists, Chemists, Biologists and Chemical Engineers, variously chose to write review-type articles, summaries of their own recent work in the field and its relevance in the general concept of self-assembly, specific short papers related to their particular presentation, or their own thoughts concerning the future development of their particular interest area. All these aspects are addressed in the book. The book covers research at the forefront of the subject, and it is expected to be a very useful addition to the literature in this important field.

Book excerpt: Systems Self-Assembly is the only book to showcase state-of-the-art self-assembly systems that arise from the computational, biological, chemical, physical and engineering disciplines. Written by world experts in each area, it provides a coherent, integrated view of both book practice examples and new trends with a clearly presented computational flavor. The unifying thread throughout the text is the computational nature of self-assembling systems. This book consists of 13 chapters dealing with a variety of topics such as the patterns of self-organised nanoparticle assemblies; biomimetic design of dynamic self-assembling systems; computing by self-assembly involving DNA molecules, polyominoes, and cells; evolutionary design of a model of self-assembling chemical structures; self-assembly as an engineering concept across size scales; and probabilistic analysis of self-assembled molecular networks. Other chapters focus on the programming language of dynamic self-assembly; self-assembled computer architectures; simulation of self-assembly processes using abstract reduction systems; computer aided search for optimal self-assembly systems; theoretical aspects of programmable self-assembly; emergent cooperativity in large-scale patterns; and automated self-assembling programming. Systems Self-Assembly is an ideal reference for scientists, researchers and post-graduate students; practitioners in industry, engineering and science; and managers, decision-makers and policy makers. The only book to showcases state-of-the-art self-assembly systems that arise from the computational, biological, chemical, physical and engineering disciplines Coherent, integrated view of both book practice examples and new trends with a clearly presented computational flavor Written by world experts in each area

Book excerpt: Metallofoldamers are oligomers that fold into three-dimensional structures in a controlled manner upon coordination with metal ions. Molecules in this class have shown an impressive ability to form single-handed helical structures and other three-dimensional architectures. Several metallofoldamers have been applied as sensors due to their selective folding when binding to a specific metal ion, while others show promise for applications as responsive materials on the basis of their ability to fold and unfold upon changes in the oxidation state of the coordinated metal ion, and as novel catalysts. Metallofoldamers: From Helicates to Biomimetic Architectures describes the variety of interactions between oligomers and metal species, with a focus on non-natural synthetic molecules. Topics covered include: the major classes of foldamers and their folding driving force metalloproteins and metalloenzymes helicates: self-assembly, structure and applications abiotic metallo-DNA metallo-PNA and iDNA metallopeptides interactions of biomimetic oligomers with metal ions applications of metallofoldamers

Book excerpt: Supramolecular chemistry deals with the organisation of molecules into defined assemblies using non-covalent interactions, including weaker and reversible interactions such as hydrogen bonds, and metal-ligand interactions. The aspect of stereochemistry within such chemical architectures, and in particular chirality, is of special interest as it impacts on considerations of molecular recognition, the development of functional materials, the vexed question of homochirality, nanoscale effects of interactions at interfaces, biocatalysis and enzymatic catalysis, and applications in organic synthesis. Chirality in Supramolecular Assemblies addresses many of these aspects, presenting a broad overview of this important and rapidly developing interdisciplinary field. Topics covered include: Origins of molecular and topological chirality Homochirogenesis Chirality in crystallinity Host-guest behavior Chiral influences in functional materials Chirality in network solids and coordination solids Aspects of chirality at interfaces Chirality in organic assemblies Chirality related to biocatalysis and enzymes in organic synthesis. This book is a valuable reference for researchers in the molecular sciences, materials science and biological science working with chiral supramolecular systems. It provides summaries and special insights by acknowledged international experts in the various fields.
