Book Synopsis Stability of Stochastic Elastic and Viscoelastic Systems by : V. D. Potapov
Download or read book Stability of Stochastic Elastic and Viscoelastic Systems written by V. D. Potapov and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1999-07-06 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stability of Stochastic Elastic and Viscoelastic Systems V. D. Potapov Moscow State University of Railway Communication, Russia Numerous structures assembled by civil and mechanical engineers are driven by external forces randomly changing in time and space. These forces include, for example, seismic and wind loads, transport loads and acoustic pressures. The parameters of these forces cannot be precisely measured, but they may have critical effects on fundamental structural characteristics, and hence have significant design implications. Materials used in construction also have an effect on structural behaviour. This book proposes a new approach for the analysis of the stability of different stochastic systems using both analytic (including asymptotic) and numerical methods. For example, constitutive equations used for the description of viscoelastic materials, which can be employed to take account of internal friction in an elastic material are examined, offering new opportunities for analysing the behaviour of real structures. Problems addressed include: * stability of columns and rods subjected to longitudinal random stationary forces * stability of plates in a gas flow subjected to in-plane loads, which are assumed as random stationary processes * stability of cylindrical shells and panels under the action of longitudinal random stationary loads * behaviour of flexible rods, plates and cylindrical panels, subjected to random stationary force and loads, under finite deflections Furthermore, this text develops methods for estimating critical loads, resulting in an accessible and unified account of reliability theory and techniques as applied to engineering structures. All postgraduate students and practitioners of mechanical engineering (applied mechanics), civil engineering (structural mechanics), applied mathematics, and designers of mechanical and civil structures will find this not only a valuable, but an extremely useful book.

Book Synopsis Stability in Viscoelasticity by : A.D. Drozdov
Download or read book Stability in Viscoelasticity written by A.D. Drozdov and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 623 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of stability problems for viscoelastic solids and elements of structures, with which this book is concerned, has been the focus of attention in the past three decades. This has been due to the wide inculcation of viscoelastic materials, especially polymers and plastics, in industry. Up-to-date studies in viscoelasticity are published partially in purely mathematical journals, partially in merely applied ones, and as a consequence, they remain unknown to many interested specialists. Stability in Viscoelasticity fills the gap between engineers and mathematicians and converges theoretical and applied directions of investigations. All chapters contain extensive bibliographies of both purely mathematical and engineering works on stability problems. The bibliography includes a number of works in Russian which are practically inaccessible to the Western reader.

Book Synopsis Handbook On Mechanics Of Inelastic Solids (In 2 Volumes) by : David W A Rees

This book was released on 2023-03-14 with total page 1202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook covers a number of the more recent developments regarding the mechanics of deforming solids. In recent years, much progress has been reported in the wide-ranging mechanical behaviour of solids under stress. Here the term stress in a solid arises from a number of external actions including direct tension, compression, pressure, bending, shear and torsion. Many of the topics covered are yet to find their way into the standard texts, which are often restricted to isotropic elasticity and plasticity. In this two-volume work, what might previously have been regarded as disparate, 'specialist' topics have been placed within a wider mechanics arena to emphasise their common, underlying principles. That arena is taken generally as one of inelasticity for dealing with the essential mechanics of these phenomena. Therein, this text brings together theory, experimental data, key references, examples and exercises, particularly those that relate to the important advances in the subject, both old and new. The presentation of material featured in this way anticipates that in their turn these additional topics will be recognised as essential material for study among engineers, physicists and applied mathematicians at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Book Synopsis IUTAM Symposium on Advances in Nonlinear Stochastic Mechanics by : A. Naess

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The IUTAM Symposium on Advances in Nonlinear Stochastic Mechanics, held in Trondheim July 3-7, 1995, was the eighth of a series of IUTAM sponsored symposia which focus on the application of stochastic methods in mechanics. The previous meetings took place in Coventry, UK (1972), Sout'hampton, UK (1976), FrankfurtjOder, Germany (1982), Stockholm, Sweden (1984), Innsbruckjlgls, Austria (1987), Turin, Italy (1991) and San Antonio, Texas (1993). The symposium provided an extraordinary opportunity for scholars to meet and discuss recent advances in stochastic mechanics. The participants represented a wide range of expertise, from pure theoreticians to people primarily oriented toward applications. A significant achievement of the symposium was the very extensive discussions taking place over the whole range from highly theoretical questions to practical engineering applications. Several presentations also clearly demonstrated the substantial progress that has been achieved in recent years in terms of developing and implement ing stochastic analysis techniques for mechanical engineering systems. This aspect was further underpinned by specially invited extended lectures on computational stochastic mechanics, engineering applications of stochastic mechanics, and nonlinear active control. The symposium also reflected the very active and high-quality research taking place in the field of stochastic stability. Ten presentations were given on this topic ofa total of47 papers. A main conclusion that can be drawn from the proceedings of this symposium is that stochastic mechanics as a subject has reached great depth and width in both methodology and applicability.

Book Synopsis Non-Classical Problems in the Theory of Elastic Stability by : Isaac Elishakoff
Download or read book Non-Classical Problems in the Theory of Elastic Stability written by Isaac Elishakoff and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-01-29 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a structure is put under an increasing compressive load, it becomes unstable and buckling occurs. Buckling is a particularly significant concern in designing shell structures such as aircraft, automobiles, ships, or bridges. This book discusses stability analysis and buckling problems and offers practical tools for dealing with uncertainties that exist in real systems. The techniques are based on two complementary theories which are developed in the text. First, the probabilistic theory of stability is presented, with particular emphasis on reliability. Both theoretical and computational issues are discussed. Secondly, the authors present the alternative to probability based on the notion of 'anti-optimization', a theory that is valid when the necessary information for probabilistic analysis is absent, that is, when only scant data are available. Design engineers, researchers, and graduate students in aerospace, mechanical, marine, and civil engineering who are concerned with issues of structural integrity will find this book a useful reference source.
