Book excerpt: This work has made extensive use of data taken by instruments funded by NASA contracts NAS 5-10364 (ATS-5) and NAS 5-21055 (ATS-6). Much use has been made of software also developed under the same contracts. The present contract was negotiated as a result of the realization that the UCSD plasma instruments onboard the ATS spacecraft could be used to specify an environmental model which would be of use to the Air Force in developing design specifications for spacecraft to prevent faulty operation due to environmentally induced electrostatic charging. In addition, reorganization and study of the existing data would also be of use in developing models which could be of use in predicting times when hazards to spacecraft from charging might be great. Within the next year, SCATHA will make the first observations from a vehicle specifically designed to study charging at geosynchronous orbit. We expect that refinements to the data presented here will result from that program, and that new models will result.

Book excerpt: The particle measurements by the P78-2 SCATHA satellite at near geosynchronous altitudes have been analyzed to obtain average electron and proton fluxes in the energy range 87 eV to 288 keV. The variation of the fluxes about the average values is also reported and the average fluxes are compared to those measured during an intense spacecraft charging event on September 22, 1982. These calculations provide a representation of the plasma environment, which can be used to quantify the surface charging of spacecraft materials in geosynchronous orbit.

Book excerpt: Data from UCSD plasma instruments on the ATS 5 and 6 satellites has been studied to specify the geosynchronous plasma environment as it affects electrostatic charging of spacecraft. The emphasis of the initial study has been primarily to service the needs of the design engineer; while simultaneously establishing the context in which a more general model could be developed. The report includes an environmental specification plus a review of geosynchronous plasma and wave phenomena. (Author).

This book was released on 1979 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data on the geosynchronous plasma environment derived from the UCSD plasma detectors on the ATS-5 and ATS-6 satellites have been carefully compiled into a pictorial atlas. The atlas consists of 12 days of data from 1969 (ATS-5), 38 days from 1970 (ATS-5), 37 days from 1974 (ATS-6), and 8 days from 1976 (ATS-6). The data are 10-min averages of the first four moments of the plasma distribution function for the electrons and ions. The data are presented in the form of spectrograms and line plots along with detailed ephemeris and geophysical information. Two computer tapes are available, the formats of which are given in an appendix. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the role of the environment in generating spacecraft potential variations at geosynchronous orbit is well documented, variations in the ambient environment itself have not been well-defined. Similarly, no studies of the environment have attempted an analytic formulation of the various parameters needed to model the spacecraft charging phenomenon. This paper describes the parameters needed to formulate such a model and outlines a systematic procedure for constructing a simple analytic model that includes the effects of local time and geomagnetic activity. Observational data from the ATS- 5 satellite are analyzed using this procedure to give a preliminary analytic description of the geosynchronous environment in the form of a FORTRAN program.

This book was released on 1978 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A preliminary statistical analysis of the ATS-5 and ATS-6 geosynchronous plasma data has been carried out. Variations in the electron and ion currents and temperatures, as represented by the single Maxwellian component temperatures T(AVG) and T(RMS), are evaluated with respect to local time and geomagnetic activity. The potential on the satellites is similarly evaluated. Results indicate that the geosynchronous plasma cannot be adequately represented by a simple Maxwellian distribution and that, at the very least, a two component Maxwellian is necessary. The electron current and eclipse potential were found to vary strongly with K sub p while the temperatures only varied weakely. Local time variations in temperature and current were observed but these were outweighted by a significant local time variation in satellite potential which peaked near midnight. An explanation of these results is proposed in terms of a simple model of the time evolution of the plasma following an injection. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive guide to the modern body of spacecraft charging knowledge—from first principles for the beginner to intermediate and advanced concepts The only book to blend the theoretical and practical aspects of spacecraft charging, Guide to Mitigating Spacecraft Charging Effects defines the environment that not only creates the aurora, but which also can have significant effects on spacecraft, such as disruption of science measurements and solar arrays from electrostatic discharge (ESD). It describes in detail the physics of the interaction phenomenon as well as how to construct spacecraft to enhance their survivability in the harsh environment of space. Combining the authors' extensive experience in spacecraft charging—and in their provision of design support to NASA, JPL, the commercial satellite market, and numerous other projects—this incredible book offers both a robust physics background and practical advice for neophytes in the field and experienced plasma physicists and spacecraft engineers. In addition to containing numerous equations, graphs, tables, references, and illustrations, Guide to Mitigating Spacecraft Charging Effects covers: Solar cell technology, especially higher voltage arrays, and the new design approaches that are appropriate for them Information about the space plasma environment New analytic computer codes to analyze spacecraft charging Spacecraft anomalies and failures which emphasized designs that are of greater importance than others

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ring Current Investigations offers a comprehensive description of ring current dynamics in the Earth’s magnetosphere as part of the coupled magnetosphere-ionosphere system. In order to help researchers develop a deeper understanding of the fundamental physics of geomagnetic storms, it includes a detailed description of energetic charged particles injection, trapping, and loss. It reviews historical and recent advances in observations, measurements, theory and simulations of the inner magnetosphere and its coupling to the ionosphere and other surrounding plasma populations. In addition, it compares the physics of ring currents at other strongly magnetized planets in the solar system, specifically Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, with the ring current system at Earth. Providing a description of the most important space weather effects driven by inner magnetospheric energetic particles during geomagnetic storms and present capabilities for their nowcast and forecast, Ring Current Investigations is an important reference for researchers in geophysics and space science, especially related to plasma physics, the ionosphere and magnetosphere, solar-terrestrial relations, and spacecraft anomalies. Includes an appendix with links to downloadable video clips, illustrating features of ring current and geomagnetic storm dynamics Provides overview of existing state-of-the-art numerical models and links for open-source code downloads Offers guidance on how to develop numerical models within the context of the present-day understanding

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Space weather is one of the most significant natural hazards to human life and health. Conditions of the sun and in the solar wind, magnetosphere, ionosphere, and thermosphere can influence the performance and reliability of space-borne and ground-based technological systems. If conditions in the space environment are adverse, they can cause disruption of satellite operations, communications, navigation, and electric power distribution grids, leading to a variety of socioeconomic losses. This book provides an overview of our current knowledge and theoretical understanding of space weather formation and covers all major topics of this phenomena, from the sun to the Earth’s ionosphere and thermosphere, thus providing a fully updated review of this rapidly advancing field. The book brings together an outstanding team of internationally recognised contributors to cover topics such as solar wind, the earth's magnetic field, radiation belts, the aurora, spacecraft charging, orbital drag and GPS.
